Marcus Fenix looks too...lumpy. Always avoided Gears of War because of that.
I agree, if a game protagonist is absurdly muscular I pretty much instantly lose interest.

No, and I honestly have quite a hard time to belive that some people actually do this...

But, everyone has weird quirks so I guess its fair enough.
I can see your point, but I disagree. The difference to me is that, as far as I am concerned, my character in a game is a digital representation of myself. I like to play as characters I can relate strongly with, and recently that means I am only playing games where my character is fully customisable. I can see the appeal of a good story about an interesting character, but for me unless the character is me I tend to lose interest.

There have been exceptions to this rule recently. For example last year I replayed Oblivion as a female, Dark Elf, Vampire former prostitute for a spot of role-play, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Kratos God Of War 3 - I cannot support this character. Oh god is he just...the worst most selfish least heroic most terribly written character I have ever come across in a video game. And the idea that people think this is what a lot of people think a game protagonist should be ...uuugh >.<

Duke Nukem (Forever) - I was all onboard thinking, come on guys the game may not be as great as we hoped but we get to play as the Duke again. Then I saw the "I guess you're, fucked heheheh" scene and yep. Turned me off of that game like that.
I agree. That is another reason I can't stand Manky Fenix, he's so depressed and angry all the time that I have no sympathy for his plight. If people like him are all that's left then I support the lizard men. Hurry up and wipe out the miserable pricks.

God of War looks as though it has superb gameplay and combat, but I just can't get behind the idea of controlling Kratos, probably one of the most repulsive, selfish, short-sighted, and unsympathetic characters ever. At least in God of War 1 he had some sympathetic qualities in the back-story, and the bad guy was way more evil than him, but from what I understand all of that is thrown out the window as the series goes on. I heard a synopsis of the 2nd and 3rd games, and I couldn't help but feel that Zeus and the other gods were completely and totally justified in all of the oh-so-terrible things that Kratos wants revenge for (like trying to stop him from constantly murdering things).

I think that him being generally horrible was intentional of the creator's part, but I just can't get behind it.

What ever the next Halo game is.

Even though I have faith in 343, with spoiler: Cortana dead I just don't want to listen to Steve Downs try to carry a whole game by himself.

It's scientifically proven that listening to his voice is the leading cause of ear cancer in gamers.

If they make another Kane and Lynch game, I may pass because the two lead characters have absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever. They aren't even anti-heroes, they're just a couple of scumbags.

I almost didn't get Final Fantasy XII because I'm not a huge fan of Vaan; he's like the little kid who follows the adults in this grand fantasy adventure. There's nothing interesting about him and I wasn't sure if I could stand to play with him around. Luckily, all the other characters in your party are awesome and interesting, as well as their abilities and skills are interchangeable so yeah, it all worked out in the end.

I'm more worried about David Cage than I am about Ellen Paige. He's not a good writer, which is bad when the whole crux of your game is the story. Also, there's a female protagonist, so I'm not looking forward to seeing what creepy, fetishistic, rape culture situations he forces her into. Honestly, Heavy Rain wanted to make me vomit. He needs some professional writers to help him not suck. I am grateful he's had an influence on other, better, developers, especially adventure game developers. Tell Tale games was influenced by him, despite the fact that the are far superior to him in every way.
I may sound biased, but what exactly was wrong with Heavy Rain's writing / storyline / its structure? Is it some of the forced violence / sex object scenes or flat characterization?

RPGs that let you customize your character's appearance, but you can only play as a male. >_> Any of the newer final fantasy games. I played the tenth, and that's enough for me. I also tend to favour any game that has a female protagonist, like tomb raider, bayonetta and similar. I haven't gotten around to trying Remember Me yet, but I was kind of looking forward to it, until it didn't get the greatest reviews.

What? I've heard all manner of people saying all manner of stuff about Mass Effect, but I seriously don't think you played the same thing everyone else played. The wasn't even a scientist in it until the second one... And the main character was one you created yourself and could decide the personality of(to an extent), so... You created a character you didn't like?

Confused.com.
Mass Effect : Infiltrator is an IOS game, i loved the actual games but the story of infiltrator is just too stupid.

