As is every dude who's ever played a shooter.

...Either that r a lot of people fail to understand what immersion is.

If I have any ability to edit a character in game I'll always make it male and spend the next "X" amount of time trying to make it look as much like me as possible, mostly for immersion (I've spent hours on some rare occasions :s plus many re-tries)
And also because I've always wanted to see my exact likeness in a video game

I wasn't saying you can't, I was just saying that it ruins the immersion for me because I'm not a girl. I can't understand why you would play in a way that makes the game less fun. Maybe that's just me.
If you play a game as spiderman, does it ruin the immersion for you, because you aren't spiderman? If you play Link, who is left handed, does it ruin the immersion for you because you aren't left handed?

Considering the large number of possible differences between your character and you, I am surprised you ever get immersed.

You would ask 'why' I would do this, but that is about as interesting as asking why I would make the character's hair black, their past shady, or their favorite dessert ice cream.
Name one immersive spider-man game. I can imagine being left-handed, I can relate. I know nothing about what it's like to be a woman, it's more difficult to relate.

Also I hate Legend of Zelda.
The point is that it seems like you aren't really asking the right question, or are going about it the wrong way. You can't relate to the opposite sex well, but others can. Some do it for specific reasons (As mentioned here) others simply because they don't have a hard time relating... or better yet like the mystery of it.

I couldn't relate to being an agile assassin. Partially because I don't kill people normally. But partially because I have a disability that makes me very NON agile. And yet I *love* playing agile characters in games because they let me experience things differently.
I'm not asking for a reason why I should play as a woman, I know there isn't one, or I would already be playing as women (except when they have bonus content) I'm asking why other people do.

If I'm not going for a Touhou tie-in, it's usually more aesthetically pleasing. That, and in the original Monster Hunter games the female armor just looked better.

As harsh as it sounds it is because I think gamers are living out some kind of perverse fantasy by playing as a woman.

I am with the OP, I always play as a male as I am one. Most of the time I can see the valid other side of the argument, but I have seen a lot of Oblivion clips where people have modded it and are running around as naked elves and you can immediately tell it is some lonely 25+ obese male playing. That only applies to the specific case of Oblivion, as for other games I don't know.

Here's my reply, why not? But then again I almost exclusively play women cause I suppose for so long you were forced to play a man character (That right I'm looking at you Pokemon) LMAO

But for reason as the different plot twist ie relationships I have male chars for KotoR1,2 and ME 1 and 2 also Jade Empire haven't gotten around to making male chars for FO, Obliv, or Fable

Well how about the just: Because we can.
Like a few people before me already said. Some things do not have big reason behind it or multi-layered veils of perversities sometime people just do things because they can. Playing a female character is just one of those things.

But just because you can do something doesn't mean you do. I can jump up and down. What is different between playing as a male and playing as a female that makes you play as a female? Even if it is as simple as "to mix things up a bit" there is still a reason.

I tend to play male characters if I want to do the stereotypical warrior or rouge class; the runny, jumpy, stabby, stealy of gaming I grew up with. Usually, though, I play female magic users or custom classes; a combination of magic/stealth or magic/combat.

On a side note, I did a little "gender test" a while back. I played the first few hours of Mass Effect as a male and a female, making the same choices, specializing in the same things and helping the same people. I then told some gamer buddies of my adventures as a male and female and I was amazed at how many would tell me my female character was being "bold, strong and independent" while in the same breath say the male character was being "weak, naive and gay".

Double standard, anyone?

One thing I've noticed is that female characters tend to be smaller and thus have a small hit-box in games that feature such a mechanic. It's easier to play a girl because of this.

If im staring at some ones ass for a long time might as well be a females
Or you could, you know, look at what's going on in the game and not stare at your character's ass.

One of my friends put it this way: "If you have to look at your character's ass for 25 hours, it might as well be aesthetically pleasing."

That is REALLY a negligible difference. I'm sure they will receive the same amount of damage.

Just because you feel there has to be a reason for it doesn't mean everyone that does it have a reason behind it.

You asked why. So i replied with because the possibility is there. That is a reason but you somehow refuse to see that reason. Sometimes things are that simple.

I beg to differ. It's a small amount of damage, no doubt, but it's still noticeable.
