Is there a game you really like or even just like that you don't like to admit you like because of how terrible the fans of the game are or even can't enjoy as much because of how everywhere the fans of the game are? For me it'd probably be Halo
Fans don't ruin games.

The only problems fans create for games exist inside the head of those who gives a crap about the fans, aka. you. Or in short: It's you who are ruining Halo for yourself, because you are letting the fanbase affect you when you don't have to.

Fans, however, sometimes ruins sequels because developers sometimes let them have too much influence instead of following their instincts.
This!! Stop listening to your fans developers! They don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, and will never EVER be satisfied no matter what you do.

Every game ever, really. Or anything, for that matter. Fans can be pretty damn obnoxious.
But also this. Goddamnit I hate fandom!!

Final Fantasy 7. The massive amount of fanboys/fangirls for this game seem to color peoples opinion that it's a crap game, completely forgetting that if it WAS crap, it wouldn't have nearly this many fans.

Call of Duty...all of them.
Mighty ninja!

Also League of legends/Heroes of Newerth

Though I still play
LoL fans don't bother me so much. The worst they can do is raz you in chat, and there is an ignore feature for that.

HoN though...hell I could barely play 3 games of that. I can see why most of the fanbase is so angry though, they paid $30 for that. I tried it free and all three games I went up against enemy teams of all smurf accounts. Who would just stomp us, taunt us and grief us.

Since unlike LoL, HoN actively encourages things like pool camping. There's nothing to stop it. And we had a leaver, so we couldn't surrender. The enemy team in two games refused to end it and just camped the pool.

...fuck that game.

Single player games can't really be ruined by their fanbase. No matter how annoying they are, it doesn't make the game any worse.

Multiplayer are a different story though.

I'd at this point like to bring Final Fantasy 7 up

yes I'm aware it was a lot of peoples 'first RPG' and the cultural significance there of
don't care,
its not the best FF, Sepharoth is FAR from the best villain, and Cloud was never 'cool'

what it IS, is a solid, well made RPG, that deserves SOME of the praise it gets (even if its hard to look at any more XD) with a decent story and characters

TO everyone who says fans don't ruin a game try actually going back and playing the original Portal and try to geniunely enjoy any of the humor that involves the companion cube or the whole cake thing, it's damn near impossible just because of how often those lines are parroted out but overzealous dickhead fans. I would also clarify those are the fans I mean, not just casual fans but the obsessive crazy fans, the dick head fans who just perpetuate the negative stereotypes of gaming.

Final Fantasy VI's fans have made the game seem extremely undesirable to me. I have yet to have Final Fantasy VI pitched to me in a way that isn't just a massive Final Fantasy VII bash.

"Oh, man, it's so much better than VII. You'll HATE VII after you play VI, it's so brilliant."

"It's not until you see how amazing and deep Kefka is that you realize just how awful Sephiroth is. Sephiroth sucks, man, and Kefka will show you why."

"Cloud is such a shitty character. Every character in Final Fantasy VII is shit, man, you'll see when you play VI what a Final Fantasy game should be."

I still have no idea what Final Fantasy VI is about, and I've gotten it pitched at me by hundreds of people. I get it. Everybody hates Final Fantasy VII because all popular things are shit. You're such an edgy, rebellious nonconformist.

Except you're not.

It's been said a couple of times, CoD for me. I actually enjoy the game in parts, I like playing with my mates and online can be pretty good. Then you come to a lobby with a group of cheating little shits or lag switchers (yeah they still exist...) or just plain abusive fucks. Normally about 10 years old (or at least sounding like it) and unfortunately normally american too (I know, I've met some fucking awesome americans on CoD as well, just the dicks tend to be from the other side of the pond too...).

Annoying and it makes me want to just go play private. They also seem to take beef with me and my mates because we're quite good, if I play with my actual clan we win games all the time and that means we should be verbally abused, I give as good as I get but it's fucking boring after a while. I don't care enough to sit there having a pissing contest with a child.

Battlefield always has had it's share of douches, but it seems to do better than CoD in general. Makes a big difference for me. Teamplayers make me a happy chappy.

Many posts seem to be about Multiplayer games, and that makes sense in a lot of ways. Modern day console fanboys use their multiplayer games as ammo in arguments and it goes to show their fanisms for the game over the genre where they bash anyone who thinks, plays, or acts differently then they do can destroy all fun within a 20 mile radius.

