Heh, I find this kinda funny.
Although it is quite true. Games do give us knowledge on a range of guns.
Or at least lets us know they exist, and what they look like. :|
Well yeam, (real life) personal experience is the one true way to learn about a gun, You cant just play a game and expect to know how to use one, there are a lot of ins and outs. :)

Experienced alot of this before. At least one person has sraight-face told me that "Strategy games make you a real commander and I would be great in the militray." Guns are a similar kettle of chimps, and plenty of my friends have mistook WASRs for FULL AUTO AKKKKKKKS BLAM BLAM BURRAP and generally believe that COD is an adequete gun tutor. PROTIP: As a target shooter and ocasional COD playerer, IT ABSOLUTELY IS NOT.

In other news, I love the Firearms Blog.

Damn it.

I'm a gamer and I want a gun, but not for these reasons! These people are idiots and don't have good reason to have a firearm or even have the knowledge or skill to handle one! They're just going to hurt someone!

... And yes, I want one to defend myself against zombies, but that is a completely legitimate reason...

Thank God they don't sell guns to the regular public where I live... Moreover, we still frown upon 'gun enthusiasts'.

Golden test: tell me what to do in a misfire, and I'll pass you as competant.

Amazing how some people blur the line between games and reality. I'm surprised that Forza hasn't turned everyone into racing pros.
The Forza pros tend to end up wrapped around telephone poles when they realise that "Oh. My riced-out Celica can't ACTUALLY do hairpin turns at 90+ when I'm still driving with economy tires."

y dont they ever put the S&W 500 into games? you think the most powerful handgun ever would be in games rather than the Desert Eagle :p

and it looks like Battlefield bad company will be using the XM8 [http://world.guns.ru/assault/as61-e.htm], which im pretty sure the US military gave up on now, rather than the now famous Bushmaster ACR [http://world.guns.ru/civil/civ018-e.htm] which apparently is a civilian weapon <.<

I live in the UK, automatic hand guns are very illegal in the UK, even if the shop had one, they wouldn't show it to you. In fact, aside from break shotguns and full size, bolt action rifles you aren't seeing anything.

It's just amazing how many people wandering in expecting to just be able to buy Counter Strike armoury over the... counter.
Bugger, I quite like the ACR too. Was a good gun once you unlocked it =P

Nah, living in the UK I know of the laws, sdtill makes me wish I had a shotgun hidden away just in case the Zombies do rise...
That sucks. On the other hand, though, where I live, not just anyone can buy stuff like the ACR either. There's a very complicated licensing and tax system to own and purchase each gun, and finding a federally licensed dealer to ship them to after ordering and purchasing can take time in some areas.

Unload the clip, put the safety on, keep it pointing away from people and look for someone who knows what they're doing?

EDIT the second - By "unload the clip, I mean eject, not fire randomly."
Wrong. Keep the firearm pointed downrange for at LEAST 30 seconds. After a sufficient time has passed to where it is believed beyond a reasonable doubt the cartridge will not go off, safety on, remove the magazine, and cycle the action to remove the round. Dispose of in a proper manner.
Well, considering I completely guessed, I think I got pretty close, huh? :p

I'm an underground gun enthusiast. I only like guns that aren't in Call of Duty. I also only like cars that haven't been in Gran Turismo, music that hasn't been in guitar hero, and sexual positions that haven't been in a Bioware game.

I don't lead a very interesting life.

Well the only thing I would claim to know about guns from video games is their names and what they look like from actually firing and using them I know a bit more.

I think this is definitely something worth noting, as I've seen this effect in some of my friends, and even in myself.

Every now and then we notice a gun in a film or something and just seem to know the model name and what scope it has.

That said, it's just a damn game. Neither of us have ever held a gun in real life and for that matter don't really plan to either.

Somehow, I highly doubt holding and shooting a real gun is like holding an Xbox controller.

*sigh* there is a difference between recognising something and really "knowing" about it, and yet another vast chasm between knowing about something and really being able to use it safely.

I would easily recognise a Buggati Veyron but I know that getting behind the wheel and trying to use the bugger would be a recipie for expensive disaster.

Likewise with firearms.

I airsoft (milsim) with a lot of Trained firearm officers and Millitary or Ex-Millitary types (along with JOE IT Day job etc) and the big difference is you not only learn about weapons, but the respect and consideration due when handling them.

Something a lot of idiots don't get (sometimes even after loosing an eye...)
To those I say we let Darwinism take it's course, it's only inevitable after all.
(Remembers the guy with a weapon jam taking his saftey goggles off to stare down the barrel while pulling the trigger to "see" what was stuck being rugby tackbled by the marshall to stop him blinding himself)
*sigh*
So true, man.

ya know, there was a guy who owned the local comic book shop near me, who thought he was an expert shot with a gun because he was good at FPSs.

that is, till i convinced him to go to the local firing range with me.

Well the same people think Desert Eagles are "good weapons".

I laugh.
some people insist that they are called Deagles also.

I love my Desert Eagle, though my wrist hates me for even using it.

Whats scary is that people think the ACR is actually good when I can name numerous weapons that are actually better.

Akdal Ghost

MPA

MP-446 Viking

Bushmaster M17S

BXP

I would love to see any vdeogame weapon experts try to describe how just those five weapons work.
You aim, pull the trigger and stuff drops dead or at least gets holes in it. Maybe.

This article made me laugh though.

That's pretty scary...Thinking of the n00b hunters buying REAL guns
I wouldn't be too concerned. Zero skill is required to kill in Halo and CoD (prove me wrong) with a sniper rifle, or anything really. They probably couldn't figure out how to LOAD the rifle to begin with! xD
they would probably look for the X button XD hehe sorry had to...

this acctualy does scare me, imagine your walking down the street then all you here is *bang bang* and loads of squeaky voices, turn the corner and theirs a huge noob war...

id shit it =| lol

My best friend is a collector of vintage firearms, so I'm well aware of this trend. The worst is when people Deagle-troll or Deagle-fap; 99% of gun nuts know that the Desert Eagle is a useless fucking weapon, but the noobs can't get enough of the stuff. Before the story even really started, I knew that Modern Warfare II was going to be ass-backwards retarded when the FIRST new gun you have to pick up in game is a fucking Deagle.
