Mine had these problems along with an E71 error. I got a free complimentary repair. So, question is do I get a new shiny xbox back in the mail or an old shitty one?

EDIT: Holy Christ a quadruple post? That's a new record.

Impressive quad post sir, and I believe the article says you get a new 250GB slim model. This means I'm kinda hoping my elite doesn't survive this update :D

What Firmware update?

Reading through it Im reading it as 'Makes your xbox unable to read retail discs'

So like, your saves will all still be fine to transfer to a new xbox? I sure hope so. I mean a short wait while they replace the machine isnt a huge deal if you can transfer your save data across. Unless they demand the old console back before they send out a new one. I dont like that idea at all.
I'd assume you can just take out the 360's hard drive and place it on a newer 360. Unless the newer models don't allow you to do that.

I'd better check to see if my 360 still works. I'd hate to not to be able to play any of my games. Especially with Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 coming soon.

It's like a congo line of milk spewing. And I really am clueless, the xbox guy didn't help all that much. But by what he said I will be receiving an old one, which he kind of insinuated would shit itself, at which point I will be sending it back for a new one. He even confirmed my email address saying, "You will be needing this".

This is a long complicated bureaucratic process.

Me, yelling at roommate: Hey, have you updated your Xbox yet?
RM: No, why?
Me: If you update it and it breaks, you could get a new one free.
RM: *momentary silence* Fuck yeah! Turn it on for me, be there in a second.

That is indeed a generous offer, hopefully my xbox will show this error, so I'll get to update to slim. I'm still rocking a 4-year old no HDMI version.

It is funny because I am not alone with the "Oh I hope my old xbox bricks!" ideology. My xbox is from 2007ish, so I would be happy to have it brick!

First the PSN hackers, now this... are people actively TRYING to make Nintendo look better by comparison?
Except Microsoft actually ends up looking GOOD due to their quick response and generosity. Just look at these comments, half of them WANT their Xbox to go belly up (I know I do).

*Blows dust off of XBox*
Wasn't expecting to get you out until Gears of War 3 was released, little guy!
Crap... How do you work this thing again? Shut up PS3! The PSN Store isn't up yet, so there aren't any free games to make me forgive you yet.
And besides... XBox is so lonely, and there's a possibility we could take it out behind the shed and shoot it and get a younger model in!
Quit rolling your eyes, Gamecube...

I'm gonna go off the beaten path and say I hope mine isn't affected. Not that I wouldn't mind a new 360, but I've had mine for 5 years now with only one repair and I'd like to keep it that way. And also I just fucking bought LA Noire, if my console goes belly-up I'm gonna dragon kick a baby

I didn't see an update or anything when I signed on, but I have a MW2 limited addition 360. That's pretty recent. So I'm in the clear even though I don't want to look at it after my experience with MW2 -_-

For those thinking they can get a free console out of this: Microsoft is not that stupid s-Yes... I admit I tried it too... and it didn't work :(

Hell mine had this problem 5 months ago, so yeah, already got me a shiny new slim console (which I paid for)

"Clarification time! The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of todays headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly.

The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues.

Hope that clears a few things up."

I still have my 360 Pro (a thank you) and it still runs perfectly. So if my 360 craps out on me, I will get a free Slim? That'd be great!!!

Amazing, another reason to hate modern consoles. I've had more fun and less frustration with my PS2, Genesis and SNES than I have with the newer consoles in the past 6 months.

Dam, you here first, but this is true as told by Major Nelson. Now I can play Overrun on Ref Dead Undead.
