You know, I'm all for calling out those who don't respect video gaming, but how about creating an editorial news forum for stuff like this? Because that's all this is...an editorial. It's not news. Not anywhere close.

I challenge the second to last sentence of this article. All games are art and ignorance of this only causes more confusion for people on the outside looking in.
You don't know much about art theory do you.

Actually im an art student, so yeah.....you need to expand your notion of what is art. if you just decide something doesn't count as art then your just as bad as those who don't respect the dada movement. Whether certain games serve as good art is another question

Let me preface this by saying that, yes, FOX News was guilty of biased and largely inflammatory reporting all while claiming to be fair and balanced. However, it does the gaming industry and gamers no good to respond with equally biased and inflammatory attacks against them. It only serves to make the industry, and gamers look like the immature small minded cretins that they are accusing us of being in the first place.

Just look at any number of the posts in this thread alone and ask yourself if there aren't more than a few that serve to do nothing more than reinforce almost every single negative stereotype levied against gamers by FOX News and their ilk. At some point, if we are going to claim to be better than FOX News we ought to at least act like it. It serves no purpose to look for any opportunity to attack FOX news for looking for any opportunity to attack gaming. We are no better than them when we do this. Even worse than that when we act like this and respond to their one sided reporting in kind we only succeed at proving them right in what they say about gaming and gamers.

The artistic value of an object isn't definable by its medium. So not every painting is art, not every piece of music is art, not every movie is art and not every videogame is art. Therefore you can't say that all games are art, because they're not.

Says you. There are many who would agree that every painting is a work of art and to me this expands to all media. Like I said there is good art and bad art but saying that something doesn't even qualify is disrespectful to the creators

Read this article. Watched the video.

This article seemed to be just as biased as the supposed video.
Heres the thing: It wasn't so much as 'Games aren't Art' so much as it was 'Games shouldn't be funded by the Gov't when there are better things we can do with our money'. I can agree with the latter.

The radio host admittedly wasn't very educated on the industry, and the moderator's opening statements about 'Should the gov't pay money for call of duty' are most certainly outlandish. That said, there's kinda a point to it.

Games are art. Thats my opinion.
However to a point I agree: We shouldn't cut 'legitimate' business to help an industry that is growing plenty on its own, especially where lack of cash for indy developers isn't a problem. Or at least its slowly become less of a problem.

So basically, theres more being blown outta proportion here than just the news video itself. In addition, does this really effect the average reader of this site? Unless you ALL are indy developers this commentary will not effect you. Nor will it effect the average Fox News viewer.
I sincerely doubt someone saw that and immediately phoned their local senator to try and change said bill.
But the organization doesn't support the industry, or even indie developers; it supports and funds non-profit artists why create public pieces that have a strict social value. All that has changed is that those non-profit, pro-social artistic pieces can now also be games. Even if it became the most beautiful artistic piece in the world, CoD, nor Minecraft, nor even something like Braid would ever, ever get funding from this. That's just what Fox very stupidly assumes.

dude....what the hell is wrong with you?

How exactly will that help our cause?

How will that show that people who play games are mature, sensible human beings?

Right now FOX sees us as a bunch of violent, anti-social shut-ins, who's first response to every taunt is violence.

You're playing right into their hands. That's how they work. They say misleading, ignorant things to incite an outraged response, and right when someone makes a threat, or takes violent action, they go on the defensive and portray themselves as the victims. It's exactly what they did with Prop 8 in California, spouting lies and misinformation, and when the proposition passed, and otherwise reasonable people were protesting in the streets, FOX sits back and says "Look, we were right, they gays are a bunch of violent, evil, sinners who are angry that the lord won this round."

Great job dude

"Not to its credit, the very first line of the Fox News segment set a poor tone that would continue through to the end. "Should the videogame Call of Duty get federal funding," the host asks, while showing violent clips of the game. Anyone that had done their basic research on the NEA's guidelines would know that Call of Duty isn't anywhere remotely close to getting federal funding. This line is either ignorantly or intentionally manipulative, which in either case is extremely disappointing coming from one of the nation's most popular news outlets."

Thats FOX NEWS in a nutshell. If you ever watch that garbage feel free to keep this in mind. They use this exact type of setup/tactic for every piece they cover. FOX is nothing more than corporate propaganda. Besides, they prefer real war. You know, the kind that turns a fat profit for Mr. Murdock.

How so, its not even making a point. Its just point out fox news in being idiotic. "You guys are biased too" is Fox's tagline defense and its BS.

I was going to read and reply to this thread, but then I remembered that Fox News is never going to change, and anyone who finds them relevant is equally narrow minded, thus the only people who will read my complaints will agree with me.

I think it might be time to stop giving Fox the time of day, their incessant bitching hasn't stopped us before, and I think we're about passed the point that we need to pretend that they're anything more then sensationalist idiots, the attention just makes it look like we're taking them seriously, and get's them more press.

I really hope none of you are genuinely surprised by this. I'm fairly certain Fox "News" do this type of thing for attention, and also to fuel people like Jon Stewart. That said, I'll stick with the Daily Show thank you very much. As a "fake" news program they sure do a better job.
