Guys That Play Girls In Games. Why?

Apparently I'm better at immersion, but I'm fine with either gender, except for the females that are all just "SHOW OFF MAI TIOTS!!!!11!".

I break my concentration and just sigh at the developers that made this and wonder how many times they had to "do sock laundry" while in creation of this character.

Several Reasons:

A female avatar is more pleasing to look at. Also it's an interesting character to imagine. A woman kicking ass in a medieval-themed world. I generally find strong women interesting characters so I like to play them. I'm not playing *me* in games. I'm playing a character in that world. So I roll up a female character for the same reason I often play elves. They make more interesting characters in my opinion and look better as an added bonus. :)

I'm not sure why. Occasionally in RPGs I will get bored of always being the big, oafish male character and decide to give the female one a try instead. Often times this changes absolutely nothing or very, very little in the story. Either way, for me, I'd say it's just a matter of being bored with the same kind (gender) of character. Hell, if I could play a game as a gay dude/chick or transgender, I'd probably try that as well. Not that I am gay or transgender in real life but it would be something different, that's for sure.

Other than the reasons already mentioned, the reason I'd think of is the same for reading a book or watching a movie with a female character. To experience things from a new perspective. Sometimes it's not just about immersion, it's about creation of new experiences.

I usually do so on RPGs, mostly because that's the point of RPGs to put yourself in the shoes of different characters and in situations you wouldn't get into on normal life.

My favorite DA:O character was a female, mostly because I never worked so hard on a character before her (I wanted her to be queen :p) and because you can't become king on that game, not to mention Alistair was my favorite character.

Everyone has different parts of their personality, and playing as a female in an MMO can be a way of putting on a different hat, so to speak. For someone who wants to see what it's like on the "other side", making an avatar of the opposite gender is an easier & safer way of experimentation than putting on makeup and hoping you don't run into violent homophobes at the mall. This isn't any sort of sexual experimentation, either; just finding out how your non-native gender is treated in the world.

Also alien lesbian sex scene, but hey, that's old news. Old, sexy news.

I usually don't. However, it's impossible not to in some of my favourite games (Iji and the Touhou series). In these cases, I'm okay with it - the characters are rather interesting anyway. And, in the latter case, completely insane for the most part.

I myself don't do it, I just can't bring myself to it, to put myself in the character I need the character to resemble me, or at least be male, maybe I should try being a girl.

If immersion if projecting yourself upon your character, then that's pretty sad.
I sense a bit of hypocricy here. It's alright for you to play as the opposite gender, but it's totally weird if someone wants to imagine themselves as a character!

Agreed. FemShep's voice actor is actually 10x better than regular Shepard.

My mages and lockpicks are male. My assassins and fighters are female.

I blame Tamora Pierce's "Song of the Lioness" series, which I read very very young and still love to this day for fixing the image of the female swordswoman into my brain.

Also, when roleplaying in Pen&Paper or online, my female characters usually end up being tough, utter bitches (or either very tough or extremely evil and manipulative), while my male characters usually try to sexually assault everything in a skirt (yes, that's including scotsmen) with oozing charm.

It just makes sense in my head!

Because I'd like to have something nice to look at as i kill zombies left and right, and spending the entire game staring at a girl's ass seems a lot more pleasant than spending it staring at a guy's.

Because there's the freedom to, and imagining a character that's not a sack of meat with an attached power/gun/giant sword is fun, and keeps the whole experience intact? Because interactions between men and men, women and men, and women and women are all different, and therefore can all be different experiences, leading to a comprehensive understanding and fulfillment of the game world offered, allowing different minds to be played in, further expanding on your own experience as a person, allowing you to see through the eyes of multiple other people, experiencing their perspectives?

Or, you know, "Cuz dey be hotz".

To me it just seems most male characters in action games and the like are unreasonably muscular, I guess I subconsciously equate that with a lack of intelligence or elegance, not really sure entirely. For me video games are less about going through worlds as myself, and more about escaping reality

As a male, I'll start the game as a male character, but when I play it again (harder difficulty of course) I'll play as a female character to see the differences.
Also, let's be honest. Female characters tend to become more badass then the male characters.
