Next, the U.S. Congress will demand a study on how secure our communications systems are against the elderly.

"Sir! A 72-year-old man in Sheboygan tried to use an ATM and knocked out two of our satellites!"
Ha! That's very funny. And clever!

OT: One fiber optic cable connecting important and in some cases vital internet connections across three countries? Don't they have like a backup cable of some kind for this sort of situation?

Theres fibre optics everywhere. Its been the primary long-distance linkage method for the interwebs for dogs years now.

Come think of it, i wonder what happens to the sharks that sometimes damage cables under the Atlantic...
It's actually a regular occurrence (well, besides the shark bit that is). The companies in charge have entire fleets on standby to repair any damaged cables.

Funny when you think about it. Everything I've done on the Escapist today has been delivered to me in Aus digitally from the US via some fat optic cable sitting in the Atlantic.

...reminds me of a time in [epic announcer voice]the year 2000[/epic announcer voice] when I was working tech support for a nationwide cable internet ISP... Most of the East Coast was down and we were flooded with calls... and the official story we were to give customers in the affected area was: "Some guy in Texas with a backhoe cut through the fiber backbone for the entire east coast. Sorry for the inconvenience. It should be back up tomorrow."

...and we were Tier 2 tech support... Local cable companies' tech support had to get confused and send 'em up to us before we got any calls. So sad...

I wonder how long it'll take to get 'em back up over there...

They arrested her on suspicion of damaging property, but she was temporarily released for "old age."
This made me laugh really really hard.

You know you're old when the police feel bad for arresting you.
hehehe, man this is entertaining. The bad of it is I'm not sure who I feel most sorry for :p The lady or the 3.2 million.

It'd be funny if that old lady was secretly a US spy sent to ruin Russia's internet.

Secret agent granny, secret agent granny...

Clearly they need to further reenforce there cables. Its odd to think that a backbone like that could even be cut at all. Usually those things are quiet thick.

All it takes to rob a few million people of internet access is an elderly woman digging slightly too deep? ..That seems unsafe.

No no no no! There are some things you just let go. She's 75 and the crime was so small: Kill the internet for a little while. Damaged a heavily protected wire. Really. ' -'

Still no diamond for her though....
Look at the cable, now back at me, now the cable. Unfortunately, the cable is cut and three countries no longer have the internet. Now look down, and look up. You're being harassed by the police, but they let you off for 'old age' when they really mean that you weren't being malicious at all. Look away, look back, and look down in that hole you dug once more with the broken fiber-optics cable.

The cable is now DIAMONDS!