But let's talk about something that effects me and is the fault of the designers making mistakes and looking for the fans for input. May be of no surprise that the series I speak of is Sonic.

I am still a Sonic fan though the edge I was so enamored by has changed, presumably focusing on a new breed of edgy kids, which is understandable as time marches on. Recently though, after a few years of weird story choices and flawed programming that you'd expect from a company that releases a new Sonic game every year, they've turned to the fans for input and that was the worst thing they could of done.

Fans are stupid; If you're a fan of a medium or of a genre you're a bit more savvy on the subject, but fans of single titles or series usually do not make for the best of people to turn to for fan advice; same for those who fall from outside the game's facilities. They just don't know what they're a fan of, so they have no way of acknowledging what made it good in the first place and can wholesomely screw things up if giving any bit of control over the subject matter. FPS games like CoD and Halo are mainly populated not by fans of the FPS genre but of only the game for various other reasons (gunplay, competition, visual flair) and thus tend to care less about the community and more about venting or relieving stress; or in some cases, an excuse to be a total douche. These are not universal truths, just observations.

Back to asking fans for design help, there is only a small fraction of them who actually know or have good taste in design, character, story, Et Cetera. So when you ask your fans how you should make your game it's pretty much the same as asking Joe the Plumber to design it.

Kids are even worse because unless they're a prodigy the best they can suggest is the impossible, the stupid, or the fan fiction territory. So when you break it down, only a small percentage of your fans can actually help a series grow; the other majority is ether fueled by an untrained perspective on what's good or fueled by solely Nostalgia wanting nothing but what they had as a kid not realizing that what they are wishing for will never happen simple because they've grown and wont have the same response to the game as they did as a child.

Things other Sonic fans have ruined for me was the ability to play other characters; something they have no problem with in Sonic 2, 3, & Knuckles but have had a problem with ever since SA2. Not to mention younger fans that are the reason designers of the games have forgotten who they're designing for and has made the stories of the games a complete mess; Hint:

I don't know if anyone has said this already, because i'm too lazy to read every single post on this thread, the original Portal.
The cake joke was funny at first, but i still know people who make that joke at every opportunity and still think its funny. It has almost ruined the game for me.

Any Moba game (DOTA, League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth) seems to draw this hyper-competitive fanbase. I really couldn't keep playing League of Legends for it's shitty community. It's scary to imagine that DOTA and HoN are worse.

I call bullshit. Multiplayer games can and are ruined by the people you play them with. DotA is exceptionally newbie unfriendly and the community almost prides itself on treating them like shit. Similarly, people who don't play like a team in Battlefield get curbstomped by enemies that do, so while your doing teamwork shit like healing and guarding flags, the ten snipers are making the game a waste of time as you have no hope of victory.

There is a difference between letting someone's behaviour get to you and people who are being complete dicks and sucking the fun out of the game for others. A noisy kid on the mic is the latter. A kid grabbing the flag and purposfully running around like a headless chicken for no reason is the former.

Have fans ever ruined a game for me? No, not really; unlike a lot of people I know, I'm not going to just stop enjoying something because other fans are dicks/weeaboos. That does not mean, however, that I have never been embarrassed to admit to liking a game/movie/whatever fans might be into, as a result of a rabid fan-base. Allow me to explain:

I love zombies. I love Vampires. I love Family Guy. I love Final Fantasy VII. I love The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I love Halo 2 (specifically 2, don't really enjoy any of the others). Call of Duty: The Next One is generally a good time.

All of the things I have mentioned have had the chance to be ruined by their fans, for various reasons. Zombies, for example, have always been a favorite of mine... imagine my disappointment when they turn out to be some fan-boy wet dream. Vampires were nearly ruined by Twilight and it's ilk, and even before Twilight, there were the "vamp fags", yound people, mostly girls and gay dudes, who hung out at special clubs pretending to be vampires. Not ever LARP... just... why? Family Guy and Final Fantasy both have annoying fans, and when people think of Rocky Horror, they tend to think of hordes of men dressed as whorish women for novelty. Halo and Call of Duty need no explanation.

Still love it all, though. Why would I let a bunch of strangers decide what I should like?

The playerbase ruined WoW for me. Antisocial jerks wherever you went.
This. This is exactly why I hope no game ever kills WoW. We don't need those assholes invading TOR or GW2.
