I read novels and watch movies with female protagonists/viewpoint characters/narrators, so I don't see how it's weird to play a game with a female character.

I was just trying to think of a reason why guys so often seem to play women in video games.
My brother plays almost exclusively female characters, and I know he isn't alone. I honestly can't think of single good reason to, for me, all it would do is spoil the immersion as I'm NOT a girl. So, anyone who does play as a woman in games, why? Feel free to speculate even if you don't play a woman, but please try not to just descend into "COz ThEy ARe PerVS LoL!".

TLDR: Why do men play as women?

EDIT: Women who play as men also feel free to reply as to why you do.

This is not about sexism, I am NOT saying you can't play as a woman, I just want to know why you do.

Reasons so far:

To see if it changes anything on the second playthrough.

More aesthetically pleasing.

Access to certain classes.

Distance yourself from the character.

Free stuff from online perverts.
The real question is why does it matter to you? If Jim Bob wants to play as a chick what does it matter?

I have seen this question asked more times then I can count, and never has it ever been anything more then completely and utterly pointless.

Would you go around asking a human why they want to play as a dwarf? I am a human and could not begin to wrap my head around what it would be like to be a dwarf. How is playing as a dwarf any different then playing as a female. In fact I would imagine that playing as at the very least a human female would be easier then a male dwarf since I am sure you have met at least one human female. Actual dwarves are harder to come by I would imagine.

lets face it, in 3rd person you have to stare at a lot of bobbing arse as you control your hero. if you want to play as a man you just failed the "gay test" by actually wanting to spend days watching a dudes butt.

seriously tho, games are about escapism, and feisty kick-ass female protaganists are more fun if not in any way real. is that sexist? No, just realist. name one female explorer, arceologist, martial arts champion, assassin, soldier, thief, racing driver etc. in real life....
can't think of one?
that's cos there aren't any. Sadly, in an attempt not to be sexist we've objectiifed and imagined this uber-female and created a whole imaginary sterotype. are the male charcters any better not really, but at least the girl one's have cute butts to watch running round endless mazes and so on
First off fuck you, second in my 25 years of gaming Ive never once had the desire to stare at my main characters ass maybe your the one with the problem if you see a guys ass and need to take a look. As for my reasons for playing male character(ill play female if I feel like trying something different)is gaming is a form of escapism and projecting myself onto the main character in whatever setting(space marine, wizard, etc., etc.) is just more enjoyable.

I guess the reasons boil down to, differing abilities in some games, perverts dressing them up very skimpily, role playing a female character.

At what point did I say it mattered to me? I am just curious. Or maybe you are right. I will stop questioning anything. BEEP BOOP. EXCUSE ME WHILE I TURN INTO A ROBOT. BEEP BOOP.

In games where you can design your character, I usually start with one that looks like me. On my next playthrough, assuming the game warrants a second go, I usually make a character that is as exactly unlike me as the first one was my twin.

Being a white man, my opposite usually ends up being an exotic looking female character.

Also, part of the appeal of gaming is immersing yourself in exceptional or unusual circumstances, usually completely different from your own day-to-day (I have no interest in playing a game where the object is to make it out of the house on time to catch the train to the office), and the world of gaming allows you to wear other faces and identities through which to experience these circumstances.

You don't have to play as a female character if you don't want to. But you CAN, and I think that's where some of the fun lies.

If I have a choice, I will always play a Male in a game, like if I am creating my own character. I won't mind if I don't have a choice and am forced into playing a female though.

The only game where I play as a women is in Fallout, and I do it for no other reason than being different.

It's a different point of view. While games are more about BEING the character (as opposed to movies), there is still a separation between gamer and character and you want to experience what happens to her (or him). It's why you've probably never heard someone complain about having to play Samus Aran.

It's also unique. The type of bad-ass woman portrayed in Tomb Raider or Kill Bill is exceptionally rarely encountered (at least in developed nations). Most women who qualify as bad-ass in real life are bad-ass bosses, bad-ass nurses, bad-ass lawyers, bad-ass mothers, bad-ass girlfriends, etc. They don't beat the shit out of bad guys and save the day (excluding cops and soldiers, of course).

Of course, the same is true for almost all men, but the archetype has been around at least since Mad Max. The same archetype involving women didn't see much representation until fairly recently, and even then it's usually in games. There was only one Ripley, only one Sarah Connor, throughout the 80's and the early 90's. We now have La Femme Nikita and The Bride and half the damned cast of Sucker Punch, but compare this to all the Swarzenegger movies, Sons of Anarchy (ok, Katey Segal's character is a badass), all the westerns and all the Tarantino films except Kill Bill.

Because I'm not a woman. If a game gives me the freedom to do something I've never and likely never will do then I'll play it. Ultimately it's a poor substitute to real life, but I don't want to be a woman by any measure.

Two reasons:

1. I play videogames as a form of (you guessed it) escapism. What am I "escaping" from, if I go from being a caucasian male to being another caucasian male? Yeah, I'll gain maybe a decade, and a body that you could see from space. Exciting.

2. I find it impossible to empathise with the male protagonists of the day. It's usually their designs- ridiculous designer wish-fulfilment, the "perfect" specimen.

Whilst this does apply to both genders, I find it tends to be so over the top with women that I can't take the sexualisation seriously. With men, their musculature is usually *just* realistic enough that it's implied that it makes perfect sense for, say, Joe nine-to-five to be a total beefcake.

For the free stuff from suckers.

/sarcasm

It's nice to pretend.

/sarcasm

It's a change of perspective, and there's that certain something of doing all the same things that a male character would do, but as a woman, that has an appeal. Sticking it to the status quo I guess.

Why not?

If I had the chance, i'd pick to play as a toad or a robotic goat.

I don't really think about it, I just tend to play as female characters.

Take it as you will

I just feel like it sometimes, I don?t see it as a big deal to switch between the two from game to game and it doesn?t ruin my immersion. I?m not sure why it should ruin my immersion.

In most games when i play a female charecter its because i kinda hate outfitting male charecters which is a big part in many games, and therefor i mostly play as a famale charecter, because i better know what looks i like on a female than a male.

if that made any sense xD

That's a good question. I too have a male friend who almost exclusively plays as a female character whenever given the option, and he's never given me a good reason why.

Personally, I'm all about being immersed in my game play. My first play-through in any game with character customization, I try to make my character look as much like me as possible (I thought that was the point of customizable character appearance.) I've tried playing as female characters before, but I've never made it anywhere close to the end of a game before I completely lose interest.

I can't role-play accurately as a woman, because I haven't the slightest idea how women think. The only reason I could think of for why a man might prefer playing as a female avatar is so that instead of watching some dude running/jumping/shooting for hours on end, you could watch an attractive female do it. But if that's the case, then it becomes less of a video-game, and more like an interactive porno.

I think it's because back when Jedi Knight II devoured 300 hours of my youth I preferred Jan's character to kyle's so when the option to pick her model in MP came up I did and have never looked back.

Also the PvP argument...
I always picked C3PO because I was guaranteed to be the only Jedi protocol droid in the game among the 5 million Kyles and Fetts.
