So it's free in the same sense that going to Disney is free, you can drive around the outside of the park but you have to pay to get in.

Is this a game you buy in stores?

'Cause if so, then it's sure the funniest form of 'free' I've ever seen.

Fair point, Mr. Pétursson.

Now, I'd like to show you my product. Its called not getting kicked in the crotch. Its like not getting kicked in the crotch, but with more getting kicked in the crotch. Eventually, I will stop not kicking you in the crotch.
That's sounds like a super deal! But is it free?

wow...just wow. I mean, I've been studying marketing double-speak, but this takes the cake. I mean, could he even say that with a straight face? It's like saying that the new free to players of TF2 are never going to pay for it. (Okay, some will resist, but most will surrender to the hats)

Don't you just love euphemisms?

The real innovation here is in marketing. They're "re-branding" price tags into "cover charges", implying that they're actually doing you a favor by not charging to also play the game.

Gee, thanks CCCP. Same shit, different name. It's called a price tag.

This is basically what Guild Wars is doing except they are going to give you cash shop tokens equivalent to what you pay to get in.
Guild Wars never hid what it was doing behind doublespeak, and never insisted it was a free game.

They were always upfront about it being a game you bought, but didn't have a paid subscription. They didn't claim it was free. That's the difference... this company is stating, literally, the game is free.

Instead, they should say 'It's LIKE it's free!' It's more honest.

So they took a game that is on the PC, made a shooter to integrate into this universe and decided to make it PS3 only...and then adding an odd cover charge...anyone else see the total collapse of logic in this?

ASA and the FTC may both have something more... litigious... to say about this if they don't change the wording of their hype before launch.

There's a legal definition of "Free," and this doesn't meet it.

For those complaining about Guild Wars, Guild Wars was touted as "free multiplayer," which it was. You paid for the game, then didn't have to pay a subscription fee to play online.

This is a rather old "technique":
'Here, take this STUFF'S_NAME_HERE. It's free!' Said the wo/man with an encouraging smile.
A tingle around your spine warned yout that this is a trap, but tingles are there to be ignored, right? You took the thing, and thanked the nice person for their kindness.
'I'm raising funds for NAME_OF_ORGANIZATION_YOU_NEVER_HEARD_OF_HERE. Would you like to donate?' S/he said, still with a kind smile, quickly turning to that of a predator. The tingle by now, was rather like a tower bell, warning everyone about half the town burning, in case anyone failed to notice.
'Sorry, I don't have money on me right now...' You said defensively, either because you really didn't or because you finally heeded the inner alarm.
'Then fuck yourself!' Said the wo/man and tore the thing out of your hand while storming away, looking for their next victim.

I don't know if this happens in the West (compared to Eastern Europe) but I doubt it doesn't. I think this trick really old...

Then nobody buys it because they think it will go free in the future so the game fails. The end.

I understand what they're saying and they have a point, and they never said the game was free, it's just free to play online. We only assume free to play means no up front cost, but it could mean that or just no monthly fee .

I can forgive CCP on this one. English is their second language for the most part.

: P

I won't forgive them for PS3 only tho : (
It's entirely possible they meant free as in Non-Subscription but it just came out wrong. So much like you I can forgive providing they correct it at some point.
Sorry. You don't get to play the 'misunderstood' card when you go into that much detail to -prove- that is free.

It's not that they said 'It's free!' and then later go 'Oh, sorry, we didn't realize that word means something nuanced and different in English.' No, they went into detail about how buying in is actually getting into a free game, using terms like 'cover charge' etc etc etc to deliberately skirt the issue of the fact you're paying to play.

There's no language issue here, other than they're attempting to make words mean what they do not actually mean.

Right...

Heres the deal kids...

When an MMO is released everyone assume there is going to be a monthly fee...

There is no monthly fee, it is free to play in the sense there is no subscription fee...

Free to play is the term used to describe that in most cases...

The idea is that while you have to pay to get in through the door, the Free to play is the fact there is no subscription. Guildwars is advertised as Free to play, but you had to PAY FOR THE GAME anyways...

Besides, there not just taking you money and telling you to fuck off, your getting in game credits out of it. So unlike a cover charge your kinda pre-buying the beer, and are actually getting the beer...

However, this is to be expected. I find people like to vomit obscene amounts of rage over every minor thing that happens. This is not a big deal...

CCP is giving us a master-class in how to alienate fans and dilute your good name.

The reason why free to play games work is because there is no entry charge, you just download it and see if you like it. If you do, you buy extra content like skins and extras. There is no risk involved so people can get sucked in with no barriers. This is a bad business move because they just made a barrier to playing their pay for content game. It may not fail, but it will have to be a huge cut above other "free" games to stand a chance.
