I understand that point, but I thought evolution was merely random changes over time that later carry on or die out. So I guess we would continue to evolve but since it probably wouldn't make us more likely to die then we'd reach a point of a lot of diversity.
Most likely this. We're too spread out and there are simply too many of us for us to properly evolve as a species, there's no threat around to wipe out those that don't adapt. I reckon that we'll see different sects of humanity, maybe like when neandarthal and homo sapiens cohabitated.

Exactly.

Evolution occurs when it is necessary.
Adaptation it's called right? Unless we go to a new environment (say a city-dweller goes to Africa for the rest of his life) his body would have to adapt to living in that place.

We're not going to change much. There's no need for survival of the fittest anymore, it's more come a case of those who can... how to put this nicely... "maek babby" the most becoming the new template for humanity.

Chilling thought, no?

Of course, that's just Darwinian evolution, in the purest sense of the word, humans are going to evolve themselves. Genetic modification and cybernetic enhancement will make people better. If I had to pick the big example though, I'd guess people in the future are going to be less... "consolidated"... a single mind might control several bodies, perhaps even at the same time.

Flight is possible with heavy bodies. Its just more difficult. Bees for instance fly despite having large heavy bodies and small wings. Its all down to the method of flight.
I am aware. Example: anything man-made that flies. I more meant the logistics about a human flying make it vary impractical. The heaviest bird with flight is 29 pounds (average) with a wingspan of 7.5 feet (average). From other larger birds I can find that ratio holds decently well. I would need a wingspan of about 40 feet to fly(not accounting for weight of the wings or weight of the increase of muscle mass to flap said wings). I am actually pretty light as far as humans go. Also, you would need a lot of energy to flap the wings. I imagine we would need to eat like a hummingbird(often). It is just too impractical to happen.

Hmmm, I'm going to go with more resiliance to toxins, like the industrial crap in the air. Chances are, corporations won't go clean before the (insert very large number here) years it takes us to get tougher lungs and the like.

evolution is dead. Look at all those poor people kept alive by foreign aid. These days, anybody has an equal chance at sucess.

We would need a cataclysm or something.

wow, some people really dont understand evolution, we dont evolve in regular cyles, its a passive thing, and we are still (and forever will be until extinction) evolving.

actually Im reminded of something I read once not really evolution but it may be relevant.

humans were once bigger/taller (no I dont mean back when there was alot more oxygen) about 6'2 for men and 5'9 for women on average (men average at 5'9 now)(and we used to be shorter like 5'5 for men).

the reason we shrank? we settled down and started farming which cut the veriety of our diet down as weve developed and spread and veried our diet again we have gradually neen getting taller.

we arent at our full height but were are going to get there.

(people might wanna confirm this though I could be wrong)

Let's admit it. Idiots get more sex. It's why Jersey Shore is so popular. But it can't go on, or in millions of yeas all that will be left of mankind will be douche bags with fake tan on.
it will come close to that, but then the people who make food and fake tan will no longer be able to take up the strain of the extra workload, so the system will collapse and they will all be forces to eat feotusses directly from snookies womb, causing them to mutate into cannibals screaming "muff cabbage" and raping fat children, they will wonder the earth and attempt to eat the remaining norms until suicide bombed by the taliban

im not sure after that

So Earth has been around for a pretty long time, yea? Scientists and other good folk have traced the evolution of man, among other things, back to several millenia ago.

Whether primates were our ancestors or not, or we came from the sea originally, humankind has evolved through the times and will (if we don't destroy our planet) continue to do so. But we're not perfect, and it has been a while since we last evolved.

So I pose this question, to you, my fellow Escapists;

What do you think will be the next step in the human evolution, and when will it happen?
[sub]Take a guess or give us some scientific mumbo-jumbo! Throw it out here.[/sub]

Edit: Can't be bothered to be scientific? Then just post what you think would be cool! That'll work too.

As far as it goes, the course of human evolution is already pretty obvious if your paying attention. People become smarter, faster, and stronger with each generation. We constantly see athletic records being broken for this reason, as well as the simple fact that we suffer a lot of social problems where children are concerned because they have been progressing intellectually (becoming smarter, faster) than our society wants to acknowlege or deal with, especially seeing as it still doesn't come with the emotional maturity and experience that one would expect with that level of intelligence. This is why we have so many "shocking" cases of child criminals, with kids doing things that people think they should not be capable of. The increased capabilities and intellect combined with childlike attitudes and an as-of-yet undeveloped moral compass means that on some levels we're living an omni-present "evil child" novel or movie. Of course such sociology (there has been a bit written on it) has little place here.

The only kind of flashy POSITIVE evolutionary change that we might see would be the development of psychic powers. Of course that's pushing it, but it's remotely possible due to the fact that some scientists have allegedly found that we are verrrrry slowly using more and more of our brains. Depending on what those by and large "inert" portions of the brain actually do, if anything, we might see something impressive coming from that direction in following generations.

Being a cynic however, I also sort of suspect we might see negative evolutionary changes, or simply put evolutionary defects. The reason being that humanity is overpopulating, and despite being self aware, we have so far been unwilling to do what is nessicary to keep ourselves in check.

