If that guarantees that the damn thing will have updates more often and will crash less, I'm all for it.
But it probably doesn't.
Still, achievements support - good enough.
Crash less? A bethesta game? Seriously.
I guess it's a good thing Bethesda aren't developing it then.
No but Obsidian is.

A company that has put out buggy games in the past (Kotor 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Alpha Protocol) is developing on Bethesda's Engine, which is known for being buggy.

Sounds like a perfect storm.
It's cool, we just have to wait 2 years for the community to work out all the bugs.
Indeed.

*sigh* when did it become the communities job to basically fix the bugs that the developers are supposedly being paid to fix. I mean sure, these games are big and there are bound to be bugs, but the amount of bugs is just ridiculous.

Thank god for the mod thing.

Fallout 3 mods = Oblivion mods in a degree of awesomeness.
Bethesda has always supported the mod community.

What's that? I'm reading a news post, but I'm hearing music.

oh, right, youtube is open in another tab.

But yeah, this is great news. Steam > Gfail.
GFWL sucks, and the faster it dies, the better. It's already suffering severe necrosis, and there's nothing that can be done but give little [whoever is the head of GFWL] a shotgun and re-enact that scene with old yeller.

I'd rather not be forced to use Steam, but I don't mind it as much as GFWL.

Required phone home online activation for single player game? No thank you. Steam is still DRM no matter how you slice it.

You realize the whole point of this exercise is to destroy the ability of consumers to resell/lend/rent games right?

And yet... people are actually cheering about having DRM in their game.
Yes, Steam is surely the lesser evil among the other choices, but still its another game turning to no-steam no-play deal and i dont like that fact. I dont like game publishers deciding for me what software, no matter how good, i am forced to use, especially when i buy hard copy.

I will still buy it of course, but am not happy.

It's one of the main reasons I bought a console this generation: PC gaming continues to be made more overcomplicated and annoying. As if they weren't bad enough already.
What's so complicated about Steam?

1) Put in disc
2) Install game (and Steam if it's not already installed)
2a)Register a Steam account
3) Enter serial
4) Take out disc and don't use it again unless you want to install it again
5) Play game

Complicated.
My problem is that they always make me download the game. These games are #^@&!ng huge and they take forever to download(if they actually download all the way), especially on launch day. What I'm saying is that they always make it way more complicated than it has to be.
If you have to disc then no download is required (except for any Day 1 patches or something), just install from disc and your away.

I don't really mind DRM as long as it doesn't get in the way of me playing, and so far Steam hasn't actually done that.
And at least they offer some incentive.

Finally a publisher making a sensible decision to avoid piracy. Steam is definitely the way to go. I don't think any of us wanted have an Assassin's Creed 2 style DRM on Fallout: New Vegas.

Then maybe I only get games that have day 1 patches because I always have to end up downloading it. But not just a patch, I always have to download the entire game.

This sounds completely reasonable apporoach. No, "your internet connection dies, your single player dies," garbage, easier (and CHEAPER FOR THEM) updating, possiblity for bieng cheaper all around (no disk, you can cut out some of the up front cost to make the same profit off each purchase), and also gives Valve some more money to spend on modeling more hats for TF2.

The game's on the disc, there isn't a download unless you bought it off the steam store, or if you're downloading a patch.

And once you have it on your system you can make as many backups as you want (they will however still be bound to your account).

Oh well, different opinions I think Steam is the best of the worst, and I won't try to change your opinion about it, as it is yours alone =P

I hope dow 2 does this at some point, I mean it already needs steam but getting rid of gfwl would really kick ass
GFWL is the only thing keeping me from buying that game. I want it so much!

If I had a choice between GfWL and Steamworks, I'll pick Steamworks any day of the week.
Yeah... That's like picking between having your genitals gnawed off by a dog or a gentle slap on the wrist. I don't think anyone's arguing in favor of GFWL here.

That said, steamworks is, so far, the least intrusive form of DRM out there. Between Steam or ANY of the other "genital gnawing" alternatives, it's not even a question which is preferred.

Not what I meant exactly, Bethesta makes good games, they just need to finish them or fix issues. They never do.

From what I gather obsidian isn't much better with bugs.

Thats really odd, i've never had to download the whole thing. You tried verifying game cache?
