Imagine what's possible with a 1 gigabit per second internet connection. You could download an HD movie in 5 minutes, video chat with your entire extended family with no network strain, and watch all the porn.
I imagine that the last bit would become quite the chore eventually [http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/06/this-is-why-ill-never-be-adult.html].

Day 1: WATCH ALL THE PORN!
Day 9: Watch all the porn?
That link's post on procrastination reminds me of myself so much xD

Never had the misfortune. What they do to ya?
I could easily sum it up with "They are my cell phone service providers" and that would pretty much tell the whole thing but I'll go in to detail.
(Reads detail.)

Damn, that sucks. That's just... woah. And I thought the stuff I'd heard coming out of Mobilicity was bad. Yipes!

This came to mind after reading the article. Thus I shall dedicate it to them:

No, I just hate such unthinking arrogance.
What in the blazes are you talking about?
Google, a US based company, had this "contest" to decide where in the US they would implement this internet line, so how is it any way alienating or arrogant to say 1,100 cities around the country. Clearly from the article it is referring to the US. Also, you what's with the (confusing) McDonald's thing? I hope you realize that McDonalds is all over the world, and (at least from my experience) I've noticed that McDonalds is way more packed throughout the entire day than anywhere in the US. Seriously I've been all the way to Japan, and all around Eastern Europe, and these places have like 5 minute lines throughout the day to buy anything and they have like 6+ registers open. I know back home in the states I've seen fast food places with 2 registers open and maybe 3-4 people ordering at a time.
Maybe you should shed some of that American hate, cause the writer of the article clearly had no intention of being arrogant in any way shape or form, and trying to call him out is just....yeah...
Who gives a fuck where Google are based or that they held a contest there?! I read a news article on a supposedly international gaming website that referred to the USA as 'the country' and only as 'the country'. That I could work it out from the context doesn't make it any less alienating and exclusive. I'm not confused about what the article means to say, I'm disappointed that it fails to consider 194 countries noteworthy (for the sake of argument let's assume that Taiwan is a country).

The McDonalds comment was a throwaway resort to a lazy stereotype because it felt appropriate. That said, you can hardly blame me when 12,000 of the 31,000 McDonalds worldwide are in the USA (and this may help explain the relative lack of congestion you report having experienced)(FYI the next highest is Japan on 3,500, then Canada and the UK on a little over 1,00- each).

Now for a little comprehension exercise. What do you think the word 'unthinking' means? Is it a) deliberate?
b) unintentional?
c) purple dinosaur?

Unthinking arrogance is when you're arrogant without even thinking about it. If you're not thinking about it, it's very unlikely to be intentional. I'm not 'calling him out' because as I understand it, that term would mean issuing some kind of challenge. There's no challenge from me, just criticism.

I don't have any American hate, I positively like Canadians and Mexicans, and I've no quarrel with any individual Yank (you need to come up with a pronoun for yourselves that doesn't assume no-one else exists on your continent), though you are right to pick up on a strong distaste for the national character of the USA. Just not really a fan of brain-washed, war-mongering, consumerist fatties. Which of course not all of you are, but certainly a large proportion.

It's more like half, and its really only in the south. Like if i were to say that the large majority of people where you are pretentious a-holes that have nothing better to do than whine about something completely arbitrary on a topic that has nothing to do with the OP. Obviously that would be wrong, but i could totally throw a blatantly malignant stereotype out about you just as everyone else does for America.

P.S. for the record we are The United States of ->America<- we have every right to call ourselves Americans. If YOU have a problem with that then I humbly invite YOU to come of with something better. United statican is too long, its already been discussed.

Ummm I'd like to look at the words I have made bold in your response.
So you take offense to the OP for "the country" used synonymously for the US without considering the fact that there are other countries, but its cool for you to do the same to me? Should probably take a look at that little red and white flag in my profile before you make such a generalization.

My internet is 1MB/s

For me, this would be like going from the stone-age straight beyond the future into the future future.
-sigh- I have 312Kb/s... Which is why I do not download games, I buy the boxed versions.

Yeah, this would be pretty neat, but I don't need it. The only reason you need a 1Gb/s data stream is if you are constantly downloading movies, running some kind of game server in your basement, or making a backup of the internet. My internet works just fine with slower speeds.

wait, they're putting fibers to kansas as part of 'next-gen' internet?
At our university we've had fibers for almost a decade now, connecting all universities, associated student homes etc in the country. Given, the local hubs and ethernet cables limit the speed you're getting to 100mbit/s (out of the 1gbit/s on the fiber) but even this speed is more then the average hardware can handle. Downloading at 9-10Mb/s (this is 72-80mbit/s) most computers would hang, unable to process the incoming data, and send receipt confirmation packets to the server.

Bottom line, fiber internet isn't new, it's just that it's apparently not widespread enough in the US that you guys make a big deal out of it.
m8 there really isnt a problem with downloading in 10-11MByte per second unless youre using a very old HDD that cannot write that fast, and if its 1gbit they are building it really isnt new
but if it is 1gbyte its quite new

I knew someone was going to make a porn joke with this, but on the very first post?

Anyway, if they get this to work and adapt it to XBOX LIVE, *says this with cautious optimisism* no more lag EVAR!!!!

I've always been under the impression that your only as fast as the slowest link in the grand internet chain. (I'm blanking on the correct termnoligy..) So just because you have that kind of breakneck speed for an ISP, you'll still only be as fast as, what the Valve or Netflicks server obreate at, am i right? So, while it's an intresting leap forward, if it isn't widly implemented, would it really matter that much?

intresting non the less.

Please come to Canada and save us from the tyranny that is the big telecoms. That is all.
And how long do you think it will be before Google becomes a big, tyrannical --- oh wait, they already are.
Yea they only provide free email, free internet search engines, pay for youtube, free web browser, google earth, android phones, and work to protect chinese activists from hackers.

Good assessment of their tyranny.
