You're missing the important story. Those computers were running WC3. Which, it being Valve, can only mean DotA.

I want to know more about DOTA2 DAMMIT D: D: D:

The cool thing about Steam Guard is that it is mostly hardware based, so it's not like you can get in through cloning IP or MAC addresses. The processor is running the show. Getting into that account is most likely only possible by physically stealing that computer.

Of course, that's also the bad thing about Steam Guard...

am i the only one who is hoping valve has some damn good antispam filters for thier company email? or thinking of sending him an email that just says hi
He has given out his e-mail many times before. It's in the developer commentary of every Valve game.

I imagine he gets about 20 e-mails per day asking about HL2 Ep3.

So even if someone does manage to crack into Gabe's account?

HE'S THE CEO OF VALVE!!

He'll just disable the account in a heartbeat - then create a duplicate account with the password "LoomyWTF." There's no incriminating evidence on his page - it's his Steam account, not his Valve internal password - the only prize you'd get is every game ever released on Steam ever, and the chance to write "LOLOLOL IM GAEB NEWLL EPISOED 3 IZ DELAIED LOL!" in his account description.

Within five minutes of it being hacked it'd be gone and replaced.

It doesn't matter how strong your protection is, none of us regular Joes will ever have the added security of owning the company.

With effort someone could hack into his account. But that's the whole point - it would take effort. This measure is simply designed to provide protection for everyday users in case someone steals their password and username (which wouldn't be hard to do). However, it is very unlikely that someone would put in the effort to hack through this security measure, if you're just an everyday user.

Nothing is "unbreakable" (except the one-time cipher pad), but you'd have to seriously annoy someone to have them put that much effort into stealing your account.

It's a good option, a good layer of security, and it's for free. What's the harm?

Why are people calling Gabe a "troll"? Just because he wants to improve computer security? Just because he issued a challenge? That's a strange way of looking at things. The internet has really changed society for the worse, you know. It really has. It's been a wonderful boon to the scientific and technological community, but it's been a blight on our social lives.

Actually, I take that back - Humanity has always been like this. It's just that we now have the means to act like how we feel. Well, that's made me depressed.

Oh god Gabe, don't say "Can't" to the Internet...

Obviously no hacker would ever WANT to hack Gabe's account, I mean it's Gabe freaking Newell, I haven't met a single person who hates the guy.
You don't get hackers. Gabe said "can't". That removes him from all protection.

Needless to say, it didn't work.

... dammit, we just made a new meme.
No, we haven't. Stop that.

Memes are like catchphrases, they catch on by themselves. If someone says something funny and someone goes 'HEY GUYS I THINK THIS IS A NEW CATCHPHRASE' what happens? You kill any chance of it being so.

Good job.

I'm pretty sure he's fully prepared for that possibility. It helps they've admin accesss to change that password if something goes wrong. If somebody does successfully beat the system that's good news for them: they found a hole to plug.

That's not the only spelling error. Both uses of "authorisation" have been misspelt. "Authorisation" is spelt with an "s", not a "z".

Not in America. It's spelt with a z here.

This is probably some dummy account created for demonstration purposes. If somebody cracks it nice job, but you ain't gonna get anything worthwhile for it.

This kinda reminds me of that Blizzard guy giving out his real name to try and prove that people using RealID couldn't find any personal info on you just by seeing your name.

Incase you don't know the story, it took the forum goers all of 15 minutes to find his address and send pizzas to his house. And that was the tamest thing they did.
They went too far by posting pictures of his family members, including the children. That they took themselves.
And that is why you don't go waving your e-Peen at the hacker community, there are some freakishly skilled people out there that can make internet anonymity non-existent.
And as usual lessons must be learned the hard way, not saying hackers were right, I'm saying he should know better then to wrestle a bear.

Newell is really confident this is gonna work.
At least STEAM is evolving, if not at his own risk.
To be fair, from how I understand it this new Steamguard is not based on super elite crypto programming.
I'm guessing any decent programmer can crack this. The kicker is that programmer or someone has to enter Gabe's house and physically access his computer. That's what make it almost impossible to crack from the Internet.

If someone does decide to break into Gabe's house mind looking for Episode 3 while you're there?

Never heard about this, don't know if it's true.

If it is true... how is it "too far"? It was just enough in my opinion. It proved to everyone that the system was completely bogus and people's privacy, person and families were at risk.

Aside from that, it would just put your privacy on the line no matter what. One could simply make an accusation according to the RealID name, to any person outside of the forums/game. There is absolutely no need for it, and I don't see why any independent, sensible person would support a system like this. If forums bother people so bad, then just piss off and watch TV because clearly people are taking it far.. Far too serious.

Did anything happen to the children or people in question? No. So it wasn't in bad taste, it's a win in my opinion.

It's not like they "hacked" him anyway. He was a Blizzard employee yes? Well that's a small pool of people to select a name from. Still, they got the address either way, impressive.
