That will get them killed in the long run. They need to get Turkey to join them, and they need Russian land/possibly people to bolster their population's consumption. They cannot rely on their non-existing navies to guard their trade interests forever.
Europe was so heavily damaged by WW2 that the whole continent is still traumatized and does not condone any border change by war. That is also why Europe still got taken by surprise when Russia invaded Ukraine - they just couldn't believe that Russia didn't have a similar aversion.

A cursory look gives the EU navies over 500 warships including 4 fleet carriers. That is less carriers but far more ships than the US has. And that is even without the UK, a traditional naval power with its own carriers. Not willing to invest the time to compare every single class but the European navy is strong enough to beat any plausible challenge for the time being.

Mm.

"Taken by surprise" probably requires some context, given that developments occurred over the course of so many years. 2014 was almost certainly a surprise. However, the fact Europe was in substantially no better state to protect its interests in 2022 has a lot more to do with things like wishful thinking, lack of vision, or negligence.

Florida especially loves setting its people up for failure. How the fuck do they expect anyone to get anything done?
Maybe Florida doesn't need an educated workforce, it just needs a bunch of labourers to do the grunt work for the retirement villages where the real money is.

It's the deep, underlying dream of many of the economic elites: more servile peasants to order around and make them feel superior.

It's where they are going, steadily but surely. For instance, one might take New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, a major 1st Amendment case from yesteryear that made it substantially harder for the rich and powerful to win defamation cases. Oh boy, they're gunning for that, they've got one of their usual toadies, SCOTUS Justice Clarance Thomas, aiming to take it down for them. We're not supposed to question them.

There was no test you had to pass when I went to high school to graduate and test scores back then are higher than they are now. Instead wasting time on such a test, maybe teach kids basic computer literacy. I work IT at a college and the students here fall for this Bank Mobile phishing attempt daily and lose their financial aid money. They can't get taught in high school not to click on links in emails?

The people were already deported prior to the ruling...
Very last line of the article

But a timeline of events reported by US media suggests the Trump administration appears to have had the opportunity to stop at least some of the deportations.
And then the update

  • 17:25 EDT: A first flight believed to be carrying deportees leaves Texas, according to data from tracking site Flightradar24. Takeoff happens while a hearing held by Judge Boasberg is paused. Earlier that afternoon, the White House said Trump was invoking the Alien Enemies Act
  • 17:44 EDT: A second flight believed to be carrying deportees leaves Texas, according to Flightradar24
  • 18:05 EDT: Boasberg's hearing resumes and the government declines to say if deportations are ongoing, according to ABC News
  • 18:46 EDT: Boasberg orders the government to turn around the two planes if they are carrying non-citizens, according to ABC
  • 19:26 EDT: Boasberg issues his written order for a temporary restraining order, according to ABC
  • 19:36 EDT: A third flight believed to be carrying deportees leaves Texas, according to Flightradar24

You're dangerously close to veering from fascist apologist into straight up putting on the BOSS and celebrating the roman empire.

Please stop using words like fascism when it doesn't apply. You expect a judge's order to immediately be processed and enforced by government agencies? It was a 10 minute gap...

Well, then, it's time for Europe to get undamaged and change its ways, or else it will decline further.

Plus most of the 'warships' aren't big enough to protect EU interests in Asia, and South America. It's doubtful whether they can enforce their will if Iran for example cuts fossil fuels via missile strikes in the Strait of Hormuz to Europe to extract financial concessions from them or try to block off Indian Ocean exports to Europe. And their navy and overseas bases are barely enough for West Africa, Russia, and North Africa.

Most of those warships don't have dual-use anti-ship and anti-air capabilities, and they have short range. I am guessing many don't have AESA and/or Aegis radars installed. Don't even get me started on the lack of anti-land capabilities on those ships either.

I am guessing many of those ships are corvette-sized or smaller. It may seem like I want Europe to fall, but in reality, it would damage my well-being if the Trump admin wins. If they take over Canada I lose the option to get cheap prescription drugs if I need them (I don't right now), and if Mexico hates the US no more cheap avocados. Even if Europe becomes a little more than a US vassel state or Russian one or a rump state I lose the ability to have a Nexusmods membership, many good VPNs, and some of the best modders for Skyrim are European alongside Chinese and so forth. Why do you guys think I voted for the Democrats?

This is why Europe needs to stand on its two feet and have the military credibility to stand up to Trump, but they can't do that if all they do is whining, and excuses.

the hate farms are working overtime, people I know have said their parents have become radicalised by GB news too, ppl that should know better, and don't live anywhere near places reactionary RW news fearmongers about. the intensity of the propaganda is effective, it works cos people's brains are soft and vulnerable to manipulation when not taught media literacy skills and logical fallacies deployed to exploit the working classes into distrusting and voting against each other. we need to prepare for a reform election win at least, the information brokers and data funnels have been saturated by monopolised ideology cos it all ultimately feeds back into inflating the wealth of the upper classes

I doubt that, for a generation or two after WW2, lots of nations in Europe were preparing for the next big war. In the hope it wouldn't happen, but still.

They did.

Cold War military spending in Europe was ridiculously high. Everyone was on edge, knowing Europe would be the primary battlefield between the superpowers.
But they really didn't like this. And when the Cold War ended, peacefully, everyone was so happy and believed all the other Europeans (including Russians) felt the same. And as the Soviet Union willingly gave up its hold over Eastern Europe, it seemed strange to think Russia would try to reestablish it by force. Admittedly the Baltics were always a bit sceptical.

While, I'm the first to admit I was surprised that Russia actually went for it, I don't think it's the trauma of WW2 that's the reason, given the time frame involved, I mean.
