What's most surprising and sad to me is that Monkey Island cracked it, but neither Day of the Tentacle nor Grim Fandango had a spot, both of which I (and many others) would consider superior to monkey island. Opinion and all, sure... but I feel like monkey island is just the go-to game for adventure games, when there are others that are superior. Then again, no list of this kind is perfect, soooooo...

While a few odd choices, I'm certainly willing to throw some support behind anything that recognizes one of my all time top 5 games, Baldur's Gate.

Portal and Half Life should've been there, but atleast Starcraft was in top10.
I've never played Baldur's Gate, but I keep hearing it's great and now it "won" this one, do you guys think I should give Baldur's Gate a go?
Yes, if you know you're the kind of person that can look past graphics and either enjoy or are not bothered by some old school design choices then it's certainly worth picking up. You can get the whole series for around $20 from Good Old Games and avoid any installation hassles too.

I'm fairly certain that Wolfenstein 3D did more for the gaming industry than CoD 4.

Oh Hell Yeah, Baldur's Gate for the win!

Although there was a lack of Half Life and Hitman series (in my opinion).

dead space??? really every other game on here I can see a reason for, except for dead space the game is so and so, but there is nothing new here what so ever. Where's the fallout series? where's planescape tormented? where's half life? where's the elder scrolls series?

Thank Darwin i don't give a damn about popular opinion.

I've set up my own list of top games and it's the only one i'll ever trust, and i don't even expect other people to care about my list since it's all just personal opinion.
Thanks for the contribution, chump. But I don't really think anyone's interested in hearing about how you aren't interested in the list. I'm sure there are better threads for you to act like a rebel in.
And what are you? The moderator? Just pointing out you didn't exactly contribute either with that post, dude :p

But i'd say pointing out how such a list doesn't really have much point to it at all because people will play the games they like regardless of what others think is a valid point to make here.

These kinds of list are really just for those who are particularily interested in what devs think amongst themselves and really the most you could hope for as a reaction is a "Yeah, that's kinda interesting i suppose". Their favorite games are purely subjective as well so why would their list be news worthy while mine isn't?

You happy now? :p
Then I think you're kinda missing the entire point. Usually these sort of lists are made by people who play games but have no hand in making it, but now they've asked a load of game developers, and that changes shit around. This shows what modern game developers consider to be good games, for us gamers, this is actually pretty fucking important. Whereas what you have to say on the matter is just what one little dude on the internet who hasn't done anything of value for the industry has to say. Do you still honestly think that your opinion should be as highly regarded as theirs?
I'm just a bit curious as to what about this is really important to us as gamers. If the developers are voicing their own personal favorites and putting them on a list that's a purely subjective thing. People's favorite games aren't necessarily perfect games. My favorite games have flaws, but i love them all the same. I don't think that's going to be any different for a bunch of developers.

When you ask someone to tell you about their favorite the nostalgia factor becomes a pretty massive participant in the forming of the opinion.

So again, what part of this is actually important to us as gamers?

While Bio shock was a good game I don't think it deserved to be in a top 20 list. Even for developers knowing more about game mechanics I don't see what could be a glittering jewel of fun. Great game but on the list of top 20 games of all time? Not even close for me.

That's really the only game I have an issue with.

The only one I am really against is Dead Space. The others have a good argument to be there at least.

Daft list in places, nice in others. Did not expect SotC to get so much recognition.

But really now, all else aside, no Planescape? That's got to be at least thirty kilotravesties or so.

Which is odd, considering what sells REALLY ought to be the same thing as what people want to play. Also, you'd hope some indie dev would make one. Makes me wish I could program.
*shrug* Well, what game developers want to play is not necessarily the same as what the average consumer wants.

As for indie devs, I can name one.
Aaaaand, you have made my day. (Skyrim won't run on my PC)

Yes, but start with BG2. The beginning of BG1 has little plot and can be challenging due to the random nature of the D&D system.

OT: A lot of the higher ranks go to older games. Perhaps this is an indication of a trend of quality?
I wouldn't think so. This is asking developers what their favourite games are. They're going to list the games from their younger days that entertained them and probably inspired them to become developers. They're only likely to name newer games that impressed them in some way. It's generally the same with any artists or creative types. And when you're working 14+ hour days making your own art, you don't have a lot of time to see what your peers are doing except from very technical and professional standpoints.

Also, bear in mind these days (going by the credits) 70% or more of the developers working on AAA titles are visual artists of some sort. That might explain why so many of the newer games on this list tend to be titles that did something new or impressive with graphics or animation, even if the other elements aren't up to snuff.

Not saying there isn't a downward trend of quality, just that this list isn't really an indicator of that.

Dead Space is on there? It's not bad or anything, I just didn't realize anyone thought it was top 20 material.
