He was a man of my own heart.

I find it ironic that he mentions the sun. I have a theory that the sun IS God, since all major religions can trace their routes to the most basic of religions, the worship of the sun. And it kind of makes sense in both spiritual and scientific sense, since the sun is undisputably the most powerful entity in our solar system.

Anyway, I find some of his stuff funny, although I do not take his views seriously. Also, some of his comedy is too crude for my liking, beacuse I do not think profanity is a necessary component of comedy. But I respect that that was simply his style and that he would not have been as good of a comedian without it.
Sorry to burst your bubble mate but the sun is just a star surrounded by stars, a relatively small star compared to others, see for yourself.

I know. That is why I said it was the most powerful entity in our solar system.
Yes but you said you have a theory that the sun is god, god is supposedly in charge of the universe last I checked?
Yes, supposedly. But when all these religions were born, did anyone really know that there was a whole universe outside our world? Heck, the Bible states that God put all those stars up in one day, which would mean that he created the rest of the universe in a single day. If that is the case, why did it take him 5 more days to create Earth? Is Earth really the only planet in the universe that can support life?

Besides, I never said that the theory fits all religious beliefs and theories. Afterall, a lot of those beliefs and theories were made under the impression that God was a person....a he or a she, not an it. So of course you could find many things that do not fit. For example, the Ten Commandments. How could the sun state those if it cannot talk....or have a will for that matter?

The main point I was trying to make is that since many comparisons can be drawn between all major religions and the basic worship of the sun, almost all gods were very likely created as a consenquence of the worship of the sun. So if the worship of God stems from the worship of the sun, that makes the sun, in a sense, God. But that is not saying much, since you could say that the sun is Allah/Zeus/Ra/Jupiter/Apollo or whatever other god you can think of.

Of course, you are free to disagree with me. Afterall, it is just a theory.
I like to think of the sun as a combination of hydrogen, helium, iron, oxygen, carbon and neon, but hey to each his own... at least your theory is more fun than mine

Its also very bright apparently
It is a combination of hydrogen, helium, iron, oxygen, carbon and neon. You are misunderstanding me. I do not worship the sun or God. I do not think of either as deities. Infact, I am not religious in general. It is just my theory how the concept of God came to be, that is all.

I still miss the guy, his comedy was easily one of a kind and usually better than most others. His rants were epic!

Unfortunately he died only weeks before he would have performed in my city. I was going to buy tickets. =(

OHH well in that case I see where your coming from, it is true that the ancient mayans believed the moon would fight off the sun every day and that they believed they were both gods, glad we cleared that up :-D

Ditto. Just don't find the guy remotely amusing. He always came across as one of those ignorant loudmouths you can't help but overhear on public transport.

There will never be such a thing as the greatest comedian ever. There will, however, be a sub-section of comedy reserved for "The Greats". George Carlin is one. Robin Williams is another. And there are numerous other illustrious names that will live forever, but nobody should ever try to have them competing...unless you're opening up a new season of Celebrity Deathmatch.

He was a bit of a dick, but he was insanely funny.
Being insanely funny requires being a bit of a dick.

A really funny guy. Over the top, sure, but got me laughing.
Naah not at all.
Now don't go throwing around "ur stoopid, durr" in a cleverly disguised fluent sentence like this one: "It could be that British humour is a little too sophisticated for his tastes." You, clearly an intelligent person, of all people, should know that liking one thing or finding it amusing does not necessarily exclude liking other things.

But allow me to rephrase what I said there, just to avoid any future misunderstandings:
George Carlin was an amusing stand up comedian because of his style of "being a dick" and insulting pretty much everything and everyone. This doesn't work the other way, just being a dick won't make anyone funny. He wasn't especially smart with his material, repeating worn phrases about atheism and profanities along with circular logic. Remember, sometimes it's not always about what you say, but how you say it that matters. In Carlin's case, he was funny because of that.

Not my favourite, though. That would be no other than Jimmy Carr. Mostly because of the quality of his live material and indeed, presentation. Cambridge style. Oh right.

Also, isn't everyone entitled to a personal opinion? Your dislike of Carlin almost blinds you here, it seems to me you are in your mind framing everyone who enjoyed his stand up to be a mindless drone and an unquestioning disciple of Carlin's narrow minded views. Because your opinions are clearly superior and somehow more "right".

would love you to send me a link to any vid where George Carlin was 'ignorant' about any of the three topics you mentioned, because I've watched a lot of comedians and I would say he's the least ignorant I've ever encountered, stubborn yes, but ignorant, no way
Look at the post which is three posts above yours. Or the video which was posted yesterday [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.191055.5973875].

I know he was amazingly opinionated, but it would be nice if he actually had some kind of rational justification for his edicts. The liberal equivalent of Sean Hannity (making shit up to smear people who think differently) was the last thing those of us trying to get liberalism and socialism taken seriously needed.
Nothing in the religion video was "ignorant." I'm not suprised you can't cite anything specific. Religion tells people there's an invisible man in the sky who grants wishes, despite not having a shred of evidence, and people believe it. That is definitely worth making fun of, sorry to break it to you, but the fairy tales your parents spoonfed to you as a child aren't real.

George Carlin is the greatest comedian of all time.
When I read this, it really made me think of a quote of Stephen Colbert's that really can apply to a large number of people here at the escapist that describes most, if not all, of the atheists I have ever met:
"Atheism: the religion devoted to the worship of one's own smug sense of superiority."

I have no idea.

I am guessing you live in the UK. Personally I don't find much good on comedy central compared to Dave. South Park is great, but the rest of it I think is a bit crappy such as Two and a half men, The US version of The Office (compare it to the UK version), Scrubs (compare to The Green Wing), etc. Dave is far more entertaining on the whole.
None of those programs besides South Park are on Comedy Central, think there's some confusion here.

Anyways, I like a great deal from both nations when it comes to comedy (and yes, I liked both Offices, sadly US version has run past its prime, this kills many shows in US).

If you want what I consider the pinnacle of US comedy, watch "Arrested Development". I adore that show and it makes me laugh after a dozen viewings. I just say this, watch episode 1 first and on 2, 3, 4 etc. Do not pick a random episode, it will make no sense if you do.

Now, please suggest what you consider pinnacle of English humour. Have a nice day.

I love Colbert, he's my favorite late night US personality and this shows why. Even when he pokes fun at something I am or like, I applaud the amusing creativity. I can take a joke, especially well constructed and delivered. Bravo Stephen.

I didn't always agree with him, but I often laughed at his rants.

You could always trust him to point out the absurdities in every day life. Funny man.

As a huge fan of sarcasm/sardonicism, bitter cynicism, and black humor, I deeply enjoyed his comedy, and discovered his work the summer he died, about two months before it. Good stuff, good, good stuff. Shame he died, but maybe the Flying Noodle Monster touched him with his noodly appendage. My money's on his spirit still being stuck on a roof somewhere..

he was pretty much one of the best observational comedians of all time. his work is really relevant to a lot of stuff, and it's affected me and the way i live hugely.
