Actually, sexual assault and/or harassment is very much a problem in New York [http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/19/sexual-harassment-is-no-1-quality-of-life-offense-on-subways-police-say/] subways.RT-Medic-with-shotgun said:despite what anita wants people to think, sexual assault on subways, buses, & trains is not epidemic in the USA

Gordon being a mute (either actually or due to creative licence) doesn't tell me anything of what kind of person he is. The point is you cannot critique a cipher type character as being sexist or not sexist, they are by definition neutral on all things. There is no way Gordon or Chell could be sexist, there is nothing about their characters anyway.Kahunaburger said:Gordon Freeman is a man of few wordsTreblaine said:Really? Describe Gordon Freeman's character without stating what he does or who he is?
(You're confusing a character with a character with a defined personality. Many of the most iconic characters in video games are ciphers, Gordon Freeman and Chell included.)
And if you want to convince me that your continued use of the term "segregation" is not appropriation, you're going to have to do a little better than this:
Japan is trying to create a safe space for women so they can ride the subway without getting sexually assaulted. It's analogous to a restroom or a locker room. It's not remotely analogous to America's Jim Crow South.Treblaine said:How is it practical to order people what carriages they can an cannot use in overcrowding? Are you saying it isn't a problem that Black people be forced to sit at the back of the bus in segregationist Deep South?

Are you from Japan? What difference do you think it would make if you were? I don't think it makes a damn bit of difference. I don't have to live in Iran to know it is wrong to execute people just for being homosexual.Kahunaburger said:Ahahahahaha what.
ITT: people not from Japan T.Ting about how Japan's preliminary steps towards a safer commute are unfair to the poor mens.
Those statistics measure the number of sexual assaults recorded by police. Don't confuse those for the actual incidence of rape, which is drastically underreported to varying degrees in most countries.Treblaine said:OK, that is a plausible explanation... but so it is also plausible that she approves of segregation IN GENERAL as a solution of a minority of criminal assault. Never the less, she still supported this as a solution. It is very hard to excuse.Trilligan said:In case you missed it, I did respond to the video a few posts ago, when it was liked by rbstewart, so I discussed the topic of subway cars there. To paraphrase myself, Sarkeesian is only endorsing that one specific subway car case, and then only implicitly, probably to prove her point. And while her point is knee-jerk and extreme, it is understandable, particularly given Japanese cultural fetishes (including subway rape) and kind of horrible treatment of women in general - as evidenced by the guy talked about in the OP.
I still think Apartheid is a really bad comparison. It's just so much more vast and more destructive than a safe-zone subway car ever could be.
As for the Bayonetta ad? I guess its placement was just a matter of unfortunate coincidence? I can't say I agree with her on that point, either.
Japan actually has one of the lowest rape per capita in the world, lower than Canada:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap_percap-crime-rapes-per-capita
Lower than strictly conservative countries like Morocco that ban all pornography and forbid women showing their body.
but but but you're just sexist!!! you want women to suffer!!! anita is a brave strong woman and you should agree with her on everything!!! every woman that uses public transportation gets raped it's a proven fact just ask any feminist!!!Treblaine said:Are you from Japan? So, let me just run this by you again.
Segregating black people in public transport, that's racist right, prejudicial treatment of an entire race.
Segregating, "middle eastern looking" people in public transport, that's also racist, and wrong. Even though a minority of people from middle east have committed serious crimes (suicide bombings) on public transport, the important thing is that it is fundamentally wrong to persecute an entire group for what a minority does.
Segregating men in public transport... is not sexist or not misandry... or if it is sexist it's acceptable sexism. Yeah, because something-something patriarchy, blah blah blah.
Most men are not abusive molesters. Just like most Muslims are not suicide bombers. Segregation such as this is fundamentally unjust.
Yes, they are reported rates FOR EACH COUNTRY! They work for purpose of comparison.cobra_ky said:Those statistics measure the number of sexual assaults recorded by police. Note how Egypt is on the very bottom of that list, even though it's been well-documented how serious the issue of sexual violence still is in that country.

Gee, I wonder why Japan doesn't take all this really good advice from random Westerners on the internet who have never set foot in their country. What could they possibly know about this issue that random Westerners don't? [small]Quite a bit. Seriously, you should look up some actual Japanese sources to better educate yourself on this subject, particularly on the reporting/enforcement end. That will help you understand why they've instituted this policy.[/small]Treblaine said:It is simple, if everyone who molests people on trains is consistently detected, reported, arrested and prosecuted the problem will quickly go away.

Pro tip: EVERYWHERE on public transport should be a safe place whether men or women are around.Kahunaburger said:Gee, I wonder why Japan doesn't take all this really good advice from random Westerners on the internet who have never set foot in their country. Yeah, segregation of groups is bad, sexism is as bad as racism, homophobia or islamophobia. Are you suggesting sexism is not a serious issue?Treblaine said:I don't have to live in Iran to know it is wrong to execute people just for being homosexual.Treblaine said:Segregating black people in public transportPfffftahahahahahaTreblaine said:Segregating, "middle eastern looking" people in public transport
That's right, folks: giving women safe spaces where they don't need to worry about being groped is the same thing as homophobia, racism, and islamophobia. You heard it here first on The Escapist.
