I was on Texts from Last Night one time when I came a cross a conversation where one of the people mentioned getting his girlfriend a box set of Nickelback albums. All the comments were different versions of "Wow you must really hate her."
I don't really have anything to say; All the pop and generic rock stuff is the same to me

Yeah, I had the same notion as the OP. Nickleback just started to be hated out of the blue. From what I understand, people think a lot of Nickleback's songs are about the exact same thing. Love or sex or money.[footnote]As you can probably tell, I don't listen to Nickleback, so I'm probably a little, if not way off track here.[/footnote]
However, a lot of music written in English seems to be this way recently, especially pop.

I don't hate Nickelback or Linkin Park, it just so happens I don't like their music anymore. I preferred Nickelback in the very early days, i.e. their album The State, when they were basically grunge, and I preferred Linken Park back when they had an industrial tone to them. As they've progressed, their music changed and I stopped listening.

Nickelback is one of the many groups that i don't want to hear. Whenever i see a post on the internet bashing them i think
"Oh my, a conversation on an internet forum on the subject of a musical group i dislike. It looks like all of the posters are voicing their displeasure about the band. Perhaps voicing my own displeasure will ensure a little bit of merrymaking and lead the post to display high resolution pictures of fruit"

So yeah. Nickelback. It's not that i hate you specifically, it's just that i dislike you as much as most other pop and the internet gives me more chances to write about how much i don't like you.

I like a few of their songs here and there, however once you hear one song....you kinda hear most of them. Also people have been hating on Nickelback for like a DECADE if not more.

As for Linkin park, I really liked them when they first started out. But they have gone in many different directions since then in terms of style. Some of their new stuff I like, some i dont.

Nicklelback are the very definition of generic rock music.

Generic lyrics, generic sound, there's just nothing genuine about the music either, on the one hand they sing about fucking shit up, then on the other, they're saying we all need to stand together to make the world a better place.

I hate the term 'sell out', but they're right up there with Linkin Park.
"Sell Out"? Linkin Park didn't sell out. If anything they did a Radiohead and voluntarily sacrificed hugeness to do the music they want. Respected 'em more ever since A Thousand Suns (beautiful Floydesque album, btw).

OT: Nickelback are way overhated IMO. Far from the worst band around right now - just a sort of average one. I'm fine with them really, their songs are catchy an' all. Also, Rockstar has a tad more smarts to its name than people give it credit for.
So Linkin Park didn't make a track exclusively for the release of Medal of Honour?

Wait, they did ¬_¬
does that mean avenged sevenfold are also sellouts?
Avenged Sevenfold are sellouts for other reasons, but that's a different discussion.

OT: Nickelback isn't terrible, they're just mediocre. That's all.

So did I miss something? Did the group fly to Botswana and start torching children with flame-throwers?
Children, babies and the elderly, actually.

Or did they not choose the "fag life" and don't say "***** nigga fuck monay titties ass" in every one of their songs like alot of rappers?
Yes, stereotypical rap is definitely what Escapist users enjoy. Senseless violence, misogyny and drugs? YES PLEASE.

Its mostly cause they're the most vanilla sounding music for their genre, like every genre does. hell, the reason i dont like slipknot (outside of not really being a big fan of the genre itself aside from a few bands) is that they're the most generic "metal" you'll ever hear and yet people who like it treat them like they're gods among fucking men and more than what tehy are. but thats their opinion, and they're perfectly welcome to it. Its actually also the reaosn I dont care for metallica. well, that, and they stole pretty much all their most well known songs.

And tehy actually have a problem mumford and sons has in that most if not all of their songs sound pretty much the same. But I dont mind NB, they're alright and I like some of their songs. But then again, im one of those people that is content with listening to music as solely background music, and tahts a niche NB fills pretty well (and tat isnt meant to be an insult either).

though i htink its funny my captcha was ear candy.

