Yeah okay, kind of hard to sum up the significance of D-Day, while simultaneously honouring all the nationalities that fought in that battle (including German soldiers) while keeping it to the word "google".

I personally think that each and every day google should put up a view of the inside of the human head where the "G" is, and where the brain sits, a big steaming pile of shit should be there instead. Thats about as current as you can and ever will get in regards to human affairs.

As has already been mentioned a few times, if they were making a stab at anyone, they hit basically every Western country BESIDES Germany and Spain with it. Hardly anti-American.

I find it interesting that when an American politician sees something they don't like, they call it "Un-American" as if its the harshest insult in the world. There are hundreds of things i wouldn't call particularly American (such as everything invented outside of America) and though the US have produced some good things, they have also produced a lot of garbage. Say for every NASA there is a McDonolds.

Anti-American? WW2 was not, as American war films would like to convince us, the Americans versus Hitler. You could just as easily call Google anti-French or anti-British. The Normandy Landings involved Canadian and British troops as well as Americans and members of French resistance movements.

It's not anti-anything to fail to represent something with their logos. Did Microsoft have anything on their site about the D-day landings? What about General Motors and CocaCola? Does that make them anti-American too? Google chooses to point out interesting dates with its logos, it's not making any statement to choose something geeky rather than historical.

A 25th anniversary is more significant than a 65th anyway.

Being an American, I'd like to give a few important points for people that aren't from the United States.

First, and most importantly, anything that is labled as Conservative, or right wing, or Republican, can be discounted as a ridiculous opinion from the stupid loud people who would coat the USA in shit if they thought they could get a few misinformed want-to-be-patriots to join their cause, which is to coat the USA in shit so a few more misinformed want-to-be-patriots... It's a terrible cycle which makes the rest of the world hate us.

Second, those of us that aren't involved in the aforementioned cycle, are the real patriots, on here defending google's right not to show a bloody re-creation of D-day on their front page. We know the internet doesn't belong to the USA, we know that there are other countries out there who might use google if our rightwing fuckheads don't bomb their country into the stone age, and we know that we weren't THE ONLY FREAKING PEOPLE IN WORLD WAR II!

*My fellow Americans may step in here to say that I don't love America, or that I hate our troops in Iraq...blah blah blah. I love the USA, and I try my best to make the USA better everyday, I want it to be the shining beacon of hope that, lady liberty stood for in days past. America is my home, and I don't like idiots using it as a weapon in their crusade against everything different.

Third, BARACK OBAMA FOR THE WIN!

But for those of you who were complaining about people not recognizing the losses on June 6th 1944, let us all remember that we are able to speak freely about anything we wish, partially because of their sacrifice.

Ps. Gmail rocks!

I thought liberals were supposed to be accepting of others. I guess not.

Ironically, the internet was invented by the US military in the 1960s and actually owned by an American company until the early 1990s...

Thanks for playing though.

Do you think on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Americans will get pissed if Google doesn't have an image up for it?
No. They won't. If they put up that image, it'd be regarded as tasteless. But as long as it's men in uniform dying, it's ok.

Personally, I find it more offensive that the Americans have leapt on this and screamed 'Anti-American'.
To be honest, I think it's just as anti-British, anti-Canadian, anti-anybody else, and even anti-German. Sure, the Nazis were the 'bad guys', but hell, they're still people. But if you so much as sypmathise with them or their families, you're a heretic and must burn in hell.

Yup. That's reasonable.

Is it possible for Americans to be humble, and not demand years of praise for single feats?

Dude, the only people screaming about this are extreme right wingers who make up maybe 5% of our population. The only reason why this particular thread keeps continuing is because the international community feels the need to bash America as a whole, kinda like what you are doing.

And FYI, I am a conservative and I think this whole thing is boarderline retarded. Google can do what they want.

i think its more the fact that many soldiers died in the d-day invasion. i agree that it shouldn't just be american soldiers recognized. im a conservative american, and every time i see a group of us get selfish and cry about what WE have done for the world i want to backhand them. we are all human beings, we all live on the same planet, everybody just needs to stop whining about who saved who and just get on with their lives. i will say, dont forget the lessons the past has taught us, but we dont need to harp on past accomplishments.

If you'll notice, most of the flak is coming from conservative representatives. Now, the Republican party are very centered towards war and Christianity and all those other things that people tend to get pissed at us about. Basically, if someone or thing ignored or derides something related to something we killed or blew up, or the Christian religion, it is bad and must be steamrolled. They also tend to be the folks that say that violent games make violent people, and that TV should be censored so children can't be corrupted, whereas the truth is that violent people like violent games, and the parents should monitor the children themselves.

It's basically a huge finger-pointing game to try to force their opinion and beliefs down the throats of everyone they can, while covering their own ass. Mind you, the Democrats are just as ignorant in their own right, but at least they try to let people be free and make their own choices in life...Y'know, "uphold the Constitution" and all that garbage nobody cares about anymore. But regardless, to the conservative eye, happy and fun will always be bad when compared to getting our people blown up then crying about it decades later when everyone else is trying to get past it. It's like going up to your girlfriend every year and being like, "Hey, your dad died on this day 10 years ago! Let's commemorate!" Chances are she's not gonna put out after that. Just because some people don't want to celebrate yet another of America's dick measuring contests, doesn't mean we're dishonoring the dead. We never forget, but we don't dwell on it like it's happening again every single year. Honor all of the dead every day of your life, not on some arbitrary date that a few more people than normal died. And don't ***** at other people for not doing it if they don't want to.

google is anti-america! for reals, Ad-Sense is clearly a front for a communist operation, and having the Googleplex in Santa Clara, California is a perfect location to launch an attack on our wholesome American values with their front-page banners depicting recent technological history. Thanks, random fox news wannabe, from my red-white-and-blue heart. [/eyeroll]

im a conservative republican. not for christianity(i am an agnostic) and not for war, i hate going to war for stupid preemptive reasons. i joined solely for the fact the republican party was concerned at one time with keeping america a free republic. keeping the government out of everyday decisions which would encourage americans to go out and make their life their own. what makes up the popular side of the republican party now is a group of backwards idiots and a group of neo cons who bang the war drum for their business buddies as much as possible. so basically the rich and the stupid.
