Though I don't agree with the mocking another culture, there is a serious issue here. Isn't Japan the country where there are major worries about the birth rate. Not saying there is a causal link here, but you do wonder....
I think that has a lot more to do with a country where owning a home big enough to raise a family is extremely expensive.
Japan already has one of the highest population densities in the world so hardly a huge issue if their birth rate is dropping.

To concede that games or any media should not be available due to it's effect on the fringe of society is and always has been a terrible argument.
Woah, woah. Not even trying to make the argument that these games should not be available. Just having some fun with coincidences.

OK, just hard to tell the difference when terms like "Serious Issue" are used, people assume their culture as the default and believe deviation to be perversion, especially in age of consent, now i'm NOT claiming that any country is RIGHT, but if Japan claims 13 years old is the correct age who are we to judge? there is no moral absolute! so their idolisation of the age of consent is identical to americas love of 18 year old girls (their age of consent) an interesting coincidence?

Now hold the phone! Let me get this straight.

You mean that I get to pay real money every month to have a fake girl tell me all the inane details of her day? And that I don't even have to go through all the hassle of having sex with her? Where do I sign up?!?!?!?!?!?!

Can't wait for the update where she lets you know the baby isn't yours or that she made out with your dad. Then you've got all the important parts of the girlfriend experience.

This isn't really a cultural issue, though. These games are still kind of niche in Japan (though the nonsexual ones are more popular, probably due to less stigma and greater opportunity for distribution), and you'll find the really mainstream opinion is sort of what's expressed here: that this is kind of sad.

Mostly, it's mocking some gamers' tastes and applying them to a whole country that's the issue.

If there's anything to that argument at all, it would be the other way around, that these games are popular as a consequence of the issues causing the falling birthrate (land issues and population density, a third decade of economic doldrums, residual issues caused by the previous economic structure, low sex rate and low levels of satisfaction in parenthood, etc.).

Of course, those other things are nigh-universal, while this is a game genre popular among a certain subset of nerds, so there's that.

Actually, the most common age of consent in Japan is 18. National law places it at 13, but most prefectures bump it up to the higher age.

Showing off your waifu to friends is such a social activity~. WOAH GAIS, CHECK OUT MAI WAIFU. WOAH, LOOK AT THAT WAIFU GO. Now where's my hasubando game equivalent?

Also, $4 per month is a severe rip-off. I mean, I'm sure it's worth it for those who are addicted to it and the fictional characters they love. But for the amount of content they have to provide to make $4 per month is ridiculously low. There are no pay to play MMORPGs that even slightly resemble that low of content. I mean, for about half of the price of some MMORPGs, you get about 1/100,000th of the content. Good grief.
when you consider you can game completely legitimately for free, the whole price issue is kinda up in the air you can pay what you want for the experience you want

@1:20 is that guy trying to get an up-skirt peek. Classy. Very realistic dating simulator, as in real life that would get you a date ending slap.
Depends.. i know some women that would like that but i agree, it's not exactly mainstream ^^

Unfortunately, they are 'real' enough that getting to any more than a few bases with your 'wifu' will get you a sex offence conviction in quite a few jurisdictions, now. Not really helping in stopping the line between reality and not reality from getting blurred and playing into the delusions of the people who are obsessed with this type of game.

The email service is just pretty sad.
if it's a sex offence is it even legal to own in the first place?
and if so that's just downright confusing

I've never played (or owned) a dating sim, so don't take this as the voice (words) of an angry fan, but... what the hell, guys? Since when was it okay to openly insult and talk down to an entire group of people here? Fairly certain some of these comments and even the OP itself would count as trolling in any other topic.

Let's get off our high-horses and stop blatantly insulting the fanbase for a product we might not like, eh?

Shameful.

This. It's especially disappointing, that this is coming from GAMERS, who have to deal with exactly the same kind of bullshit from mainstream media, with all the "murder simulators", implications that we are replacing real lifes with virtual ones, and being creepy nolifers.

