The Maquis aren't terrorists! They're fighting for the freedom of Federation colonists!

By the way, why are there a Klingon skull and weapons? The Maquis fought the Cardassians, not the Klingons as far as I'm aware!

Apparently the guy who designed the logo is the same guy who plans their missions.

LEADER: "Okay, men. We've seized some highly unstable experimental Starfleet technology to travel in time. Unfortunately, it will only work ONCE before every console connected to it explodes. We're going to use it to send you back in time and kill THIS human on pre-Federation Earth." (Brings up Osama picture.)

SOLDIER 1: "So who is this guy? Some philosopher whose teachings made key Starfleet personnel more willing to deal with the Cardies?"

LEADER: "Nope."

SOLDIER 2: "Some politician who helped create the Federation?"

LEADER: "What? No! That'd be crazy."

SOLDIER 3: "Some inventor who invented something... that...."

LEADER: "No, no, no! Are you morons? It's obvious! He's the figurehead of one faction in a war on a heavily balkanized Earth that ultimately will have no major influence on the future Starfleet!"

SOLDIERS: "Huh?"

LEADER: "AND KILL SOME KLINGONS WHILE YOU'RE THERE! IT TOOK ME ALL WEEK TO MAKE THESE PATCHES! WE MUST MAKE THE GERMANS FEAR US!"

SOLDIER 2: "Where's the planet German?"

Hehe, spellchecker wanted to replace "balkanized" with "vulcanized".

Just to clarify: None of us Germans actually believe this. It is still hilarious, though.

I suppose it befalls me to be that Star Trek nerd who just has to cry NON-CANON and be a ***** about it XD

The Maquis Special Operations is actually part of a FAN COMMUNITY (Maquis Forces International) dedicated to the 'Maquis' in Star Trek, introduced in DS9 as a prequel of sorts to set up the pilot of Voyager. There's no mention of any Maquis Seals in the TV series (or other canon material), so it's not even official Star Trek.

Can you really be that bad at using google? At least you shouldn't be calling yourself a journalist if you are, not even checking the top-level of the domain .....

I mean, check out their web site, it's not like you could mistake this for a US Govt. site!!

http://wiki.maquis.com/w/Main_Page

It even has a disclaimer "These are Star Trek fan pages."

EPIC LULZ!

I did say in the last bit that it was fan-made.

Ah, sorry, that wasn't directed at you Mr Funk, but rather an attempt to educate the non-trekkie masses (wrt the previous comments) and have a jab at the German newscaster.

Am I the only one bothered that the Maquis were actually about resisting the Cardassians, not the Klingons?
No, I was wondering the same thing. From what I remember, the Maquis was founded by that group of Native Americans that Picard had to relocate thanks to a treaty with the Cardassians, and they had a bunch of Bajorans join later on. For crying out loud, B'elanna Torres was half Klingon, and she was most definitely a member of the Maquis, not someone they were trying to kill. The only way I see Klingons playing into this is as a minority of the membership, although terrorism isn't exactly the Klingon way, unless you're talking about the kind of "Terrorism" practiced by the rulers of the Ancient Akkadians.

Now that my daily trekkie rant is out of the way, I have to say that this was a hilarious mistake. What is it with the Bin Laden story and major image fails? First that Pakistani news network manages to mistake a photoshopped picture of Bin Laden -- which was a known fake and had been circulating the internet for years -- for the real deal, and now a German station puts up a Star Trek picture as something from real life. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Edit: I've figured it out. The "Maquis Forces International" part of the emblem is actually the name of the Star Trek fanclub that made the images. The picture was supposed to be for a 24th century version of the real SEAL Team VI.

Yes, Seal Team VI is even a local branch of the fanclub, if I've understood it correctly. They do some kind of RPGesque thing on their forums; you can click the "real life" link on the bottom of the pages with member info and get some info on the actual people "playing" the characters.

They also already have t-shirts in the making:

This isn't nearly far-fetched enough... I thought for sure a wormhole was ripped in the fabric of existence allowing our alternate selves from our alternate universe slip in and capture the terrorist. You're saying that all they used was a time machine? Pfft. A small calibration to one's microwave could make this possible. Now to travel a black hole through time and reality itself is a whole different matter. Literally, matter.

Massive fail...
But hey, it´s german mass media, it is made of fail.
They probably tasked some low-payed rookie to google the logo of the SEAL Team Six and he turned up with that...german news networks, who are slow on actually researching their facts, just took it for granted.
BILD newspaper posted what looked like a SEAL in frogman suit with a SIG 552 rifle and wrote: "SEAL Member with M4A1."
They also call Predator Drones "Killer Rockets"...despite them being primarily not rockets, and not armed reconissance. They only started carrying Hellfires when they suspected to be needed too.
They also print "witness records" where one witness in court said that a recent school shooter did it "like in Counterstrike, aiming for the head because it gets you more points."...not to mention that every biopsy conducted the fire was actually relatively center mass, and he needed about 2-3 bullets for each target. Yeah...like a pro. This blatant LIE is actually unlawful itself in court, even when not sworn in.

Yeah, germany. They fuck up alot.
But most News stations get hillarious mishaps some times where you ask yourself "how could they?"...but yeah, it happens.
