Eh, didn't really laugh at any of his his material, but I can see why other people did.

His rants where entertaining, though.

I liked quite a lot of his comedy and his style but after a while I found some of his rants werent that funny and dragged a bit. I think the stuff from the 70's 80's that I have seen was much better.

Still can't fault him in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure or Dogma.

A great comedian. I think I first saw one of his stand ups when I was eight and he is still my all time favorite comedian. I recently watched his opening for SNL back in the 70's; its absolute gold.

I don't see why some people are taking him seriously. He was a comedian. His stock and trade was to satirize the issues of the day and spew out of absurd,non-PC statements for the amusement of the audience. He knew that. That was the point. It was why he was funny back in the day. If you seriously try to apply half of the stuff he says seriously (whether for or against)....well, then the jokes on YOU isn't it?

Personally I thought he was a bit of an opinionated dick, but that's just me. Most of his routines came across as mindless rantings about things he was clearly ignorant about (religion, politics, environmentalism, etc etc etc).
would love you to send me a link to any vid where George Carlin was 'ignorant' about any of the three topics you mentioned, because I've watched a lot of comedians and I would say he's the least ignorant I've ever encountered, stubborn yes, but ignorant, no way
Look at the post which is three posts above yours. Or the video which was posted yesterday [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.191055.5973875].

I know he was amazingly opinionated, but it would be nice if he actually had some kind of rational justification for his edicts. The liberal equivalent of Sean Hannity (making shit up to smear people who think differently) was the last thing those of us trying to get liberalism and socialism taken seriously needed.
Nothing in the religion video was "ignorant." I'm not suprised you can't cite anything specific. Religion tells people there's an invisible man in the sky who grants wishes, despite not having a shred of evidence, and people believe it. That is definitely worth making fun of, sorry to break it to you, but the fairy tales your parents spoonfed to you as a child aren't real.

George Carlin is the greatest comedian of all time.

I was lucky enough to catch his very last tour while he was coming through Michigan. You never really know what it's like to see him perform until you see him live. Good grief, his facial expressions; even the most macabre subject is disarmingly hilarious with the kind of expressions he made. He was a class clown 'til the end.

I'm sure he'd roll in his grave if he heard me say this, or at least criticize my awkward turns of phrase in his grave, but God bless George Carlin.

Well, once again, you seem to prove that you are either a twin or a clone of me.
I think I'm just your lost brother, not sure
That's got to be it. I was thinking you were somehow my twin with messed around birth records.
*looks at birthday*

Being insanely funny requires being a bit of a dick.

A really funny guy. Over the top, sure, but got me laughing.

So its been around 2 years since the legend died. I am still of the mind that he was, is, and always will be the greatest comedian of all time.
but what did you think of him?
Great comedian, not as good as Lenny Bruce when it comes to fighting for the 1st Amendment.

You only think he was ignorant on the topic because his comedic exaggerations don't follow your beliefs on the the subjects, same as you do with everyone else. I'm going to go with him being just a hair more informed about American politics than you since he was subpoenaed several times by Congress and forced to testify before them (on the topics of obscene speech and censorship.)

His amount of material is astounding, how many comedians can be relevant for decades? I can get why he'd polarise people, but I always admired Carlin's contributions.

I feel the same way about the man. His rants, though often misinformed or just plain ignorant, are still fucking hilarious.
And I love the prison state idea.
Ah, Bob, we agree again. Truly this is a fortuitous acquaintanceship!

He's one of my favourite comedians, because his entire routine is basically "The world is a pretty fucked up place, let's laugh about it."