Some of you might remember hearing about how all living things with genders have the DNA in them for both genders. In cases of extreme crisis for a species, animals have literally changed gender in an attempt to rebuild the population and keep the species alive. This was a key point in the "Jurassic Park" concept even if somewhat downplayed in the movie, the whole "nature finds a way" bit was in the movies, as well as a point about how shocking it was to find a pregnant dinosaur since there should not have been any females at all to keep the population stable (ie only what they wanted to clone).

The point here being that such things can apparently work in reverse as well, and it's quite possible that we'll see people born with genetic defects (or developing them) intended to reduce the population rapidly. Perhaps even seeing an overall effect similar to "The Happening" (minus the killer plants) or whatever.

Some fringe scientists I remember reading some stuff about have theorized that one of the reasons why we might have so many sickos, sociopaths, and nilhists nowadays is because such people are being produced with the intention of them killing other people to reduce the population. We've done a pretty good job at keeping war down to the point where the number of humans steadily increases, and if one argues aggression is intended as a survival instinct to prevent overpopulation it's possible we're wired for this to happen. People tend to think that because we are self aware, and can control a lot of our base instincts, that somehow humans are magical. In the end we still react on an instinctive level and simply justify what our system is telling us within our minds, it's part of how we work. People are by and large organic computers running off of electrical impulses and chemicals. This is why things like hypnosis and deprogramming/brainwashing work, not to mention why we can adjust behavior (typically to make the mentally ill more normal) with medication. It's amazing what "mind altering chemicals" can do to a person on a lot of levels because of the huge influance chemicals play in who we are. At any rate, it's unknown how nature and species-wide events happen (some people seem to suspect pheremones form a sort of meta-computer for a species in addition to affecting things like sexual attraction), but they can.

See, in a personal sense we'd think that a biological change that killed people off in massive numbers would be bad. In the big picture though when you look at survival, resource depletion, and pretty much breeding ourselves out of existance something like this could be "good" objectively. Animals like lemmings pretty much committ suicide by instinct for the sake of the species as a whole.

The point here being that with the problems I see, human evolution might not be anything we'd consider good on a personal level. Our own inabillity to control our breeding causing us to develop some kind of self-destruct mechanism or whatever.

I'd think eventually we'd evolve to grew new teeth, like sharks to match our longer life spans. Side note the way we live longer lifespans would cripple us, I mean current situations mean you have to live on your nest egg from age 55-65 til the day you die, which can be 40+years. I mean fuck people in the old days didn't have these problems, the drank they smoked they ate bacon, and they fucked off at around 60. 40 years from now there will be like billions of elderly folks with no income and nothing to do.

Our technological advancements will surpass evolution within a few thousand years.

You want wings? But evolution wont give you them? How about you genetical engineer some wings for yourself?

There's little selection on humans nowadays, with natural healthcare and all that. In fact, one of my teachers even pointed out that thanks to healthcare, people with 'bad genes' (genetic diseases and the like) survive and carry the genes to a new generation, instead of dying out. I think that without some sort of catastrophe that will select fit and unfit from the human population, we won't see big differences in millenia to come.

But humans do evolve, however slowly (as all evolution is slow). Remember the Black Plague that struck Medieval Europe? Turns out the descendants of those people have a slightly higher resistance against HIV.

Doing first year of Biomedical sciences, just had a Genetic exam before winter recess :p

I Think Humanity will branch off into three different Groups:

Group 1: Exypnos Anthropos or "Smart Man", will be the group of Humans who have Bigger Brains and thus continue to have Modern Human Socieities. They will be a bit taller, but also a bit weaker, but their technology will be 50 times more improved then ours.

Group 2: Ischyri Anthropos or "Strong Man", will be the group of Humans who have Bigger Muscles and will have a deformed form of Human Culture (It'll probably be a restart of Human Societies, like Roman and Assyrian Cultures). They will be a bit taller, but stupider, and will probably also be more persuadable. They could be more violent, but perhaps they'd make great workers and soldiers, but this could lead to the Smart Man using the Strong Man as their Paid Armies.

Group 3: Allaxe O Anthropos or "Changed Man", will be a group of both Smart and Strong Men who where Genetically Engineered (Literally, not what Genetically Engineering really means) by either their own want or through payment promises. They will differ from Man to Man: Some might have wings, some might have kitten parts, others might be just gelatinous blob monsters. Some might be accepted into Human Societies, but most will probably live on the fringes of both cultures, and perhaps they would develop their own.

Also Cyborgs, but they'll probably fit into the Smart Man Category.

(PS, I was Using Google Translator to create the Greek Names for the New Humans, so the Greek is probably incorrect)
Humans are called Homo Sapiens, and it would be best if descendants from that species carry the same genus name, with your names that should be Homo exypnos, Homo ischyri , etc. :p But I could be wrong. Still having to get used to the biological nomenclature.

In today's society human evolution is over, as we have ways to sidestep it. In fact, people with non-successful "traits" tend to procreate more (or say, people with very 'good' genes in africa die by starvation nonetheless) by my observations. So, that would mean the gene-pool is actually more or less de-evolving.

Society needs to be a lot more nature like, and not give second chances, for evolution to start working again. That said, it's not a society I would like.

If anything, people will generally become a lot darker, and traits such as blue eyes and 'white' skin will probably become much rarer as the dominant genes are bound to outbreed the recessive.
