"Woke" and "anti-woke" has nothing to do with North Korea. "Woke" is really just the modern incarnation of what 10+ years ago used to be pejoratively called "political correctness": awareness of minority sensitivities in our social interactions. North Korea exists for geopolitical reasons of national competition between China and the West.

And for the record, believing Zhang Taofang killed 200+ enemy soldiers is much like believing any country's wartime estimates of their opponents' casualties. It's almost certainly a grossly inflated figure for publicity purposes.

The Korea were both authoritian until the last couple of decades. It wasn't until the US reduced thier influence of SK that they started having some sort of democracy... For the record most of China's political and business elite are men. It's like 75% to 25%. And South Korea is facing the consequences of using lots of plastic surgery, hyper misogynist-rule. The birth rate is the lowest in the world, but that doesn't mean North Korea's birth rate is above 2.1 either. They are at around 1.86.

And I doubt South Korean women or men would like to be under the Kim Dynasty whom China would put in charge of SK.

The argument probably was that while NK is more shitty, SK is more anti-woke. It is basically refuting/ignoring your equation of anti-wokeness with authoritan regimes you don't like and/or the retreat of the US.

It might also be a reference how some of the recent SK antics have been received in China, giving credit to the idea that China is slightly less anti-woke on some issues.



As for me, i don't think it is all that beneficial to try to squeeze geopolitics into this woke/anti-woke nonsense. Geopolitics should be in other threads.

Determining how "anti-woke" NK is seems impractical. We have virtually no idea what goes on there, and it's a society so hopelessly removed from our own to usefully compare it in such terms.

However, who seriously believes NK is not socially regressive? Sure, Communist regimes made a loud noise about how progressive they were, but it was in substantial part a veneer. Take a look at China or Russia now and have a think on how much of those alleged values really got through to the populace and their working systems. They are (by Western standards) more racist, sexist and patriarchal, homophobic (etc.) societies. For instance, of the CCP's central committee, just 11 of 205 members are women and in the current Politburo, 0 out of 25. In Russia, the situation is relatively similar.

I considered writing something like that but then went for "we just shouldn't use woke/anti-woke to analize those topics". It is not all that worthwile to discuss from far away which of those three countries qualifies as most anti-woke. That is not what makes them different from each other.

Its certainly a funny situation but to be fair Sparta was such a poorly constructed hellhole that its time as hegemon or just a major force was destined to end sooner rater than later.
