Even though no one is gonna read this

I play as women on games because it's hilarious
In what way hilarious?
Women have been pictured as weak beings among people

Going rambo as a chick backfires so hard against that thought it's funny
Oh right yeah, that is awesome, provided the woman isn't ridiculously over-sexualised like Ivy, in which case it's just annoying.
I rarely see any male protagonist in videogames who isn't brave, strong and intelligent

Not all men are like that

It's more pleasing (heh) but seriously it's just a change of pace. I'm not always a woman, so I just do it sometimes.

I like how threatened people got about their game genders when the OP didn't mention the decision as a stigma XD Kind've makes you wonder if there is an alternative reason than "to see if the story changes". I've considered female characters because I notice in games they have a wider selection of trinkets and shit to wear, and are usually more attractive (and I'm a sucker for playing as someone appealing) but I always play as the man because otherwise it makes me embarrassed.

To see if it changes anything on the second playthrough.

More aesthetically pleasing.

Access to certain classes.

Distance yourself from the character.

better voice acting

I play as girl characters because yes I do like the aesthetics and if I am playing something like Guild Wars where I am staring at my character walking around killing things I don't want to always stare at a man. Odd sexaul connections aside it is nice to mix things up a bit. I like to play 2 completely polar oppiste characters in choice RPGs. One usually good male and one usually evil female. Then if the game is good and still hold appeal I play a grey area male and female. Sometimes I do mix that but that is just how I like playing it. It is also easier to play Fallout 3 as a female character as if you take Black Widow which increases damage vs Males you are at an advantage as there are more male enemies than female in the game.

Yeah but 1 dimensional protagonists like Marcus Fenix annoy me just as much. and it makes sense for characters in a fighting game to know how to fight while it doesn't make much sense for a fighter to have knockers the size of the moon hitting her in the face and wearing a bikini.

I'm sure everything has already been said, but I'll share anyway.

-look better in skin-tight spacesuits than a male
-sometimes I get bored of being a male (new options, clothing)
-interesting role playing scenarios

Ive only played as a chick in a videogame once. And i did it for an achivement. It was in DA Origins. I skipped 90% of the text, romanced New-Carth ERRRR Alistair, and then promptly deleted the save after i got the sweet, sweet point.

I dont know why people do. It creeps me out alittle honestly.

The obvious counter answer: Why not?
Graphical content is graphical content; that's the way I see it.

Roleplaying. (not THAT kind)

Roleplaying a member of the opposite gender realistically. This applies more to tabletop RPGs however rather than console and PC ones.

I often play as a girl in games. Let's look at Dragon Age for example. I'd rather Alistar as a lover...than some stupid girl like that one bard girl. Also the girls are more appealing and the guys are weird and sometimes boring models.

I want to fight the man, man. It's, like, why should we be restricted to what society demands of our already over controlled lives. The system needs to take a chill pill man (and yes, I am being somewhat silly)
The other reason I could think of is transsexuals (why is that spelled with 2 s's?) who don't actually want surgery, but want to be of the other sex in the game world.

Mass effect 2, one reason: Garrus Romance! <3

Oh well I just like making a character that's the opposite of how I am. I also like a sort of duality in my characters. My WoW character was a female human deathknight. I spent some time making sure her face was as appealing as possible in WoW. An innocent looking young girl who then rips your face off and makes your body explode into chunks.

I don't see a reason why you can't or shouldn't play as a character of the opporsite gender. Is there a rulebook that states you should only make characters your sex somewhere?

Because there's something satisfying about running around a nuclear wasteland as a mohawked woman in a leopard skin negligée blowing raiders' brains out with a magnum to the tune of upbeat jazz.
