Damn, I guess I must be a forensics expert and renowned psychologist from watching any CSI and Criminal Minds. Shit. Who needs a diploma when I can just turn to the next best thing?! Jeez. Way for people to take these guys' hobbies and just teabag them in the face.

Ridiculous.

More like the Moron Effect. It's when an idiot watches one show, reads one book, whatever, and suddenly thinks they're an expert in a field you happen to specialize in, when in reality they know nothing.

PS: The L85A1 is a piece of crap. The magazine has to be CAREFULLY inserted, unlike the slamming home of the AG3. The loading arm is small and hard to reach. the safety is a small (as in 1-2 mm diameter) button that is way to easy to push by accident. Just my personal opinions though, and I'm not a professional.
I thought that was the opinion of everyone who ever picked one up.

There is only a few phrases that spring to mind upon hearing this:

Ha.

Give a gun based game to the immature and they'll know it all...

Hmmm, I play This mythical game, Cod:MW2. and i am certainly not a gun enthusiast, nor do I know much about guns. But thats because I have "healthier" interests, like videogames with good storytelling, and Anime..... speaking of which, back to Bleach!!!

im sorry to all you americans out there but the phrase:
"ONLY IN AMERICA"
covers this one quite nicely.
This would never happen in say...Australia or the UK....or most EU countrys..... CAUSE THEY AIN'T STUPID ENOUGH TO SELL GUNS TO CIVILLIANS

My theory is because many gamers are sad nerds, but if they had a gun, they wouldn't be just a nerd. They would be a proud and "cool" gun owner.

The problem is that MW2 =/= real life.

A formula many people seems to have a problem with.

They're annoyed simply because people have heard of these guns from games? Man, I thought there were some people in the gaming community who were exclusivist elitist idiots.

"No, I don't want new people to be attracted to my hobby. I want to be as fringe as possible." The noob headshotting story is disturbing, but becoming irritated simply because someone has heard of an ACR is kind of retarded.

No more so than video game enthusiast, I suppose.

Anyway, I've definitely heard of this before. Can't say I ever listen.
Wh... What?

How is being a gun enthusiast any different than being an enthusiast of anything?

Edit to add: The number of people who use the word 'clip' in this thread makes me rage.
Because I don't want anyone within a 100-mile radius of me to be enthusiastic about guns.

My main problem is that gun enthusiasm is born from the public (in the States, not sure where else) en masse having the right to own a firearm.

Er, no. The author of the gun blog linked in the first post didn't say anything about being annoyed, he just made the observation that previously obscure weapons have suddenly become well known due to being featured in popular media. As for the commenters on that post, I can't speak for all of them, but the gist of it that I got was that they're annoyed at idiots who, having played the game, suddenly think they're some kind of experts on the subject; and I couldn't agree more, people like that are annoying.

Since I'm sure you share my hatred of arrogant, ignorant know-it-alls, I'd say your vitriol is misguided.

I'll admit to not reading the entire link, but the tone of some of the comments in the original post on this site (not to mention the title) give an impression of annoyance at little more than knowledge of the existence of these weapons. ("Where the hell did you hear of an ACR?") It's like someone taught outsiders their secret handshake, and now their feelings are hurt.

And... vitriol? You thought my post was vitriolic? That was me being calm.

Well, I haven't seen any comments, here or there, that explicitly state that, nor did I get that impression from any of the others.

You're right, that word was a bit too strong for the circumstances.

I loved guns before loving games, and always found amusing the people that claims to be experts for that, I remember something like that happened when CS was out. It's always funny as the first time.

You know what? I'm okay with this. We have another growing subgroup of whackjobs that think they know the ins and out of firearms. But everything's alright, because when people like that actually try to use a gun, they'll find out that real life does not have aim assist, be utterly confounded when hit with a jam, and to paraphrase Ron White, won't be able to hit a Suburban at point blank range.

They're riding right on the coattails of the geniuses that decided holding a gun sideways "gangsta" style was a good idea.

Golden test: tell me what to do in a misfire, and I'll pass you as competent.
There's a rule called the 30 second rule, basically the chambered round "MAY" go off within that period of time, the general rule of thumb is to keep the weapon aimed down rage as if you were taking the shot, after the 30 or so seconds has elapsed, carefully extract the chambered round while keeping your face away from the bolt and ensuring no one is stood behind you, then carefully dispose of the round safely, i.e ammo lock box.

I've been shooting live ammunition from various calibres of rifles and shotguns from 12 bore to .22 rimfire to 5.56 nato semi and full auto since I was 13, air rifles before that, I'm nearly 26 :)

gee some people never learn eh? , being a mech tech i have people ask me about cars and racing and i will ask where you get your info, they say a video game , i just chuckle and try to dumb down my answers ,this is just like the cod effect and is wrong

most couldn't handle a race car or gun without proper training , just because you have tools doesn't mean you are a mechanic either...

life is not a video game, there is no repawning or reset button

Well tecnically you could get a Bushmaster ACR as long as you have the licenses and it falls into code.

but its still over 3 grand not counting all of the hoops you need to jump through to get it. For some reason people believe that Americans walk into gun stores with big wads of cash and walk out with assault rifles.

those people fall into the category of "Dumbass", or "euro-trash"
And then we carry those guns with us at all times.

Listen up: if you have a gun out with you in public, the police are going to pull out THEIR gun and point it at you and start screaming. You can't just walk around with guns.
