Quick time events are a pretty popular qualm right now.

Honestly though, how could you not like real-time cutscenes? If anything, that might be a good idea to implement more often. Sure, it's not for every game, but cutscenes that take place in real time can be more effective than those that break away from actual gameplay.

Anyway, another idea developers need to stop doing is padding a game with tedious tasks. I know it's a pretty vague complaint, but here are a few examples.

-In Super Paper Mario, there is a part of the game where you are forced to jump over balls of electricity and run in a hamster wheel in order to pay off an exorbitant debt for breaking a vase. Even though the game gives you an "easy" method of obtaining the exact debt, you still have to raise a hefty sum in order to pay off a guy for the tip. This part of game seems to have been added just to pad the game, and the game was still a little on the short side.

-In Final Fantasy VIII, drawing magic appears to be something of a chore. Okay, and I know I'm going to get flamed for this: I have not actually had the chance to play FFVIII. I did, however, watch all of the videos made by The Spoony One, of Spoony Experiment fame, that exemplified the bad points of the game. The one in particular that shows just how bad the whole "drawing" mechanic can be is his video showing him draw magic in real time. The video lasts 8 minutes and 59 seconds, and it's only showing him draw magic from one of the first enemies in the game.

Granted, a friend of mine, who enjoyed FFVIII, told me there was a more time-effective method of drawing magic (something about "draw points," I think), but it still seems weird. But the stupidest argument I've seen in opposition to The Spoony One's hate of draw magic is this, as seen in his video Ask Spoony: "just set ur setting thingy to memory dumb *****. and tape the X button down wif sumthing heavy or tape." It should never be acceptable to have to tape a button down on your controller in order to do something in a game; it's just counterintuitive to the whole "having fun" aspect of designing a game. Oh, and "setting thingy?" Real specific.

Escort missions

Timed/Escort missions

Higher diff. most games= Stronger enemies, weaker you.
-Fighting games= Enemies that react at computer speed instead of human speed.

How could I forget that one? While I kind of think it fits games like the Mario Party series, tapping a button repeatedly can get annoying fast, especially if the computer can do it faster than should be humanly possible. Consider your opinion seconded.

"Chosen" ANYTHING. I'm sick of it. Why not a game with a bit of free will? Why does it aleays have to be about destiny?

I like it. The only time you can fail is when your finger gets sore.

Quick-time events for certain. I've only played one game where they were implemented effectively and completely and that was the Bourne Conspiracy. And that was a nonstop parade of them.

"Fuck you" cutscnes. Cutscenes wherein all your hardwork is undone in a matter of seconds to lengthen gameplay/story.

Moral choices which essentially lead up to Jesus, come again, or Hitler + Satan. Give us some middle ground for once.

Unskipable dialogues. I'm not talking about everything, just bits of conversation that drone on and on and prevent you from progressing further. It's one thing when it's in halo and you can just run straight through the disembodied voices talking into your helmet to go fight things, it's another when the game forces you to slowly walk forward or stand there picking your nose while some NPC drones on and on. (I'm looking at you Gears and Fable II.)

Lack of co-operative game modes. Personally, I love co-op. Whether I'm taking back Stillwater with a friend, or we're just hunting terrorists in Rainbow Six Vegas 2, I love playing co-op. I don't have to deal with unlikable fuckbins who make hate to be online.

The current state of graphics. Seriously, we need more games like Saints Row 2 or Fable II. Less greyish brown, more colors.

Oh, and would you guys stop pausing my downloads while I'm in singleplayer? Cancel it when I allow a co-op partner to join me, not after I load my save.

And design a character. I'm getting tired of my character creation screens having more sliders than a Crave Case.

I'm sure I could add more but I'm really tired.

Would you prefer turn based cutscenes?
Speaking of which one idea I'd like to get rid of is that only people who are afraid make turn based games.

FPSs. Can't stand them, can't understand why anyone needs more than one. It's the same thing over and over, only look! The gun's different! Oh my! That enemy looks new! It's like Malibu Stacy---"only she's wearing a new hat!"

Sequels. Well ok, unlinked sequels that are not much of a change from the original. CoD4 should have been the first direct sequel to CoD imho. If you are not going to continue the original story, change the location/layout/style etc. I don't care if gameplay is similar as long as the enviroment and story are as different as they should be.

I also dislike unoriginal sandboxes. GTA4 is an example of a good sandbox, everything is different and their are no repeated buildings really, at least none important. Bad sandboxes use repeats of everything to stretch the world out, and this I dislike.

Regenerating health.

And people, you can say things that Yhatzee didn't say, watch. The reason for crappy games is that people buy crappy games giving developers incentive to make crappy games.

Captain Planet put it best. "The power is yours!"

I for one do not believe that some game ideas should be stopped from creating a game. Look at Left 4 Dead. How cliche is the scenario? Very... How fun does the game promise to be? Very... see where I'm going with this?

EDIT : And the thread is game ideas that developers need to stop doing not gamePLAY ideas that developers should stop doing (for all those with the quick time events/button mashing comments)

L EDIT : I just reread the first post so I'm guessing that the latter is what the author meant. My bad. I'm adding saving before a long cut scene before a very hard boss fight. (like the last battle in Beyond good and evil)

Developers need to stop making WW2 FPS games and make more Alien Hominids, Metal Slugs, Castle Crashers and God Hand-type games. I want people to make more old school-style games, but to take full advantage of next-gen systems to pump up the graphical quality, sound and size of these titles. Imagine the classic Final Fight gameplay with current-gen graphics, sound and online multiplayer co-op.

River City Ransom, anyone?