Seriously, how many of you are watching porn? How is THAT diferent?

Oh, yeah, because that's not a game, therefore it's not a crazy realistic mind-controlling tool that is scary because it's new and we don't understand it.

You know guys, reading through the topic I didn't think there would be people like you too who would point it out.

So yeah, I don't understand why people would pay for this but come on guys, surely it's not deserving of such vitriol.

Wait, wha?! What has age if consent stuff got to do with this? The serious issue was the falling birth rate. My comment was regarding virtual vs real girlfriends, nothing to do with the age of those girls friends. Think someone is a bit paranoid about something. Myself, I think it is crazy for age of consent to be relevant to anything that isn't real, simple as....

And of course this is not going to be the reaction of all the girls in the game, rather than just the one 'kinky' character. So no chance of the game perpetrating the idea that it is 'cute' when you try and look up girls skirts.....

Not sure the game contains any depictions of 'sexy time' with your wifu, that would get you in trouble. But I don't know, didn't a Dead or Alive game get pulled from Nordic countries, for similar reasons? Just making the point that even if the most know the characters are not real, a few governments believe they are real enough that depictions of sexy time, with the ages of the characters in the game, is abuse. So that real, not real line is not quite as black and white, as it used to be.

About the same as the coverage as for 'Gal-gun' a 'rail shooter' where you shoot girls with hearts, rather than going for bloody head shots like in 'Time Crisis'. One is supposedly cool, one is supposedly creepy. Wonder if it had been set in a college rather than a school would have made any difference....

The email thing is a bit sad though. The same way anyone paying to get emails from Mario or the Master Chief would be.

Oh dear Lord. . .

I'm watching the commercial thinking at those two guys "you know what, instead of mooning over your fake anime girlfriend, why don't you try talking to the attractive flesh-and-blood girl who just sat down on the couch next to you". . .

Single as I am, I hope that if I ever get that lonely or desperate I'll still have the presence of mind to commit ritual suicide with a rusty spoon instead.

most girls in Japan never get out of that high school mentality that the guy has to be hot looking to be datable
Which is different from guys, how? o_O

Oh, right. The japanese women won't call the men bitches for rejecting them. That's about it.

I think it's hilarious how guys expect supermodels to want them, but whine when women have equal expectations.

but if Japan claims 13 years old is the correct age
Thankfully, that's not the case. Japan made no such claim.

The reason that there's pressure to lower the rates, if anything, can be traced right back to japanese pedophiles. Japan DOES have an issue with this.

As do other countries that tried it. Germany, for example, had people trying to lower the age to 12, too. Most of those backing that law later turned out to be...? What? Ah, pedophiles.

Just because it's Japan doesn't mean that pedophilia isn't an issue. Japan really has quite an issue with it, so it's expected some would like to circumvent the law to have it easier to rape school children without repercusion. It's hard enough in Japan to actually persecute this stuff as it is.

Why Konami? Why did you fall so low?

I was simply trying to highlight my point that it is very hard to aptly judge a culture when we have an entirely different view of what we consider moral absolutes. I also wanted to point out a coincidence in idolisation of "Barely Legal" girls in both cultures. I was trying to show that while we may judge these games from our cultural standpoint we must concede that we can never truly understand them from their countries perspective.

You expanded on my points nicely.

I guess, despite the painful irony, gamers too have the 'cool guys' and the 'weird nerds'. By and large a lot of us are marginalized and feel... unaccepted, so we form close groups of others that share our interests (the same as every other group) such as this website. What happens? Within that very group of people, some choose to mock, belittle and generally trash others and their sub-interests.

I guarantee if you were to make a topic about the new Call of Duty and fill the op with ad-hominem attacks like how "depressing" and "sad" it is that people are buying it, you would be labeled a troll and hit with the warning stick instantly. Why? Because it's okay to like that series and not this one.

I've lost a lot of respect for this site's staff.
