For the older gamers (10+ years of gaming), what is your GOTD (game of the decade)?

Portal was amazing and just as long as it should have been.

Fallout New Vegas took all the things I love about Fallout 3 and put it into a setting and plot that satisfied my nostalgia for the original two fallout games (hell, I played through it three times before any of the DLC was even released).

The Witcher was a personal favourite with a different approach to in-game combat (I know this annoyed a lot of people but I found it very fun) and great plot.

COD:4 - a good, coherent and involving single-player game and an excellent online multiplayer (it felt like two games for the price of one).

Zelda Windwaker - yes its controversial cel-shading actually means the graphics didn't age as badly as the original OOT. It basically improved on everything OOT and is, IMO, the best of the 3D Zeldas to date (by that I mean; if someone asked me to reccommend one to play that is the one I would choose).

Why the 10 years if I may ask? Out of sheer curiosity by the way.
Well, it wouldn't be a Game of the Decade otherwise, would it? :) And I felt the 'favorite game of all time' thing has been done to death. I wanted to add something to make it a bit more thought provoking and limited.

wait 10 years of gaming makes you old? 10 years of gaming doesnt even get you out of your teens.

anyway FFX hands down, nothing even compares
Well, I've been gaming for close to 30 years, but I wanted to give the younger set (with at least a bit of experience) a chance to chime in.
you should say 15 years, although most will ignore it anyway, this thread will be dominated by games released in the last few years, simple because most of this forum were only just getting over the whole bed wetting thing when the year 2000 hit us
Or maybe the quality of games have increased in recent years. I played OoT and Super Mario 64 on release but I wouldn't say they are the best games of all time due to nostalgia.

OT: I would pick between Portal 2 and Braid. I'll pick Braid, because of the new ways that existing time mechanics were used. I really liked the doppleganger world, as it felt quite trippy and it's rare when a game feels unique in a good way.

Morrowind. Without any hesitation. That game was released nine years ago and I still sink around six hours into it a week.

Honourable mentions go to Red Dead Redemption, CoD 4, GTA 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

I would say Crash Team Racing... But it's just out of this decade...
I'd agree with this too lol <<<<<--------

Maybe Half Life 2?

last decade I'd spent most of my gaming time on Counter Strike Source, Age of Mythology and Warcraft 3.

So in terms of overall greatness, probably HL2, Warcraft 3 and WoW (I have never even played WoW).

Edit: also Portal

That is indeed a tough question, but there are 4 games which have stood out to me. In order...

- Thief : Deadly Shadows
- Fallout 3
- World of Warcraft
- Metroid Prime

Having said that, there are great games which I haven't played which I would have liked to try out. Red Dead Redemption for the PC would be nice :)

That is not easy, but I'll give it a go.

1. Fallout: New Vegas
2. GTA: San Andreas
3. Red Dead Redemption
4. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
5. Final Fantasy IX
6. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Portal
8. World of Warcraft

Definitely got to be Halo 2, It's not my favourite of all time but it redefined everthing for me plus just playing split screen with my closest mates is one of my fondest memories.

Diablo 2 would be my crowning title. It isn't even my favorite game, but it is the game that I have spent the most time on. The story is good, it's fun both online and off, and because of the variety between the three difficulty settings makes it very replayable. Then there are all the mods that can make it even better.

Hmmm, tough call. Do I say Oblivion or Shadowrun? I'm gonna say Shadowrun - as an fps there's no other I've played with such depth and balance. Kinda sad my favourite game was made by a studio who collapsed after making it.

Age of Empires 2 might have stolen it but it was released 1999 / 2000 so just missed out.

Not Sure, really loved Half-Life 2, Shadow Of The Colossus was a great experience, Super Smash Brothers Melee was one of the most re-playable games that lasted me 7 years and Metroid Prime had possibly the best atmosphere to immerse me. I can't tell you which is my favourite to be honest.

Oh God, that's a tough one. Well, if I had to narrow it down to my personal game of the past decade. It would probably have to be 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. It all just came together for me and made one awesome complete package. First of all, it had the graphics, and the sound. The sound of 50 Cent, both in music and voice. The story absolutely blew me away. Like at the beginning when he's talking to that guy in the car, and I'm sitting there thinking that I was expecting this to be a mindless run and gun game, but here is a bone fide cutscene with 50 talking to a guy(s).

And then men with guns show up and steal his Golden Skull!!

And then you better believe all hell breaks loose! ;D

Overall I can't think of any other game this past ten years that even comes close to trumping Fiddy. Call of Juarez: The Cartel would come very close, but it didn't capture the raw nature of 50 Cent. Probably because he's actually from the streets and has been shot 9 times. I think that adds authenticity to proceedings and you really believe he'd fight through the Middle East, blowing people away to retrieve what is rightfully his. Cause hell, if you've been shot 9 times already, what harms a couple more going to do! XD

Yeah. As far as games being art is concerned, Blood in the Sand has to be one of the best examples (my opinion. I realise others may not feel the same) Along with Fiddy's other creative efforts, you get a very strong sense of his identity and who he is. I know music and film aren't really relevant here, so I'm sorry for going a bit off topic, but along with his albums and his movie, Get Rich or Die Tryin', it all comes together into a beautifully cohesive whole. I'd never seen the movie or listened to his music before playing the game, but obviously after seeing him in action, I was compelled to check them out.

And honestly, after doing so, and getting an idea of who the man is and what kind of life he's had... I actually teared up a little when I played Blood in the Sand again...

What can I say? I'm a sucker for a rich, engrossing back story, and he certainly has one. And Blood on the Sand for me, is the ultimate realisation of all that, and is easily my game of the decade. :)

Thinking about it, it's a shame they can't get Fiddy down to the Middle East, cause based on BOTS, he could really kick some major ass for Uncle Sam! :D

I probably trend a little older than some on the site, old enough at least for my gaming life to have started on a brand new asteroids console at the local fish and chip shop, and since then gaming has always been at least a small part of my life. I mention this to explain the thinking behind my choice. Over this time there have been some really memorable gaming experiences, that may not have been the best game ever, but gave some sense of not only playing a good game but also seeing something that was new.

-Kings Quest was the first game I played at home that wasn't an arcade port (try finding that bloody ring with CGA graphics, but easier than my friend with the hercules card)
-Pool of Radiance was the first real D&D port and had a first person view roaming in 4 directions through those 16x16 dungeons
-Ultima Underworld with free roaming camera
-Wolfenstein 3D introducing FPS
-Tomb Raider introducing fantastic atmosphere (I still remember the curiosity-holy s%^$-awsome reaction hearing the t-rex before I saw it)
-Myst putting story above gameplay and having actual puzzles
-Gran Turismo having a real start from the basics car racing rather than just fast cars

This is a shortened list believe it or not, and are not necessarily the first gamea of their type but the first ones I experienced.

While there have been some great games in the last 10 years (RDR, Mass Effect, GTA4, Fallout3, Oblivion all ones I've enjoyed). Only one has had the feeling of something new to me which is GTA3. It felt like something fantastic and new in games, so gets my vote for GOTD.

PROBABLY Star Wars Galaxies...

MMOs aside, it'd depend on what sort of game I wanted to play... 2142, Morrowind (beats Oblivion every time without mods, probably still beats it with mods), Rome:TW, honourable mention for Mount and Blade, probably a couple of other little gems in there too if I had my games hear to browse through...

Hard question, you have to take into account a lot of factors. But for me, it will be a tossup between Fallout 2 and Deus Ex but... if pressed I'll go for Deus Ex lol
