As a Final Fantasy fan I'm sick of this garbage from Square-Enix. I bet they can do it but are not confident enough about the sales because of the taste of the modern gamer. Plus with Yoichi Wada's love of western games it's probably being pushed aside for more games that would appeal more to the average gamer. Also I think it could be done in a shorter time if they pull all their resourses onto the project, probably 5 years but they wouldn't be able to make any other games. I think the biggest problem they'll have is the fact that they would build it from the ground up instead of reskining Final Fantasy VII, that's what we want! Screw making Final Fantasy XIII with Final Fantasy VII's story, we want the same game with prettier graphics and it would take a shorter time to develop if it's just a reskin job.

Regardless I think if they're not going to make it they wouldn't keep talking about it. Seems as soon as we start to forget the last comment from them they issue a new one. To be honest I'd rather they hurry up with Kingdom Hearts 3 to finally finish that series off. Also I'd like Square-Enix to stop ruinning their games like Front Mission Evolved, if I wanted to play Armored Core I'd buy Armored Core I want Front Mission for tactical RPGs.

I think the whole "remake FF7" issue is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong... I absolutely love the game and I would very much like to see it revamped, I just think it's ridiculous because either the fans won't let the issue drop and yet neither will the developers. They keep giving people hints and teasers and keep bringing it up CONSTANTLY.

And I totally call bullshit on the 14 year development time. With enough money and manpower they could get it done within two years I am willing to bet.

Well yes, if you have only one random guy do all the artwork, programming, vocals and design, yes it'll take 40 years. This is why you use a development *team*

After everything past 9, this sort of makes sense. They would have to make it pretty AND good. Which they seem incapable of doing after seeing what the ps2 could do and crapping themselves

I reckon they're saying this to take some heat off the developers for now, then possibly release the bombshell in 5 years that it is in development. I remember when they said FFXIII might not be made, or at least a slim possibility. (At least I think it was 13)
13 shouldn't have been made (given what we got). But yeah this is obviously them just whining to get us to stop asking for it. They have all the set pieces in place and if the "development time" being as long as it would be is due to the games length.. they don't need to make if FF13 quality. Yes, FF13 was stunning, but if it takes them 4 years to make a 30 hour long hallway, cut down on the graphics and make something that's actually compelling to play.

There's an extremely high probability that he meant it as a figure of speech, not a mathematical analysis, considering what you wrote.

What? How does that even make sense? They have the script. They have the game design, they have the music, they have all the concept art... honestly, it'd take less than two years tops. What a load of shite.
yeah it makes no sense, the tech has caught up to the ps3's capabilities, they have the story/characters/graphics/everything already there, why would it take so long?

if there was a remake, cool, i'd def. get it, but if not, i guess it wont bug me really, im just curious as to why it would honestly take that long? they have EVERYTHING there, and i loved the materia system, so idk what they'd really need to change that would take that long.

they have all of the music
Actually, they don't. To remake FFVII, or any game, sure, you have source material, but you don't have the exact music to reuse; like, take Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen. They didn't use the same exact music from back in the day, that would have been ugly, using 8-bit music on a 16-bit remake. What did they do? Arrange it on modern hardware for the system. Flash back to modern day. FFVII had, well, some ugly-sounding music (to me, even by standards back then). Nowadays, we expect games to have an orchestral score, especially games like Final Fantasy. Subtract Nobuo Uematsu from the modern day possibility of an FFVII remake since he is at Mistwalker Studios now. Not only do we not have the inability to use the original music in its exact form, but we do not have the original composer to work with it. SE would need to get the right to arrange Uematsu's work. If they can't, then bam, we get an original soundtrack in the remake of FFVII.

Back on topic, hyperbole much? You can update level designs, yes, but still, it doesn't seem like it'd take more than, what, four years with current generation technology?

Why does everyone act like FF7 is such a big deal? If they remade it, it would be the same game. I'd much rather have them work on another The World Ends With You than a remake of yet another FF game.
HELL THE FUCK YES.

Seriously, Final Fantasy VII was... decent for it's time. Remaking it brings nothing new to gaming in general.
Yes, we need more compelling and inventive games, like Halo 3! Because that game was nothing like it's predecessor and brought an an entire new concept to gaming. I mean, space marines killing aliens!? OMG! Or what about Street Fighter 4. It's FIGHTING.. in the STREETS! That's never been done before. Or heck, even SE's most recent game, Nier. A 3rd person action game where you fight monsters with a variety of weapons and go on quests for townspeople. Never been done before! We can't go around remaking games people want when there's so much new and interesting stuff to be done.

I think they just don't want to. They seem to have gotten it in their head somehow that gamers are all about the good graphics. It's true, good graphics are nice and all, graphics rarely make the game.

It took 3-4 years for them to make XIII and that was mostly just the graphics and level design. They could probably remake VII in about as much time by simply upgrading the graphics just enough to barely be considered current gen. They don't have to go all out.

Sony managed to beef up the first 2 God of War games just fine.

Hell they don't need to completely remake the thing, just, well do what they did with God of War 1 and 2. Upgrade the graphics, add some trophies, and bam, you got millions upon millions of copies sold.

I really doubt that 40 year development time. I think he's just sick of people asking him about it.
I don't think it's quite that simple; the difference between GoW and it's "update" was only 4 years, barely one system generation. You're asking for a quick and dirty graphical update, but the game is almost 15 friggin' years old. It's going to take way more effort than just smoothing out some jaggies here and there.

That said, I'm entirely in favor of what you propose here. A new coat of paint and a few trophies, and they can gladly take my $$$.

Did he just openly admit that FFXIII was an incredibly shallow game? I mean, logically the only way his comment would make sense was if FFXIII had 10% of the content in FFVII. I didn't think it was THAT bad.
