I just hope that this isn't an april fools joke... because if it works well once they're done with it, there's a chance they'll do something similar in other places

Well, in Latvia (Eastern Europe), we have had 100 Mbit/s internet for some time now (~2-3 years). And our (biggest) ISP is providing 200-500 Mbit/s (!) fiber internet to some areas. And it's been around for a year too.
We have 1-2 Mbit/s internet at our campus by default.

The thing is - not every server (game or web) has so huge upload speed and some computers even have lower data tranfer rate than this. It's just for showoff you know.
