Uh... excuse me? Did you just say it won't have the standard dwarf-human-elf races?

I... umm... I think we might be referring to different games.

See, I was talking about Guild Wars 2. The game that will feature a race of small people with advanced technology, a race of bog-standard humans and not one but two varieties of nature-loving elves [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXlzIRYA4NE].

Sure, there's the big muscular werewolf things and I suppose one could argue that the dwarves are more like gnomes. But I certainly don't feel like I'm looking down the barrel of any real innovation here.

Oh well, at least all those standard fantasy races will be able to jump when the need arises.
Here's a few questions that need asking:
1) Do dwarves and gnomes have giant robots and laser weapons? If anything they're alien greys (or Protoss, heh).
2) What's wrong with wanting to be a human?
3) Can elves turn into bears? and do bears love nature?
4) What is the difference between loving nature and owning it? Look closer at the Sylvari beast for a hint.
5) Can you really say anything bad about a giant, murderous kitty cat?

If none of these questions occurred to you, I suggest you pay closer attention to that video.

What it is is a variety of character archetypes that are interesting to play (one might argue them as "standardized", for lack of a better term). What it is not is yet another rip off of Tolkien (which every other fantasy adventure does, including DnD and it's offspring).
I think that's what Tandtroll was talking about.
The little guys are called Asura, they are golemancers mostly

There are Dwarves but they won't be playable and there will be very few of them

The big Warewolf Beast is called Charr

Then theres the Norn, basicly 8 foot tall humans, they can turn into bears

Humans

and Sylvari(look like elves but are actually born from nature

I've been reading their blog posts for a couple months now - they have some fantastic things planned, and I'm definitely interested in what they're doing. They'll be at GamesCom in Germany for their first playable public demo, and I'm eager to see what people say once they get their hands on it. If they've managed to do even half the things they've been wanting to I'll be pretty pleased.

I didn't like Guild Wars 1, and GW2 seems like something I would rent...if that were possible, which it's not, so I just won't bother with it. I'll just resume waiting for TOR.

Guild Wars always had a fantastic art style, and the game play was interesting.
Ultimately I stopped playing because I found everything too restrictive. The limit of 8 skills forced cookie-cutter builds that left no room for adaptation during a fight, and the instanced world started to feel very lonely.
Almost the entire game was structured around playing in a party, and the introduction of hero NPCs not only gave it a strong RTS feel just chock full of micro-management, but also pretty much killed the multiplayer aspect of the game.

I'm hopeful for GW2, but not overly optimistic.

How will they make enough quests to make a grind free game where every quest has a impact on the rest of the world?
By not having ridiculously high level cap.
They said the level cap is 80, but each level takes just as long to get to.
It's not about the number of level, it's about the amount of time it takes to get to that level. But yeah they're also thinking of a no level cap model, dunno if they abandon that or not.
The asuras are not dwarves since there were dwarves before but they got turned into stone, the Sylvari are more like fairies than elves and the charr are unlike any I'VE ever seen atleast. I can see your point ofcourse, but I dont really know what you'd rather have??
... as much time as i've spent defending GW2 and it's innovations, I have to make an observation. The Charr are not completely original. The Charr are Klingons, only more cat-like. (it's actually quite fascinating the similarities, and totally worth researching)

Since I'm already picking nits... The Sylvari are Dryads, childlike spirits of nature born from trees and in command of everything flora, especially trees. Faeries are those little winged buggers, often born of flowers, and tend to have otherworldly magical powers, often related to, but not directly involving, nature. (some fantasy systems consider dryads and faeries subgroups of the various nature spirits and virtually identical. again, totally worth checking out if mythical critters are of interest). The Sylvari also resemble Elves at first glance, but are actually quite distinct.

I only say this because I think its neat researching this kind of stuff, and I believe others would enjoy it too.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: GW2 looks (so far) like one hell of an awesome game.

I played the first one for like 6 months I really enjoyed it. but to be honest I think that most of the things that they have said are just empty promises in order to sell as many as possible during it launch.

Someone once said (or I might have made it up, so I'll take credit for it, ha!), "Any MMO game is only as fun as the friends you play it with."

