Critics of the CFA currency arrangement have called it a relic of colonialism, saying it has impeded economic development for the 14 African countries that are part of it.
They also argue that they have no say in deciding monetary policies agreed to by European nations in the Eurozone.
An article for the US-based Brookings Institute last year said that while countries using the CFA franc had generally seen lower inflation, the CFA franc arrangement limits their policy options, particularly in dealing with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Other economists have pointed out that annual average GDP growth - the increase in the value of all goods and services produced - of CFA countries and other African economies has been fairly comparable over time.
The reason you want to control your currency is the precise reason France doesn't want them to control their currency; to make your exports more desirable, also .75% interest is nothing, US treasury bills give more than this, it's literal French robbery. You want to at the beginning inflate your currency to make your exports cheaper than increase it as you go into higher-value goods. You also need to control your foreign policy in order to play China, the EU, and the US against each other to get the best deal. Also, somethings you need to inflate your currency because your economy needs a stimulus in order to make up for shortfalls in welfare, and taxes.
France stops all of this in order to fuel their delusional colonial empiredom, and make more people speak French for cultural reasons. And for the EU to get cheap Niger import commodities.
I could also care less if Niger Gold went into the Swiss vs the French, they are both allies and Niger uranium does go into France.
Edit: I also don't like Italy's immigration policy, and I despise the five-star movement, and the fascists in Italy, but broken clocks sometimes work.

OK, but none of this is acknowledging that Meloni's claim was entirely, 100% wrong. There is no 'broken clock' moment here; she didn't just say French influence in the region was damaging (which is true)-- she made a series of specific claims, and was lying. There is no requirement for 50% of export revenue to go to France. They are storing a portion of reserve currency with a French institution (voluntarily and gaining interest), and have access to any/all of it at any time. It's also untrue to say they do not control their own monetary policy because they use the Franc-- sure, the stability of the currency is affected by the vagaries of the wider bloc of countries that use it (as with the eurozone), but that's not the same thing.
