Funny how nobody accuses Baldur's Gate 2 of being an RTS, even though the control scheme is an RTS one...
I'm guessing that the reason is that BG2 is turn based and thus isn't real time.

If anyone has responded, sorry for the repetition.
You never played BG2, did you?
Yes, I did. Bought it on release date back in the day. I'm still claiming that it's turn based, per AD&D. You think it's wrong?
I'm not talking about the controls as such. They can indeed be likened to RTS, but the core of the game is turn based.

Stop complaining about what the game is?
Just play it and enjoy it.
I'm pretty sure the game would be awesome if it was a board game.

...Then why do people keep accusing FO3 of being an FPS? Combat in an FPS isn't determined by your stats, skills and such. Combat in FO3 IS determined by your stats, skills, and as such excludes it from the FPS club...
Pretty much that.

And Mass Effect is a fucking 3rd person....my god
FO3 is RPG simple as that
Agreed; guns are useless without V.A.T.S.

It's not pure turn based. Temple of Elemental Evil was turn based. Baldur's Gate is real time, although the mechanics play out mostly along the lines of AD&D. And the control scheme is very much an RTS one for the most part.

Also, way to miss the point in my original post. It's not about BG being realtime or turnbased, it's about genres. If it would please you more, go reread my post but replace real-time with turn-based in refference to BG2...

It's the Reese Peanut Buttercup of video games.

"You got FPS in my RPG"

"No! You got RPG in my FPS."

"MMMMMMM tasty"

Look, I don't disagree with your first post. I never meant that you were wrong, just that the reason I never thought of BG2 in connection with RTS is that the mechanics of combat is turn based, even if they are also real time.
This is not actually an argument that leads anywhere. I don't actually disagree with your, I just wanted to give a possible answer to your question.
Never mind.

It's an FPS/RPG, which is what any hybrid is called >_> An Action/RTS, an Action/Adventure, a Survival/Horror... etc.

Also, for those who don't understand -- RPG is a Role Playing Game, meaning you play the role of a set character through a storyline involving him and his adventures/misadventures/whathaveyou. That doesn't mean it has to be played a specific way >_> The only reason Fallout 3 is an FPS/RPG and not just an RPG is because it can be played from the first person perspective. That's it @_@

Oblivion was also an FPS/RPG, although it was more FPM [First Person Melee] than FPS...

I agree with your first thought. It's kinda autistic to have to stick labels and genre's on everything, dont you think?

Its a really poor FPS and a pretty damn good RPG. The fact that VATs is infinitely more useful than aiming in its shoddy FPS engine confirms this. When I had come to terms with this I was placated.

I still wish it had left the shooting to a solid FPS element and then RPG'd the rest of the game. After all when it comes to choosing between blasting and blathering, I'd rather blast. Give the shooting for free and I might consider talking.
There are some useful mods to reduce the auto aim to nearly none at all. this makes shooting outside of vats more viable and fun.

It is an RPG with an FPS tacked onto the side of it, like some shooter games have stats or customization tacked on.

Fallout also is, if you are a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, pure liqui-joy.
