One of the buildings is called the Octagon and will be the largest military building in the world. I guess that they want to do what every unequal country like Brazil wants to do. Separate the powerful from the powerless.
I almost admire Egypt's military for its ambition to build a gated community on such a grand scale.

And much more defensible to pack all the elites in a new city - it would be such a mess trying to fight off a rebellion in a massive, congested city like Cairo.

Not exactly holding my breath for them giving up opposition to surrogacy anytime soon. It goes against their core ideas about marriage.

I could more easily see them move on transgender, but then again, the decision makers are all very old men so i expect them to be late here. And even then it will likely also hit another snag when it comes to marriage and procreation.

Yeah, but so is, or was, gay marriage, right? And the pope decreed that it was alright to bless a same sex marriage not too long ago.

This could be them extending an olive branch to christian evangelicals after the fall-out over the blessing gay marriages thing. I'm sure it won't make the overal public anymore disillusioned over catholicism than they already are. Though not because they're trans inclussive - that's still a hefty and effective fear mongering topic - but because of the surrogacy issue. There's a lot of people out there who want children but can't physically have them, and for a religion to go 'well, fuck you then'... hmmm.

Anyway, fuck the vaticaan for pulling this shit now that reproductive rights have suffered a serious blow and trans people are the world's black sheep.

Reproductive rights have received a serious blow in the US which is coincidently also where the trans issues are particularly prominent but where not even 20% of the population are catholic. I don't think that is too important for the Vaticans decision making. For the same reason i don't think they are trying to appease evangelicals.

The reason why those statements get out now is because Catholics are suddenly interested in answers to those topics. And as always in such cases, they go to old scripture and various old interpretations from important theological scholars to find the answers. And, as often, those are not the answers people really want to hear.

But until they find the way to convince themselves that what the bible actually wanted to convey is something else than was believed for so long, they won't change their stance.
Those things do happen, but on their very own timescale governed by theological debate and maybe the occasional convent.

As said, i am more hopeful for them moving on trans, mostly because trans was less of an issue in the past so there is little to overturn. Also they don't really appear in the bible itself as such. So it is way easier a topic than homosexuality.
But surrogacy ? Couples paying others to birth their children ? That touches a lot of issues that have been condemned in the past and each of those must be argued to be a totally different thing.

While I am respectful and have no problem with different religions and different beliefs, the Catholic Church can go fuck themselves. I say this is as a person and a Christian, though I am not Catholic. Methodist-Baptist.

Yeah, there's religions, and there's beliefs, and there's big churches with massive secular power.

Bless the individuals, not the "marriage".

Everyone has their burdens. Nobody is going to be supported in killing people to fix their own personal issues.

Not a chance. Moving on a specific moral interpretation, no matter how contrary to traditional teachings, is still far more likely than them announcing unicorns are real.

So surrogacy is "killing people" now too, huh?
No.
It is (supposedly) exploitation of the women carrying the child for money. At least that is the main argument of the pope. He also mentioned similarities to trafficking of children and dignity issues. The church also doesn't particularly like IV for various reasons. But as far as i know, they never called surrogacy "killing people".
