I chose to play as a female shepard in Mass Effect because I found the male shepard to have an extremely unemotional voice.
Agreed. FemShep's voice actor is actually 10x better than regular Shepard.
hehe, I'm sorry, but you mean male Shepard, no?
Well the default Shepard is the male one. So yeah...

I do it because I after my first play through in most rpg's I create different characters and play through the game with them for example: Disfunctional and psychotic Dalish female elf, or human noble son with loose morals but is ultimately good. I then make the game decisions based on what that character would choose instead of what is my instinctive choice.

Though in all games (except fable for some reason) I prefer to and most often play as a male character

I played a female night elf hunter in WoW because I preferred the animation when firing a bow... don't look at me like that. Holding a bow sideways is just retarded. Like holding a gun sideways, it's not cool, you just look like a twat.

I don't really like playing games where I project onto a character (probs why I don't really like FPS's) I like there to BE a character, so it doesn't bother me to play a lady-folk. In the case of Mass Effect, it was because while male Shepard seemed like the kind of grey brutish protagonist stock-character I hate, female Shepard seemed like a person despite saying and doing pretty much the same things. That's probably both stupid and sexist, but there it is.

I wasn't saying you can't, I was just saying that it ruins the immersion for me because I'm not a girl. I can't understand why you would play in a way that makes the game less fun. Maybe that's just me.
If you play a game as spiderman, does it ruin the immersion for you, because you aren't spiderman? If you play Link, who is left handed, does it ruin the immersion for you because you aren't left handed?

Considering the large number of possible differences between your character and you, I am surprised you ever get immersed.

You would ask 'why' I would do this, but that is about as interesting as asking why I would make the character's hair black, their past shady, or their favorite dessert ice cream.

Name one immersive spider-man game. I can imagine being left-handed, I can relate. I know nothing about what it's like to be a woman, it's more difficult to relate.

Also I hate Legend of Zelda.

They're called role-playing games. You might as well ask me why I like playing the sorts of class/spec combos I do, too, since they're all just stats on the sheet that in turn affect how you interact with the environment. Some of my roles are male, some of them are female, all of them are what I find most entertaining at the time.

Why not? It seems awfully backwards to say that you can only play a game as your own assigned gender.
This.

Also, for some games it gives an entirely different perspective on things.
Take Mass Effect 2...[sub]and maybe 1 too, I haven't actually played it with Ms.Shepherd[/sub]
For some reason, I felt that the story actually worked better with a female character. Don't ask me why, it just...did o.o.

But yeah, why not play as a female?
DIZ IZ SEKZIZM...[sub]i kid, i kid.[/sub].
This.

I play male characters (I'm a guy) because I role play myself in just about every game. This is not to say there is anything wrong with female characters if your a dude but it just feels weird for me.

Why would anyone play as a fruity male paladin, when they can be a bad ass female mage?

I am still amazed the amount of free shit I got as a female character in any MMO, but I still played how I wanted the avatar to be not how I am. I control a character, not a representation of myself.

to all people involved in this post. Actually read the OP. At no point did I say you weren't allowed to play a gender other than your own. I was just asking why people do.

If I'm playing as a female, it's usually in an RPG to fulfill the RP part of things. I like to see female Shepard going through certain scenarios flirting with Garrus, heartbreak from Kaiden, and to see how those scars would look on a chick.

Mostly I play as a man, so that I could better project myself onto the situation, but sometimes a woman can produce a more interesting story. In Kotor 2, the Player Character is supposed to be female, and the implications of being a Bastilla-like renegade is much more interesting than playing as some dude. Though Revan is much more compelling as a man; as I think the concept of redemption and chivalry works better for his amnesia story.

I was just trying to think of a reason why guys so often seem to play women in video games.
My brother plays almost exclusively female characters, and I know he isn't alone. I honestly can't think of single good reason to, for me, all it would do is spoil the immersion as I'm NOT a girl. So, anyone who does play as a woman in games, why? Feel free to speculate even if you don't play a woman, but please try not to just descend into "COz ThEy ARe PerVS LoL!".

TLDR: Why do men play as women?
It's about role playing, I wouldn't want to play a game where I did everything I do normally, it helps to keep things fresh and exciting.

I like to play healers in a game. I'm a dude. My friend, a girl, likes to play dps and guy characters. Only seems natural that I pick the opposite sex.

Im tired of the protagonist being a generic guy all the time. If say Im playing a game like fallout, ill roll a female because a woman would be better to look at when im going to be playing the game for 80 hours.

For me it's because i almost always play a game more than once, so why not see it from a different perspective?

I once knew someone who did this. It was an MMORPG, and his explanation was if he was going to spend hundreds of hours staring at an ass bobbing up and down, it was going to be a hot lady ass.

The point is that it seems like you aren't really asking the right question, or are going about it the wrong way. You can't relate to the opposite sex well, but others can. Some do it for specific reasons (As mentioned here) others simply because they don't have a hard time relating... or better yet like the mystery of it.

I couldn't relate to being an agile assassin. Partially because I don't kill people normally. But partially because I have a disability that makes me very NON agile. And yet I *love* playing agile characters in games because they let me experience things differently.

Why not? Its called Role Playing. If someone wants to be a girl who can kick ass, let them.
