I'm a huge huge David Lynch fan.
If you've got a tolerance for movies that don't make immediate sense, go pick up a copy of
Eraserhead
Blue Velvet
Mullholland Dr.
Inland Empire
i can understand why some people would respect lynch's work, but i find it to be unnecessarily unsettling. i did however found eraserhead to be the most impressive one of his list of films.
i recently watched la chinoise (the chinese) by jean-luc godard. That's a pretty good film for anyone interested in marxist thought or french new wave cinema in general.
another noteworthy film i watched recently is a film titled haxan by benjamin christensen. at first glance, the film seems to deal with the history of witchcraft, but towards the end the director does a pretty good job at relating this concept to violence committed upon women and the mentally ill during the medieval witch hunts in europe, and the progression of human rights since then.
lastly, one director worth checking out is ingmar bergman. some (if not all) of his most notable work usually employs the portrayal of human relationships and interactions as a manner to delve into the conceptions of modern morality. some of his most popular works include the seventh seal, sawdust and tinsel, and wild strawberries. my personal favorite is scenes from a marriage.
