Yay, I guess. Had no problem with GFWL actually, but Steam is a-okay.

Though if this Steamworks craze will continue I think every damn PC-game that hits the market will have steamworks in the near future and that worries me.

I think that Games for Windows on the box means just that...a game for a Windows OS. Nothing to do with the abortion that is GFWL.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
its like that it doesnt need gfwl anymore altho kinda sucks for other online retailers
I hope dow 2 does this at some point, I mean it already needs steam but getting rid of gfwl would really kick ass

Indeed it does. If it uses GfWL, it'll say "Live" on the box. If it just says Games for Windows, it doesn't.

Still though. I'm against forcing consumers to use a platform they have no interest in using, whether or not its Steam or GFWL.
Whilst I do see this argument, PC gamers without Steam are likely becoming a minority. Half-Life 2, Portal, TF2, MW2, L4D... The list goes on.

It's one of the main reasons I bought a console this generation: PC gaming continues to be made more overcomplicated and annoying. As if they weren't bad enough already.
At least steam is a little better than gfwl.

What's so complicated about Steam?

1) Put in disc
2) Install game (and Steam if it's not already installed)
2a)Register a Steam account
3) Enter serial
4) Take out disc and don't use it again unless you want to install it again
5) Play game

Complicated.

A quick question from a PC gamer noob, why does Windows live offer such bad support?
Microsoft really bungled the implementation of pretty much everything in Games for Windows Live. Observe Shamus Young struggling to get some Fallout 3 DLC. [http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=8059] Plus, if you start a game on an online profile, you can't get at the save file when you're offline.

yep, the games for windows banner is for marketing, nothing more. if it has the little live thing on the right side under the banner and says games for windows live then it uses live, but plenty of games have had to have steam activation but still used the gfw banner (metro 2033 and just cause 2 if my memory serves me correctly).

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

The only reason I never bought Fallout 3 was the horror stories surrounding GFWL.

Now I can play next-gen Fallout AND support Steam. Fantastic.

Oh no I have to buy that game on my favourite digital distribution system which I use to buy nearly all my games anyway.
The tragedy.

I love steam :)

Jeez you couldn't make a more unfriendly system if I tried. Why would anyone use it?

Well, I still don't quite like being forced to use a system and have to activate it online, its still a lot better than Games for Windows Live.

After having to deal with it cripple the game's performance, not to mention it being awful in terms of distributing the DLC, I'll take anything but GFWL.

Still though. I'm against forcing consumers to use a platform they have no interest in using, whether or not its Steam or GFWL.

Glad to see it won't impact modding in a negative way.
Steam's really rather nice. I'd say give it a shot before you go ZOMG RAEG.

Valve have been huge proponents of modding, HL and HL2 were built with massive support for it, and Counter-Strike even began as a mod for the original Half-Life, which Valve (wisely) purchased and made into a for-sale product. I'm not as sure about the original Team Fortress, but suffice it to say Team Fortress 2 has been a juggernaut, and the original was a free-to-play mod as well.

But then, Valve also throw their SDKs at people willingly.

wtf? do they ever dare to give us a good reason for this vile treachery?

the fact that they are playing a cover story for a annoying DRM system for those wish not to have steam but they also treating the game like a multilayer!
.....
urgh, never mind.

Why do I get that feeling the Steam threw a little money towards Obsidian/Bethesda for this "feature"?
