What is your favourite ship?

It can be any kind, real or fictional. It can also be a boat. I'll even allow a pail bucket you've somehow managed to conquer the seven seas with.

It can be your favourite for any reason. If you wish, you can have both a favourite fictional ship and a real ship.

Mine is the most obvious of them all; The RMS Titanic. I just find her lines so graceful. I think the screen on A-Deck also gives her a sleeker look than her sister ship Olympic without being too cluttered like her younger sister ship Britannic (though she was cluttered with good reason).

A fictional ship?

The Buy N' Large ship from WALL-E. Not so much for the consumerist angle, but it probably has some fun areas to explore. It was large, open and colourful (probably a result of corporate conditioning). I recall liking it because most of the fictional spaceships I've seen are small, cramped and have mostly a practical purpose with comfort as an afterthought.

The Space Shuttle Endeavor is probably my favorite ship ever to move. It is our real space ship, inspiring people for decades to work towards getting up a little higher. Why Endeavor in particular? Because my professor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Robinson flew four times in it.

Personally I'm pretty into Korra/Bolin... oh. Like, actual boats? ... *sigh*... ok.

I gotta say, budget hangups aside, the USS Gerald R. Ford is looking BAD. ASS. It launches planes... WITH SUPER-CONDUCTING ELECTROMAGNETISM!!!

As for fictional ships...

YOU EXIST BECAUSE WE ALLOW IT. AND YOU WILL END BECAUSE WE DEMAND IT.

Soul-shatteringly terrible ending aside, Mass Effect's reapers are some seriously bad ass ships. Daunting is size and strength, and also crazy mind control shit going on... and there's THOUSANDS of them. Pretty terrifying. But gawd, that ending... T_T

Vagyr Battlecruiser

It's the sexiest spaceship ever!

An imposing wedge shape that combines brutish heavy armor as well as small details like subsystems, with 3 gigantic railguns peaking out of it's nose, and a giant missile battery that runs along the top spine.

You take one look at it and you know that thing can take the hits and dish out the pain.

It kinda represents everything that's awesome about the Homeworld designs.

- It's the only thing Chuck Norris is afraid of.
- There were plans to have it in the first Star Wars movies, however, it would have wiped out the rebels in 2 seconds flat and made the death star look puny, so it was hidden from mortal eyes for a while longer, and the empire was dumbed down so the ewoks could win.
- While most inanimate objects don't go to heaven, God made an exception for the Vagyr Battlecruiser
- The real reason the Vaygr Battlecruiser hasn't been made in real life yet is that World War 3 would break out over who would get to fly it.

And if that doesn't count for some silly reason, my choice is the Enterprise. Seems like the nice way to travel.

...only the Hammerhead makes me want to jump into a dangerous system and fight swarms of Outcasts.

Self sufficient, heavily armed and turns tight. Nice cargo capacity too.

The Bellator class dreadnaught is the king. Palpatine's navy had style.

Give me the Yamato with air cover please. No surface ship on Earth could challenge her equally when she was afloat. Submarines might have even had difficulty coping with her sheer weight in armor.

The Bebop! Probably for the crew inside it than anything else. Nothing particularly special about it. It's got no weapons and it's wrecked as hell and constantly under repair. But I like the hominess of the ship, at least it seems like a cool place to live.

Oh, wait. Damn.

I seriously thought you meant- um... never mind.

Well then, I'll go with the Collector one from Mass Effect. It looks like a gross laser pen.

It would be the Grasshopper by SpaceX, it's like a normal spacecraft but also has the ability to land straight up.

This mofo.

I like to imagine it being akin to the Reapers of the FTL-verse, with bowels being evacuated every time it drops out of a jump.

It's a defensive beast in the early game, only needing a cloak to finish the job. The nose and mid-section are stupidly easy to vent in the instance of boarders or fire; although the tails are a little more awkward. Obviously its only downside is a lack of starting weapons and once you've got something there to break through Zoltan shields, you're laughing.

Favourite fighter:

SA-43 Hammerhead from Space: Above and Beyond

Favourite multi-crew sup-capital ship:

Sao Paolo class from Star Trek (USS Defiant)

Favourite capital ship:

Oslo class heavy escort.

Favourite real-world ship:

Norwegian stealth corvette, Skjold Class. The people who made this thing have hax. Does more than 60 knots, looks like driftwood on a radar, is incredibly sexy and has the firepower of a ship twice it's size. The designers have been consultants for the US ever since in helping them design a similar ship, and I think the results were done last week. Can't find a link now but I heard they finished making 6 ships in the US based on this.

Damnit, beaten to the joke I was going to make about the different kind of shipping by three different people no less.

I have always loved the Halo ships. I liked the strong contrast between the human ships and the Covenant, not only in design, but the names as well.

Oh, and Homura and Madoka.

The SS Great Britain, you sexy thing. The first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic, the largest ship of her time and the first ship to combine an iron hull with a screw propeller.

Not really seaworthy these days though.
As a Bristolian there's only one real answer here.

Whilst The Phantom Menace was pretty dire, I did always like the Naboo Fighters, they looked like someone took a WW2 fighter and shoved it into Star Wars.

Don't know about favorite ship, but I know my favorite ship CLASS:

A UNS battleplate is made primarily to defend inhabited planets against stellar impacts. After all, you never know when someone will fling a rock the size of Britain at you at 0.7 C. As a side effect this means it also has the gravity gun fire power to shatter fleets, or strip the crust off a planet. And of course one can't forget about the immense numbers of personnel, equipment and facilities each hauls along with it, making one of these a mobile city-sized fleet base. The Tunguska, depicted above, is roughly 8 kilometers on each side.

It's from the web comic Schlock Mercenary, in case you were wondering.

I like the Babylon 5 ships because of the real gravity physics - achieved by rotating sections of the ship.

Unless sci-fi tells us how artificial gravity would work or at least acknowledge that it is needed, I don't want it there. If it's some mystery alien tech, fine, but if Earth is going to discover it I at least want it acknowledged as something wonderful that allows us to walk around in space as if on Earth. I don't think Star Trek ever mentioned any ship technology that would achieve its gravity on their ships, yet they constantly bring up the warp coils, transductor relays and tractor beams.

See, everyone goes for the Yamato first, but they forget about the Musashi, which was basically the same ship, except flag officers so preferred Musashi, which was both more comfortable and a much smoother cruise.

OT: When I have more time, I'll put up a pic of an Eldar cruiser... sexy ships, they are... =.=

Real world-wise, I'd go for a WWII submarine... I'll need some time to think on which one, though... -_-
