For those who dislike cosplay...

i just don't get it. Video game characters or anime characters have very rarely been designed to look like real-life humans. well, until recently where people have tried to make everyone look as realistic as possible.

But in anime, the characters are supposed to be japanese, but i don't think they ever particularly look japanese, nor do they look particularly English or American or anything else.

So i've personally never seen anyone who looks convincingly like a videogame/anime character, thats including this

neither of them look like Rikku from Final Fantasy X-2 in my opinion. they are both wearing clothes that look like her clothes, but neither of them possess the correct facial features nor body to look like a convincing rikku. i still think the Japanese girl looks very attractive in that clothing, and could even get away wearing it just for fashion purposes.

This is just the reason why i would never cosplay, because the main purpose of it is to dress up, look like and act like a particular videogame/anime character. I have not yet been convinced this is achievable, and i know there is no way i would ever look like any character, no matter how i dressed.

Obviously though, i'm now going to be told that "not everyone dresses up to be a convincing character, most people just do it for fun"... and to be honest, what can i argue against that? That bearded sailor-moon-girl guy was definatly not focusing on looking like that character, he was doing that because he thought it would make people laugh (or cringe). But i can't say everyone is like that... I think a lot of people are pretty serious about it; but then when they get mocked or see someone who they think looks better at being that character than they-themselves do, claim it was just for fun.

Or maybe its more underlying than that, maybe the dislike stems from my brother calling me "sad" (as in the geeky way) from ordering a gaming t-shirt, then weeks later he himself went out cosplaying as 3 different resident evi 4 characters, refusing to accept it as anything other than "cool" (and he meant in the 'popular' way, not the geeky awe way). I guess i've changed since then and tell people off for using the word "sad" as an insult, recalling an event when they themselves could have been percieved as "sadder"

Oh, and if you haven't understood my point or it got lost somewhere. I don't think Cosplayers look like the characters they are mimicking and thus see it as a little bit pointless. However, i'm not going to rage at people for that, because its their money and time and if they enjoyed themselves at the end of the day, then who am i to try say "it wasn't worth it".(rhetorical questions don't deserve question marks)

I don't mind it. Hell, I'm going to Colossalcon9 dressed as Link. So no hating on cosplaying from me.

"for what?" Because they have fun. They put the effort in, they go to the con, they're the center of attention. Same as anything in life.

I dont hate cosplay but it does make me cringe sometimes. My ex-gf took me to a cosplay convention in London. I had a good time laughing at everyone but the people who do it well are impressive. The rest...well...parents-attempt-to-make-a-halloween-costume sort of fail really xD

Was mocking me really necessary? I was just asking, curious as to whether they have other reasons besides fun.
It also builds skills, such as construction or sewing.

It's the same problem I have with fan fiction, poorly directed creativity. You invest all of your energy and creativity in poorly portraying someone else's idea. Why not make something new and creative and innovative?

Occasionally I see someone come up with an original costume or character and play that. That's cool and interesting...but otherwise I've already seen it and it's just kind of boring or ironic. Make something new or quit b!tching that no one gives you credit for your time and effort.

Besides, most of those cartoon/ gaming costumes are a bit unreasonable to even TRY to bring to life, and look stupid and impractical regardless of the effort put in.

Mocking you is always necessary. Everyone should be mocked daily, it keeps people from thinking that they can question others on a higher level than they should question themselves.

Philosophical bullshit aside, why should it need to be for anything more than fun? I could argue that I play games to increase my reaction time, boost my hand eye cc-ordination and help my problem solving. I could argue that, but it's a side-effect of me having fun whilst being a lazy **** and being able to sit at a PC for hours on end. Likewise, it might improve your people skills (the more you have strangers coming up to you and starting conversations, the more you'll be able to strike up conversations with stranger), it could improve your sewing skills, or you could just be doing it so that people who you've nevere spoken to before will go "Oh wow, that's awesome!"

I'm guessing because a lot of it's crappy and people have a low tolerance for irritating things due to a lack of understanding for how the world works.

I don't have anything against cosplayers, and I say that as a good cosplayer(Luigi) and a bad cosplayer(Tartarus).

I have nothing against it done properly.
I understand the mentality of it, since I refuse to go anywhere not in a band shirt. And a few of my friends cosplay. But if it's awful it seems more like a slight.

I like it as long as it's done well, and is appropriate to the situation.
Anime convention: Yes
Shopping Mall opening: No

It's the sort of thing you have to go all out on. I've dressed up for Halloween, but never other times. Then again I wouldn't say no to a Dalek costume.

Right, so asking "Why do people find cosplay fun?" implies that I'm questioning cosplay fans on a higher level. I think you misunderstood the tone of my question, I wasn't throwing down cosplay, just asking it's genuine fans why they do it out of genuine curiosity. So quit being a jerk about it.

What's funny is that you still can't manage to give me a real answer without cussing or throwing me down some more, which is kind of funny because you're a hypocrite of the same "bullshit philosophy" you labeled me with. Don't mind me if I choose to ignore your remarks in the future.
"bullshit philosophy" and "philosophical bullshit" are two totally different things. A "bullshit philosophy" (your words) would imply that I believe that your philosophy is bullshit.

wordsmith said:

on the other hand, is talking bullshit (rubbish) in a philosophical manner. In the order I used the words, it meant that the philosophical thought that I put down was un-needed bullshit. The way you re-ordered the words, you saw an insult where there wasn't one.

To the original point, you asked "Why do people find cosplay fun?". My reply about questioning them on a higher level was that your question could be replied to with "Why do you find your hobby fun?" The answer? Because you find it fun. Does there have to be any other reason?

I fail to see how I was "throwing [you] down some more" (direct quote, so I don't mix the words around and get a totally different meaning or anything), especially as neither swearword was aimed at you. I called myself a lazy **** (true) and I said that I was talking bullshit with the "higher-level" philosophical argument. You asked a question of cosplayers, I flipped that question back at you, and now I'm throwing you down? (incidentally, that means insulting, right? It's just a turn of phrase that I've not heard before).

I can only dislike cosplaying when it's done horribly wrong. When done right and perfect (in addition to just dressing up like the character they act like them.) you get stuff like this.