It looks like Guild Wars 2 took a page from Biowares '4th Pillar of MMO's' But it deffinetly looks great, the cities look lively and the combat is stunning.
That's what I thought as well.

It certainly looks gorgeous, espeacially for an MMO. This isn't going to be a game I buy on day 1, mainly because I'm looking forward to SW:TOR, and secondly because Guild Wars 1 wasn't all that great. I'm just hoping they give out some free-trials to see if it's worth it.

Yes. Bear, Wolf, Raven and the new Snow Leopard. I'd like to see a sixth race playable in a future expansion... raise your hands if you want to play as a Tengu! *raises hand*

One thing that seemed to go overlooked so far is how environment seems to bee effecting combat. In one part of the video, a mage puts down an aoe skill, and their ranger partner uses whirling defense to spread the aoe in various directions at various enemies. The mage using a water spell had to actually be in a source of water. The ranger who put down a fire pit gained a fire buff on the arrows he shot through it. One of the mage spells adjusted course in reference to the mage's position. Obviously playing this game is gonna get A LOT more tactical then your typical MMO

Really looking forward to this. will be buying day of release if not shortly there after.

This video was too much fluff and not enough concrete information to say anything about it. They just listed off common problems and said they won't be like that.

I've checked out the site. The classes look interesting -if completely skeletal right now- and I like the asura and charr races, but while they may go by another name I know an orc(even if it does have canines and fur) and a gnome when I see one. It surprises me that I like the tiny ones because I hate gnomes in most games.

That lady in the video had a wall of text to expand upon the concept of personal story. It sounds interesting, but I'm worried it may end up having quite a short life for an MMO, which thrives on having no real end. It also sounds like there are going to be instances and a lot of them at that. I'm not a fan of the things.

http://guildwars2.com/en/the-game/personal-stories/personal-story-overview/

Blizzard did alright with the instances as they were just a part of a huge and open world, and if Guild War 2 lacks that, then I'll have a hard time getting into it. Part of the appeal of an MMO for me isn't some fancy scripted story but the dynamic fun that can only come from being up too late with some friends and deciding to swarm a village with undead alts screaming "Brains!". Those are things I remember.

There only 2 things I look for in an MMO: 1. Open Worlds and 2. balance playable styles. The first Guild Wars failed horribly on both these, why should I expect to play Guild Wars 2? As far as I know they didn't change these factors.
Its open world now.... and wtf are you talking about the playable styles not being balanced?

That sounds plausible, so why did ANet introduce a mechanism in the second expansion that promoted playing with AI over real people?
None of my friends played Guild Wars and the 'You have to do it this way' mentality of he game, coupled with the 'You have to play in a party, but here's some AI henchmen for you to take instead of players' made it hard to make friends in game.

I liked the game at launch, I really did, but after a while it just became too inflexible.

Well, this looks promising again. And I loved the first game. I'll definitely buy and test it. It's free from monthly fees, what do I have to lose?

Actually, it has always been a sort of moto for Arena net, they NEVER, and I mean never, talk about game mechanics unless they are already in-game and working.
This video is nothing more than a re-cap of the articles they have been releasing for some time from now, if any of you here thinks "sounds good, but I don't buy it", go read those articles, they get into a lot of detail about how all these mechanics work, and you'll see that what they promise is real..

If you are still doubtfull, next week there will be a live demo so I'm guessing we'll be getting some feedback ;)

I'm waiting until the first demos and Beta are out so that I can see how the combat runs (they've stated there are no heal-based classes anymore) but instead use more of a Boarderland-esq "Fight for your life" system of dying.

If they can pull off the dynamic event system I'll be in love. It's a large open war in a constant state of war between civilization and ancient dragons w/ armies in tow, finding excuses to send waves of enemies to attack outlaying towns shouldn't be that hard. Then add in wandering bandits and oddity requests and plenty of things to do with no quest hubs to look for, just pillars of fire.

Races are gnome, klingon, dryad, human, and muscular humans; which I'm fine with but I'm really twitching to see the other 6 classes they haven't shown yet.
