I guess I'm one of the nerds filling in the blanks...

I actually have three movies I'd like to contribute, although I'm not sure about their obscurity. Most people I told about them didn't seem to know them though:

Hogfather
The Colour Of Magic (might be known as "The Color Of Magic" in the Western Colonies)
Going Postal

Three really well-made book-based movies. Admittedly with some weaknesses, but hey, you try to fit a week of reading into three hours of acting.

Buckaroo Banzai is one of my all time favorite films, great pick!

For myself I'll pick New Frontier.

I think that <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.231661>Snow Angels still counts as an "Obscure" movie. Or have I mentioned it too much for that?

If it doesn't count, I pick <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.264833>Just Peck instead. Both are really moving films. :)
Bang Bang Your Dead best movie about bullying ever as it has an actual message to give also its just an amazing movie.

If you where wondering why I was quoting you Marter I was wondering if you could review Bang Bang Your Dead at some point?

I think hipsters are attention whores and weeaboos can't appreciate their own culture. What do I know, though, I'm an internet troll.

I don't know if Let The Right One In got much praise, but I enjoyed it.
Nope, you got a point there.

Don't judge me OP. I'm not a hipster.

OT: Probably Equilibrium. It's not that obscure of a movie, but for how fucking awesome that movie was I'll count it.

It failed because the trailers made it look like a straight to DVD release.

Another vote for Brick.

Tommy from Third Rock From The Sun plays the most implacably badass noir protagonist ever in a stylish hard-boiled detective story set in a goddamn high school. His assistant vice principal/exasperated by-the-book police chief figure is Richard "John-motherfuckin'-Shaft" Roundree. What's not to love?

Taking Chance, without a doubt this movie causes many heart strings that cause even grown men to cry. Based on a true story of a U.S. Marine killed in Iraq, later sent home with a Colonel escorting the young PFC Phelps. Best part of the movie? It avoids politics, it avoids religion, it avoids every controversial topic and even the point of being over in Iraq. It just shows the family's heartache when their loved one comes back in a coffin, and the amount of detail that the military puts into their funerals out of respect for the fallen. No agenda, just showing the story of a young man returning home to finally rest in peace. Few movies have caused me to cry, Taking Chance is one of them.

Although, sadly even the more famous Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon movies are considered "obscure" outside of geek circles. People don't know what they're missing, man.

Personally, I don't have a favorite (unless you count Yojimbo as obscure) but two movies I saw recently that I really liked were Cave of Forgotten Dreams (3-D Werner Herzog documentary about cave paintings) and Pontypool (genuinely original zombie movie.)
Film4 shows a lot of Miyazaki movies here in the UK and that's a free tv channel so I don't think they are that obscure here. Plus when Jonathon Ross used to prevent Film (whatever the year was) he would almost always review Ghibli movies and he has a very good taste in movies.

I'm going to go for the Princess Bride. I am the only person in my generation who I know has seen it.
That isn't really obscure just older.

OP: Not sure if it counts but Moon was really good. The only other not popular movie I've seen (besides a few anime "movies") was The Other Woman with Natalie Portman. and I'm not even sure if that was popular or not, I just only heard about it through Red Box and I saw on IMDB afterwards that it was by some random like French independent company. Interesting movie though

Well it'll be pretty obvious on here, but for me Spirited Away, most people I know have never even heard of it
Isn't that the live-action of Higurashi?
I'm told it's fucking horrible :|

Ontopic, sadly The Fifth Element, because the only person I know of that's heard of it was my English teacher from last year. I don't even know how that's possible.

Considering how many people I know that actually know the movie, I could go with scott Pilgrim... But in this case I have an Ace up my sleeve....Love Exposure. A 3 hour long, japanese movie about basicly everything. Teen Drama, Angst, religius cults, panty shots, martial arts... it's all in there.

The Machinist starring Cristian Bale was an amazing movie. One of his early roles and probably one of his best since he went all out with his character, such as losing massive amounts of weight to sell the malnourished look in the film. I dont know if this is obscure enough though
Not sure I would refer to The Machinist as an early role, it was the movie before he played Batman. Pretty good movie though.

OT: I'm going to say Company Of Wolves which a lot of people now don't seem to have heard of.

I'm a huge huge David Lynch fan.

If you've got a tolerance for movies that don't make immediate sense, go pick up a copy of

Eraserhead

Blue Velvet

Mullholland Dr.

Inland Empire

For some reason, Rabid Grannies scared the absolute piss out of me. It's the most obscure thing I can think of that's not either critically acclaimed or a wannabe snuff film.

1 - No it's the most popular studio ghibli. (with good reason it's great)
2 - 5th element was a blockbuster!
Exactly, and I still know of ONE person that knows it ._.
