You're not exactly special in that regard. My parents lived in Germany for awhile before I was born and later told me similar things about the way Germans talked about "the Americans". I've seen comments from people from many different countries talking about "the Germans", "the Aussies", "the Swedes", "the Japanese"- you name it.
