Yesterday I finished watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and I am now depressed for two reasons.
1. the ending
<spoiler=seriously do not click if you don't want MASSIVE SPOILERS>So, everyone defeats the Villain in a final battle that involves throwing around entire galaxies like frisbees. then just when the Hero marries his true love she ceases to exist (it's even worse that the afterlife is hinted at slightly in the series but since she was basically a hologram she's just gone forever). hero passes all of his responsibilities to another character and wanders alone for the rest of his life. At the end he finds a child attempting to get food and helps him out, the kid says how awesome he is and the hero flat-out says "no, I guess I'm nobody anymore" as he watches his friends continue their battles without him.
2.The series was so good that now I don't think anything else will live up to it. So now I'm sulking and trying to find something else to watch.

so what endings (be they games, movies, shows, or books) left you depressed and sulking?

Note:Elfen Lied also had this effect on me.

Definitely the end of Half Life 2 Episode 2. It made me almost cry. A video game, legit. Almost made me cry, if I remember correctly. Depressing stuff, but very well done.

Hey look! It's another topic that makes me reply with:

"Batman Arkham Asylum".

Seriously though, great game, terrible finale and ending.

Almost Clannad After Story, but they made everything happy in the end.

So I'll go with Bokurano.
All of them die. By the end of the series, every single 14 year old child in the group has died to save Earth. Every single one of them.

The ending to School Days kinda bummed me out
Not so much Makoto's death more Sekai's death.Felt like an episode of When they Cry

Also P3 and P4's ending were both very bittersweet, though P4's was less drastic.

I'm going to have to agree with Gurren Lagann. Reminds me of this(SPOILERS and only makes sense if you've seen the series):

Other than that, I was admittedly very saddened by the end of FFX. FFX-2 ruined that, but then again, it was FFX-2.

I'd say Requiem For a Dream, as in the end there really is no happy ending. All of their pursuits of happiness fail horribly.

The Visitor (2008)
We watched it at the church camp I worked at this summer. It's a movie about the state of America's current system of handling illegal immigrants from the Middle East.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!?!? Get on the plane with her! Take the Terraq's girlfriend with you!! You can all live happily ever after in Syria!!!! GET ON THE PLANE!!

I couldn't be depressed over Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, it was too awesome to make me sad.

Elfen Lied, however, is the only thing that brought me to the brink of crying. It wasn't the anime though, but the manga. The anime follows the manga very closely up to the last two episodes of the series. Then manga kept going on for at least another 13 episodes worth of anime. And let me tell you this: THE ENDING IS THE DEFINITION OF TRAGIC.

Grave of the Fireflies.

The whole movie is depressing.
Christ, I know exactly what you mean. Try watching that with your East Asian Teacher who is half-japanese, who's mother had to go through that stuff. He was trying not to cry the whole time and since he was a philosophy teacher as well, he was analyzing his defense mechanisms. Great movie though.

yes! WIN!. also
Death Note
Near is killed by Light. only to have L, who is now a shinigami, use his death note and murder Light in an extremely painful way (bursts into flames)
and the first fullmetal alchemist series
it just goes the same as the manga/brotherhood and Shou Tucker as will as Envy are killed.

The ending to futuramas "Jurassic Bark" saddest thing I have ever seen.
in fact, the writers realized this and completely ret-coned the whole thing in Bender's Big Score.

For some reason I always get a little choked up (not crying, but a little thing in the throat) at the ending of Terminator 2.

"Two-Headed Boy, Pt. II". The last song on Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea."

It's phenomenally sad for a variety of reasons... first and foremost, it was the last song they ever recorded. You can hear him stand up and walk off at the very end. So heartbreaking.

Second. The whole album is about religion, sex, death, siamese twins, and Anne Frank, and this song primarily seems to focus on the last topic. For the most part, anyways... It's all very confusing and heartbreaking.

Also, the rest of the album is just as distressing. It's an overwhelming experience.

It's the weirdest album I've ever cried over, and it's the saddest song ever written for some incomprehensible reason. That's the saddest ending to anything ever.