I like Heavy Rain as an idea, but it was poorly executed, and there are many plot holes. Why does Ethan have blackouts at the beginning of the game, and then wake up with origami figures? I know it's a red herring to mislead the audience, but it still needs an explanation. In reality there was an explanation, but it was removed from the game because the developers realized it didn't make any sense. As a result a huge plot hole remained. Why does Scott Shelby think about capturing the killer, when he is the killer? It would make sense for him to lie to other characters when he's talking, but it makes no sense for him to lie himself. He only thinks that way to mislead the audience, but it still doesn't make rational sense. His motivations change as well. If the main character arrives to save Shaun, and the other characters aren't there, Shelby lets him go. However, if the other characters do arrive, then Shelby tries to kill the main character in order to create an elaborate chase sequence.

As for female characters, Heavy Rain just felt creepy. At one point I was forced to strip the female character down at gunpoint while porno sounding music played. If the player messes up, then he forces you to strip her at gunpoint, and there's no choice in the matter. Every encounter Madison has ends up like this, what with a creepy doctor tying her to a table, or a creepy hotel manager who stares at her. It got weird fast, and I felt like most of it existed for fan service. The Last of Us handled a similar situation with Ellie very well, where the villain in question was demented, and Ellie was obviously traumatized by the experience. Heavy Rain, on the other hand, seemed to have a sick enjoyment of those scenes, and that's what turned me of. People hate on Trope Against Women, but sometimes I think those videos make a really good point. It's kind of like Sucker Punch, in that it tried to fetishize women while simultaneously "empowering" them. You can't have your cake and eat it too, and as a result the game simply felt insincere.

I like that David Cage wants to make story based games, and I didn't even mind the quick time prompts. Again, The Walking Dead was very similar, and I loved it. It's just that David Cage is not a fantastic writer, and sometimes his ambition surpasses his actual skill. I'll withhold judgment on Beyond Two Souls, but I highly doubt it will be the masterpiece "interactive drama experience" that David Cage is striving for.

God of War...Kratos isn't even a good anti-hero anymore.

He wouldn't even make a sensible villain at this point...he's just a vindictive, blind jackass...

Oddly enough, new Dante didn't actually piss me off, it's just that the game WASN'T DmC (I didn't mind it as much as I thought I would).

I'll note that I DID play both, just to get it out of my system, but I'll never touch these games ever again.

I would have to say Dragon Age 2. I know I keep bashing the game, but the truth was I really couldn't identify with Hawke up intil a quarter of the way through. I dunno, it just felt rather wierd, especially when I was forced to make certain decisions and I couldn't do what I wanted specifically - which hurt somewhat because I tend to play games 'as myself', if you know what I mean.

Otherwise, I'd have to say that I won't buy or play FarCry 3 because of the protagonist.

I fucking hate the protagonist in Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Dragon Age Origins. There are more, but I'm not gonna list them here. They're always so annoying and full of shit. And they talk too much, they think they're funny when they're not and they're ugly.
Wut.

Seriously, that makes no sense. Zero sense made. In Fallout and the Elder Scrolls you are the one -making- the character. You can't craft a character who doesn't annoy you? o_O

Uncharted. It's like Yahtzee said - Drakes' a friggin' psycho.
The first one or the second one.
I agree on the second one. I didn't care about what my guy was doing and the world didn't seemed to care either. In Origins it was pretty much the opposite. People congratulate me when i helped them. When you do do the defence of that down particulary well, without anyone dying, then there's even a big speech talking about how great you are.

Subtle self loathing joke. Maybe a little TOO subtle... Sorry. I do that, make jokes that only make sense in my head.

He's joking, because all those character's are
1. pretty much you, because you choose who they are and
2. because all of those are silent protagonists.

I suspect he was trying to make a funny.

On topic: I haven't encountered a game yet(or atleast remember one) that I couldn't keep on playing because I disliked the main character. I do remember hating every moment in Modern Warfare 2(?) with the guy that had a skull mask.. I don't even remember his name because he was clearly only there to be a guy with a skull mask. I laughed when he died.
That and every main character in that game got worse with every installment.

The Batman Arkham games.

I played them, but Batman himself is easily the least enjoyable aspect of them.

Try cracking a fucking smile once in a while you miserable, joyless, gormless, constipated, uninteresting, zero-dimensional prat.
Yes! Agree! He's such an ass... Never a thank-you, always ignore people who wants to help him, shrug them off with his "I could have handled it". No character development at all throughout the two games.
Batman, as an overall character, is fantastic. Batman in the Arkham Games, on the other hand, is pretty 1-dimensional.

The Witcher 2

I tried playing Witcher 1, but I just couldn't stand Geralt(or whatever his name is), he just feels so much like a complete Mary Sue to me.
