The ending to futuramas "Jurassic Bark" saddest thing I have ever seen.
This. I still, to this day, can't watch that ending without welling up.

OT: I was a bit underwelmed by the ending of Assassins Creed 2. I know its leading on to a sequel but I just don't really like Desmond that much and that whole ending seemed a bit rushed and almost arbitary.

When I watched Beauty and the Beast as a little kid, my babysitter decided to inform me that the beast probably would not live very long due to Gaston's stab wound. The ending has depressed me ever since.

What fucking type of babysitter was that?

I watched this old samurai movie "Harakiri" the other night, it was REALLY good but damn it had some brutal scenes and a really depressing ending. An early scene where a samurai has to kill himself with a bamboo sword may be one of the most grueling things i've ever watched.

oh god re2 made me feel slightly sad but the saddest ending ive ever come across if from a book im not sure who wrote it but in the end the main character works so hard to find his parents and finds out they gave him for cash and had no problem keeping him away(this wouldnt have bothered me so much if i hadnt know someone who had something like this happen to them)

Battlestar Galactica- because after it ended there weren't any more. Also certain people die, a lot of things get resolved but in a very melancholy way. It's quite a moving ending, although I feel that the whole involvement of the cylon god in the ending is slightly heavy handed and effectively used to hand wave a lot of the implausibly soft sci-fi.

Definitely the end of Half Life 2 Episode 2. It made me almost cry. A video game, legit. Almost made me cry, if I remember correctly. Depressing stuff, but very well done.
Speak for yourself. It made me want to throw something at the computer. As I recall, I bought the Orange Box pack, not knowing anything about the (still) mythical "Episode 3". My first reaction was:

"THIS is how the game ends? The aliens win and Dumbledore dies? WHAT THE FAAAAARK??!!!"

SUCH a colossal letdown. I have nothing against a downer ending (the original Half Life's ending was genius, and one could hardly refer to that as "happy"), but this was just flat-out stupid.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. "I'm sorry, Professor, but I'm not a gentleman yet!!!"

Oh wow, let me see:
Shadow of the Colossus: Christ, I can relate to the main character...not with a dead girlfriend or Giant Killing, but yeah.
Final Fantasy X: All the work to just...end.
Gurren Lagann: Yeah, pretty self explanitory...plus Kamina...
Ace Combat Zero: Gotta feel bad for PJ, Pixy, and even Cipher
MGS3: Just that feeling of betrayal and everything you had to do, and you get decorated for it, and yet no-one else will understand.
Peace Walker: Final Boss ending of the 'first' ending was really sad, inspirational, but sad.
MGS4: Just that hopelessness for Snake after everything he did, although I'm still confused as to why Otacon couldn't have just gone through the hallway himself

I find it amazing how that 30 minute cartoon could make care more about a character then full length 2 hour tear jerk movies.

I felt the ending to Professor Layton and the Unwound Future was sad. It is also the only ending to anything that made me tear up.

The ending to "The Mist" (film, not story). It was the most stupidly depressing ending to a film that I have ever seen.
Just a matter of time before someone said this.

I agree

In tv, it was "Jurassic Bark" (after I saw that, I couldn't look at my own dog for like a week without getting all teary-eyes, man I'm glad he's still hangin in there).

In film, it was the end of "Schindler's List", when Schindler breaks down and cries because he wasn't able to save more people from the death camps.

Yesterday I finished watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and I am now depressed for two reasons.
1. the ending
<spoiler=seriously do not click if you don't want MASSIVE SPOILERS>So, everyone defeats the Villain in a final battle that involves throwing around entire galaxies like frisbees. then just when the Hero marries his true love she ceases to exist (it's even worse that the afterlife is hinted at slightly in the series but since she was basically a hologram she's just gone forever). hero passes all of his responsibilities to another character and wanders alone for the rest of his life. At the end he finds a child attempting to get food and helps him out, the kid says how awesome he is and the hero flat-out says "no, I guess I'm nobody anymore" as he watches his friends continue their battles without him.
2.The series was so good that now I don't think anything else will live up to it. So now I'm sulking and trying to find something else to watch.

so what endings (be they games, movies, shows, or books) left you depressed and sulking?

Note:Elfen Lied also had this effect on me.
I couldn't be depressed over Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, it was too awesome to make me sad.

Elfen Lied, however, is the only thing that brought me to the brink of crying. It wasn't the anime though, but the manga. The anime follows the manga very closely up to the last two episodes of the series. Then manga kept going on for at least another 13 episodes worth of anime. And let me tell you this: THE ENDING IS THE DEFINITION OF TRAGIC.
I watched the anime first, made me bawl my eyes out, then read the manga..and just couldnt talk for a whole day. However artful they may have wanted it to be, that ending was just too fucking dark for me v.v..<3 Lucy D:

Many ASPECTS of the ending of The Shield:(apostrophes have been removed because they fuck up the spoiler tabs for some reason, not bad grammar)

Shane ends up poisoning his wife and kid so they die in their sleep, and he's in the middle of writing his suicide note when the cops show up. He shoots himself before they can stop him, so he doesn't even get to finish writing it. Vick sells Ronnie out and gets immunity for all their crimes, sending Ronnie to prison for everything the group has ever done. Meanwhile, Vick gets landed with a boring desk job. For him, that's pretty much the worst think they could have done. The last shot? Vick pulls a gun out his desk, gets up, and leaves. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE'S GOING TO DO. Side note: When Shane killed Lem, I almost CRIED. Oh, and for those who don't know: Vick, Shane, Ronnie and Lem are the four main characters of the show, and when the show starts, they are all best friends.
