I am absolutely sure that calling something free that has a cover charge is nothing but a lie.
Hey, Guild Wars could get away with it. :p
Getting away with a lie doesn't change that it's still a lie.

I like the idea of a cover charge for in game credits, I'm willing to play a game for a game upfront and I'm willing to pay for optional DLC, this idea give me both but yes it's not free to play.

I can forgive CCP on this one. English is their second language for the most part.

: P

I won't forgive them for PS3 only tho : (
It's entirely possible they meant free as in Non-Subscription but it just came out wrong. So much like you I can forgive providing they correct it at some point.

well so much for that ps3 exclusive.

well ill just wait for guild wars which is LITERALLY free to play (you buy the actual game of course)
But its the exact same thing. In both cases you have to pay upfront for the actual game but no monthly fees.
Yeah, but just saying that your buying the disc for a game and tricking people with a "cover fee" is two different things.

"Free" is one of those words like "epic" that completely lost it's meaning as soon as the internet got ahold of it.

Doesn't change the fact that CCP are a bunch of fucking crooks, but whatever.

This is comical to read. So they are charging for the game that they plan to make free to the play. They could have just said nothing and charged normally and then later reveal they are making it F2P, you know like every MMO in existence that isn't rolling in WOW $$.

So who is gonna wait until it goes F2P b4 playing this? I sure will :D

Fair point, Mr. Pétursson.

Now, I'd like to show you my product. Its called not getting kicked in the crotch. Its like not getting kicked in the crotch, but with more getting kicked in the crotch. Eventually, I will stop not kicking you in the crotch.

This is basically what Guild Wars is doing except they are going to give you cash shop tokens equivalent to what you pay to get in.

They are really playing a blinder as far as bad decisions go at the moment. Though I get the feeling that if they hadn't had such a backlash recently this would have probably been much, much worse.

And yes I also wish it wasn't PS3 exclusive but this is not the place to talk about that.

Sounds like that loophole scalpers use to get around resale restrictions on tickets.

"No no no, the ticket itself is free, you're paying $300 for the bobblehead."

Wow. They just just slashed at least a third of the sale figures, pre-release. I am impressed by their sheer stupidity. *slow clap*

Afaik Guild Wars never advertised as being free, just no monthly subscriptions.

They need to be paid for their work, but they shouldn't call it free.

Reading this, it sounds like when a bar has a two drink minimum. If the bar says the beer is free. Just not the glass.

A few people have mentioned that it could have been a language barrier, which would make some sense. But to me it feels like a poorly concealed marketing stunt.

This is called defrauding your customers with a mandatory microtransaction. I'm not surprised though, seeing as this coincides with CCP's fuck-up during the Incarna launch and the bullshit novelty store in EVE, now they have to try and bleed their customers a bit just to sustain their business.

How about not committing fraud while you guys are at it? Maybe more people will be enticed to join if you weren't being EA-dishonest?!
