Not one of these games was made for the App Store.
Except
Monkey Island
Mass Effect (series)
Devil May Cry
Tomb Raider
Metal Gear Solid
Call of Duty:
Silent Hill
Assassin's Creed
Dead Space
I do believe you got served, sir.

Also, a very interesting list. I'd love to see who voted and why they chose the games they did.

Also, I should probably start playing Baldur's Gate. Best game of all time, huh?

Baldur's Gate is easily my #1 story based game of all time though the Civ series is probably where I have the most hours logged. This seems like it would be a really hard list to make too...

I mean games have been around long enough now for milestone games to have been improved on but never really replicated. For instance, they never really made a better version of Space Quest 3 and yet that game was amazing. Monkey Island, Quest for Glory, Grim Fandango... Hell remember Zeliard? Someone's gotta remember that game.

Seeing how I'm STILL playing Baldurs Gate 2 and call it my favourite RPG to date, I can buy number 1. The others on the list though.. not so much.

Lets face it, it is impossible to create a top 20 list that everyone will agree with. However, out of a of lists I have seen, this is one of the best, even if I don't agree with a few of the choices up there. Personally, I wouldn't have Devil May Cry, Assassins Creed or Dead Space on there because I don't think they're worthy of being called 'one of the best games ever'. Besides those though, the list is rather well constructed.

That's a pretty good list, other than no Half-Life...the tough question is what you'd bump off of that list. I'd probably bump Devil May Cry, but then again it's all personal opinion.

Its a good list, just last night i was thinking of replaying baldurs gate for the (tenth time in my life).
To those that say DMC doesnt belong to the list... yes it does, its really that good. Dunno if so high in it, but it does belong there. Now, the tomb raider series on the other hand...

Besides the Nintendo entries, Silent Hill, DMC and Shadow of the Colossus this list is mostly North American. Derp. A worldwide list needs to be done. This is a little one sided to say the least. No Final Fantasy, no Doom or Quake, no VALVE? Major malfunctions here.

Which is odd, considering what sells REALLY ought to be the same thing as what people want to play. Also, you'd hope some indie dev would make one. Makes me wish I could program.
*shrug* Well, what game developers want to play is not necessarily the same as what the average consumer wants.

As for indie devs, I can name one.

There are some obvious omissions, but tbh, in a list of 20 favourite (not best) games the majority are easily agreed with.

To respond to some commenters earlier in the thread querying the inclusion of Tomb Raider: you have to understand that although recently the Tomb Raider series has been a bit of a joke, back in the day (1+2, 3+4 slightly less so and the series went to shit with 5 imo) it was hugely popular. As this is a list of favourite games, and most devs fit into a 20-30 age bracket they're of the right age to have been influenced by it- note that the top three are all games from the mid-late 90s, when devs would have been kids or teens...

I'm satisfy with the list althought it kind of suprise me that there are no JRPG in the list at all (no love for Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy for that matter). I would of remove Dead Space and put one of Valve game in there somewhere on the list.

That's actually a rather good list. There are no real surprises in there. Some I like, Some I don't care for. But all clearly solid well designed games.

Shadow of the Colossus? That was their number four? What the fuck are they smoking and how can I get some?

For those who haven't played that game, don't. For those who have, I weep for you.

I can respect most of this list but I have to strongly disagree with Tomb Raider being on the list. Not only for being on the list but even beating game series like Bioshock, Metal Gear and even Assassins Creed! I mean dont get me wrong Lara Croft is a reconized video game icon but only because she was designed to be a sex symbol and dudes agree she is smoking hot but her video games themselves were and still are lacking the quality that all the other games on the list have and shine on with! But again this is all personal opinion just like the basis for this list so I'm not mad or anything but rather shocked and just wanted to throw in my thoughts on the matter cause I love video games too much lol.

Portal and Half Life should've been there, but atleast Starcraft was in top10.
I've never played Baldur's Gate, but I keep hearing it's great and now it "won" this one, do you guys think I should give Baldur's Gate a go?

Fuck yeah! Baldur's Gate. Probably my all-time favorite game. Or at the very least in my top five.

I approve this list. Well, except for WoW, but whatever.
