Only recently played Arcanum, but I have to agree that that intro was really good for the setting (and further helped by the character creator).

Also, I have to throw in another vote for the original Dawn of War's intro, still looks better than it had any right being.

And Diablo II's intro mostly for the heavy nostalgia factor.

I remember I used to think the intro to Wing Commander IV was awesome, but seeing it again it feels really cheasy. I think it was the effect of "OMG it has real actors" that made it feel special back then. Bioware did raise the bar quite a bit in the realm of space opera intros.

I really liked the mission in Saints Row: The Third when you jump out the plane, it's not quite the opening but it's still pretty early.