EDIT:

I always considered LP sell outs after they did all three main songs for the transformers series. hell, even twilight mixed their music selection up for who did the main song.

Well obviously. Don't get started on this tired debate. Rap is music no matter how much you don't like it.

Linkin Park started to attract hate because they became super popular. They're still good. Maybe not quite as good as they initially were, or maybe just different. Hard to be sure.
In either case, they're still very good.
People just hate popular stuff.

Nickleback started attracting hate because they started to suck.
They suck SO bad, that they were nearly voted out of being in the half-time show at an inconsequential football game. They decided to let them play, and lucky for them the home team sucked EVEN WORSE that day, so people forgot about Nickleback entirely.

So I was walking around the bush listening to Nickelback when I remembered, that lately, hating on Nickelback seems to be a trend. Now I get why people started getting all uppity about Justin Bieber when he became famous (because he's got more money and girls than you will ever have in your life) but Nickelback has been around for ages. I thought it might be because they suddenly became popular, which is why alot of people began a phase of hating Linken Park, but I haven't heard of them standing out lately.

So did I miss something? Did the group fly to Botswana and start torching children with flame-throwers?

Or did they not choose the "fag life" and don't say "***** nigga fuck monay titties ass" in every one of their songs like alot of rappers?

So please enlighten me Escapists, why does everyone hate Nickelback all of a sudden?

EDIT: Ok the bit about rap was a bit uncalled for, it's just what my friends and their friends tend to listen to then when I ask em why they bash every other genre and artist out there they just cry "gay" or something like that.
I dont think i like you..."because he's got more money and girls then you will ever have in your life". So did nirvana but we didnt hate them... i just cant take in your whole post.

Could have sworn I read somewhere that it was made for the game, must have just been the music video.

Regardless, it makes them slightly less of a sellout :D
what if the song is good? is that still a bad thing?

is Trent Reznor a sellout because he's done music for games and movies? (ture its soundtrack stuff..but still)

If your friends still care enough about music to use the word gay as an insult, well, all I can say is that very little that happens while you live with your parents actually matters.

I hit college and aside from a little pop insult, no one ever really bothered to care about music anymore. Not loudly, anyway.

I like Nickelback a little bit. Figured You Out is probably my favorite song by them.

They're not the most unique band in the world, but their songs are catchy as hell.

Same with Linkin Park, but at least they were somewhat "original" when their debut came out.
I feel a bit insulted on behalf of linkin park to be compared with nickelback

sure they are polarsing..but at least they had/have a very different sound and went all kinds of places..

nickle back has always remained medicore crap

Nickleback is the Nicolas Cage of music. That's why people hate them.
That's unfair. To nickelback, no less. Cage can't act, period. At least Nickelback know how to hit notes on their instruments.
Nickleback is bad. So is Cage. But National Treasure wasn't a bad movie. I stand by my statement.
What films have you actually seen Cage in? Because he is a very good actor when he's in films that don't suck. And when he's in films that do suck he knows how to make them fun to watch.

THIS is what started the Nickelback hate:
Yeah, that video is actually completely fake. The version of Someday [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VMFdpdDYYA] used is pitch-shifted up one semitone to put it in the same key as How You Remind Me, and the version of How You Remind Me [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cQh1ccqu8M] used has had sections cut out to make it fit better with Someday. By that logic, Blink-182 were essentially re-using the same song when they wrote The Blowjob Song [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5gSq5QIxmE], All The Small Things [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ht5RZpzPqw] and M+Ms [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZs88WWGDoo].
Yes, I am well aware that it is slightly off, its not exactly hidden very well....

The point is that when I first heard Someday it was playing on VH1 ( at one point that channel showed music videos on occasion) I was in the process of walking to the fridge ( was gonna make a PB&J) I heard the opening and started singing How you remind me, but you know what? Same band new song different lyrics..... The songs do not line up perfectly we all know that, but they are damned close..... At least when good bands want to rip themselves off they don't hide it...
