I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet, but
GTA IV.

I expected a better looking GTA 3: San Andreas/Vice City.

- Less "fun", i.e. purple dildos, Samuel L. Jackson etc.
- All vehicles handled like shit, i.e more realistic (because fun is lame)
- Fuck that mobile phone, I wish I could smash it!
And that doesn't even sum up half of the things Rockstar did wrong with that game.

But knowing me, I'll probably buy GTA V on release and become disappointed yet again.

Better all-round, but the grinding got to me pretty quickly, plus I didn't get on with the influence mechanic.

Mass Effect 2. Although many consider me a heathen of the video gaming world for disliking it I had heard great opinion on it, from virtually everyone. To be fair I accept that I haven't really given it a chance, but the hype has definitely given me a bad introduction to the series

Oh, come on, that was fucking awesome! Even if only a few levels have gigantic siege fights and enourmous 100vs100 fights, they can't be all that there is. If you only eat pistachio all your life, you will grow sick of it. For me, the scarcity of gigantic siege battles (5 in total) is what made the game great, because I enjoyed every single second of them. And almost every part of the game has an allied army of some sort.

This. I pretty much gave up on Final Fantasy after playing XIII. XII was refreshing for me even if the characters and story were particularily bland. It had a great combat system, a wide open world and many things to do on the side. It also had CITIES! With MERCHANTS and PEOPLE to talk to!

In FFXIII, i caught myself hoping my characters would finally die or turn into monsters so that another badass group could take place and get the party started, ditching Cocoon and flying to another universe full of cities, dungeons and landscapes in which they could move in any cardinal direction, find treasure that's not just floating 10 feet off the road and save a world worth saving.

Final Fantasy XIII. Really I shouldn't have been surprised. XII was a total disappointment, but I was going to give it a second chance, the shadow of the doubt. I shouldn't have.

Dead Island. Thought it'd be a good zombie game. Rented it, played it for a few hours for one day, and then returned it that day.

Soul Calibur V. All the reviews said it was good fighting game. It wasn't.

That's why I got really careful. Like paranoid careful.

But in my defence, I honestly thought it was the last of the series, and since I liked Halo 1... *shrug* Might as well see it through.

Well, it is one of those games with an exceptionally narrow nieche-appeal... Still, it's nice to see people trying out new things, even if it turns out to not be their thing.

Oh, we have a bit of a misunderstanding here. I'm talking about the 2001 Peter Molyneux game Black & White, not the Pokemon editions. I kinda lost interest in Pokemon after Gold and Silver for the original Gameboy, I believe. I loved the idea of being able to visit the regions of the first game and going through all of the old gyms again. I was kinda disappointed that that wasn't a tradition kept in the following titles.

Yeah, XIII was a massive disappointment for me as well. Though most people would call me a heretic for saying so, I loved XII for its massive, open world, unique combat/leveling system, decent story and large cities with tons of NPCs.

Then I got XIII and... ugh. I've said a lot of things about the game on these very forums, so I won't really go into repeating them for the sake of keeping this post from becoming a massive rant.

As for XIII-2, it doesn't fix every issue that XIII had (for instance, the levels themselves are still fairly small, confined, and corridor-like), but for whatever it's worth, it feels a little tiny bit more like a Final Fantasy game than XIII did.

I'll second this as well (Minus the Peter Molyneux's Black And White, because I was just a young'un when I played it so I actually enjoyed it). I've begrudgingly followed the Pokemon series ever since Red/Blue came out over here in the states, and I've got to say it makes me incredibly sad that Gold/Silver and their remakes are still the only games in the entire franchise to explore multiple regions.

Boom Blox: Bash Party. From everything I read, I expected basically more of the same from Boom Blox, but with a few new features and new level themes.

I didn't expect it to be such a worse game, in so many ways. It almost blew my mind how terrible it was compared to the first one. The rhyming storylines dripping with simple humor and charm? Gone. The linear structure was replaced by an open-ended structure that worked poorly, but at least allowed you to choose which bland, boring level to play next.

The only thing that this lame excuse for a sequel did right was the multiplayer component, which admittedly was very lacking in the original game. In fact, Bash Party's multiplayer options are pretty darn good. It's a shame the core game is nothing more than a slap in the face to one of the greatest Wii titles of all time.

Mafia II. Only warning I got was from some reviewers on Gamefaqs. That was it. See, all of the reviews were good, some of my friends said I should play it, and even the people of GTAforums kept asking over and over for features imported from mafia II. So I found it in a best buy bargain bin for $20.

I still feel ripped off. Chapter 3 has me lifting crates, chapter 6 has me cleaning prison toilets, chapter 7 has me chaperoning drunk guys around with no control over my radio, chapter 8 has me color matching cigarettes to customers, and the shootouts are something you could easily find in gears of war. And when you're not doing all of that, you're usually sitting in traffic. Wow. It's an okay linear game, but the problem is that even though people acknowledge the automatic GPS waypoint you get, they still called it a fucking sandbox game.

To top it all off, the story is half heartedly ripped from godfather. Hell, the main character's first name is Vito. They only changed his last name. And another character? His name is Henry Tomasino. You know, like Don Tomasino in the godfather? I mean, they didn't even try. The whole story is basically a bunch of mafia families are having feuds and you want to make money, so you do their errands. I'm not sure if that goes on through the whole game, though, because I just stopped playing at the point in a chapter where it said I have to go back to Derek to earn more money because a drug deal went wrong and I'm in debt. For about the 5th time in the game. Fuck that.

Epic Mickey. From the reviews, I took it to be on the same caliber as Okami. Should have known better, it's made by EA so I should have expected it to be half-assed. It's just a platformer, not an adventure game. The overhyped morals system doesn't actually have noticeable effects. The reviews failed to mention that you can't backtrack and there's no final boss.

The marketing made it look cool and hyped the fact that when you push storm troopers off things they try to grab onto things as a big 'cool' feature.
Turned out it sucked.
