I agree with this, I will do whatever it takes to get a better internet here with unlimited bandwidth, our telecom companies suck. Save us.

Sincerely,

More of Canada.
Goodness, yes. We used to be one of the better countries for Internet access, but the big telecom stranglehold has allowed us to drop steadily in the ranks because they've done jack to improve connectivity while simultaneously raising prices. And now they're trying for things like throttling and usage-based billing. And then they just out and out lie about how "good" we have it [http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/5626/125/].

Google might be an evil empire, but we've already GOT one of those now. Bring it on, Google. If I've gotta be someone's slave, might as well be for the guys with the best deal going.

Sincerely,

Even more of Canada.

It's sad because pretty much ALL the telecom companies are evil here, they're all seemingly in on this whole screwing the customer over shtick.

But mostly Bell, fuck Bell.

As another one of the unfortunates to live in Canada, I am greatly envious of those bastards down there now.

I am supposed to have 256kb/s, but I can only coax 150kb/s out of my stupid line because "the line connected to my house is too small"

But if I wanted it improved I would have to pay, and and in the town I live, getting 256 is the best i will ever get for the next 20 years. Also, I'm renting the house I live in so paying a D-bag company for a service they should provide regardless isn't worth it.

So until I get out of here I will live with my primitive 24 hour long downloads on Steam games. D:

Gods, yes. Just got the cheque from Telus regarding this fiasco [http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2010/08/31/crtc-deferral-account-phone.html], and were they sorry to see my thirty bucks go. First they sent an ad about how I could "turn it into $100!" just by signing up for more overpriced crap I didn't need. Then they mentioned they could donate it to a children's hospital for me. Don't I want sick kids to be happy? Yeah, that's why I donated to Child's Play on my own terms and not through some megacorp that's desperate for the good press it'll get by giving MY money away.

But the cheque is here and I'm gonna photograph the damn thing before I cash it.

I'm glad I don't have this.

I would need to buy a few more hard drives just because I would download everything and look at the big numbers.

I could easily sum it up with "They are my cell phone service providers" and that would pretty much tell the whole thing but I'll go in to detail.

So three years ago I go in to a plan with them, at the time I was not aware how bad they were. about a year with my new phone and its now a pain in the ass to charge it due to a hardware issue, bell refuses to repair it for free since it has been 6 months since I purchased it, I'd either need to spend more than it would cost to buy a new phone to repair it or get a new phone and be CHARGED FOR BOTH for a few months and then just for the new one. The issue is this is a plan with multiple people and I can't just leave without ruining most of it for the rest of my family who are in this, thankfully it ends this April and I am going to leave Bell and never look back. I have a friend who just switched to Virgin and says it is 100x better service and so that's where I plan to go.

I still have this piece of shit cellphone that broke within the first year, for two years I have been putting up with it charging only when it feels like, it'll be nice to never have to put up with this again.

I should also note: I had an unlimited internet browsing thing as part of the plan, they attempted to charge me for internet browsing one month, and it would have robbed me if I hadn't convinced them it was a mistake and that I had unlimited (which was way more effort to convince them than it needed to be)

so in conclusion: Fuck Bell.

My internet is 1MB/s

For me, this would be like going from the stone-age straight beyond the future into the future future.

Now I also want to move to Kansas City.

Considering Vermont's internet stuff, we'll be getting this in 2020. Maybe, if we're lucky.
1 mb/s?

ouch =\

last night i had to re download steam directly to my C drive with all my games, the peak download rate was at 20 mb/s

well i am about 2-1/2 hours away from kc..might consider moving there JUST for this.

Fuck Rogers as well.

They advertise a download speed of 5mb/s, the most I ever get to is 1, two if I'm extremely lucky.

And I'm plugged in using the best ethernet cable I can get.

It'd be nice if they made sure everyone in the world had the same speed then begin to massively upgrade some places.
[sub]Damn my limited broadband and low download speed >.>[/sub]

Good for the people in Kansas I guess!

Imagine what's possible with a 1 gigabit per second internet connection. You could download an HD movie in 5 minutes, video chat with your entire extended family with no network strain, and watch all the porn.
I imagine that the last bit would become quite the chore eventually [http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/06/this-is-why-ill-never-be-adult.html].

Day 1: WATCH ALL THE PORN!
Day 9: Watch all the porn?

It's times like this I envy Sweden with their 70-100 MB/s download speeds...

Canada needs to fix their internet, fast.

And once again The Escpapist goes out of its way to alienate those that don't swill McDonald's for breakfast. You know the internet doesn't live in the USA, right?

No, I just hate such unthinking arrogance.

Hell yeah! Gotta get back home after this and my college degree is finished!

So how much does it cost to live in Kansas City?
I really hope this technology catches on and spreads to the rest of the US/ the world.
It's actually pretty decent to live around here, though I'm not entirely sure what the average cost is myself. Sure, not much really happens here in Kansas, being in the middle of nowhere, but the people here are generally quite nice (baring the Phelps extended family).

What? I doubt hillbillies even know what the internet is! Why give it to them? Give it to ME! I NEED ALL THE PORN!
Oh you. ^_^ You gotta let us Kansans have SOMETHING to hold over the heads of the other states that they don't have. It seems that other than the dealings with the WBC, Kansas doesn't really get any kind of attention, and that's definitely not the kind we want.

What in the blazes are you talking about?
Google, a US based company, had this "contest" to decide where in the US they would implement this internet line, so how is it any way alienating or arrogant to say 1,100 cities around the country. Clearly from the article it is referring to the US. Also, you what's with the (confusing) McDonald's thing? I hope you realize that McDonalds is all over the world, and (at least from my experience) I've noticed that McDonalds is way more packed throughout the entire day than anywhere in the US. Seriously I've been all the way to Japan, and all around Eastern Europe, and these places have like 5 minute lines throughout the day to buy anything and they have like 6+ registers open. I know back home in the states I've seen fast food places with 2 registers open and maybe 3-4 people ordering at a time.
Maybe you should shed some of that American hate, cause the writer of the article clearly had no intention of being arrogant in any way shape or form, and trying to call him out is just....yeah...

It will be a long time before you can actually download something at 1GB a second. You will still be at the mercy of the upload speed.
