i find it funny that so many people rely so heavily on 1 cable, and that this cable is apparently easily damaged with a shovel and not easily distinguished from copper scrap.

this is also a cool example of the butterfly effect,
cause: 1 old lady cuts single cable.
ultimate effect: 3 million people shout "derp!" in unison as they try to twitter that their internet is down.

EDIT: I'm not sure how many people here realize just what an insane amount of money it costs to lay fiber optic cable. just mammoth. the funny thing is that it's meant to pay for itself by not needing to be replaced, a theory somewhat impeded by copper scavengers with a shovel.

Q: What does the internet in the Soviet Union have in common with the internet in Canada?
A: They're both ruined by gold diggers!

HEY-O!
Hi-five!

Ahhh, anyway. This story gave me the chuckle I needed. Thanks Tom.

I don't know why, but I find this hilarious. It's just so out-of-place for an elderly women to cut the internet in so many places.

It just goes to show that 75 years of experience doesn't necessarily prevent one from being a n00b. Even when one has lived through one of the most extensive patches in recent political history.

This does show how messed up some parts of Eastern Europe can be. They have fibre optic broadband and yet 75 year-old women still have to go out and dig for copper in order to make a living. Still... Quite a funny story nonetheless.

I was thinking more on the lines of..

In Soviet Russia, You don't destroy the internet. The internet destroys you!

...but that applies to me as well, so nevermind.

Wow, thats awesome, i should start digging now!
Wait, they get fiber optics over there? i should move there, and get better gaming connections!
not necessarily, they might just get the internet there via fiber, and it's delivered to houses via normal cable. ^^ move to norway or sweeden if you want badass internet. : D

Wow, this is great. They can't even try to say it was protected. If a grandma can accidentally cut the internet that's really sad.

Kinda reminds me. I live in 1 mil city in Russia (big by russian standards). Last week there was a notice glued to the door of an apartment building I live in:
"Dear Residents! Please stop stealing thick gray wires that are on the roofs. Those are fiber optics and are not worth anything as scrap. Sincerely, XXXXXX Internet service provider."
I kid you not.

They probably forgot, that unlike power cables, Internet cables can not protect themselves. And how would they do it, anyway? Place armed guards every 100 meters? Reminder: Georgia is a piss poor country too.
