You play Fallout 3 in 3rd person?

...you're weird :D

Well that's the funny thing, I do play in first person. The reason I care is that I feel like everyone in the game will judge me as being ugly which obviously they cannot do.

I'm confused about all these replies saying "If you're gonna stare at the back of someone for an entire game, might as well be some hot girls ass". Who the hell stares at the back of their character?
all the people that just stated what you are countering stare at the back of their character, and kind of closed minded to think "NO ONE REALLY DOES IT".

What the argument doesn't solve is why guys play girls in first person games. Not that it really matters because you'll never see yourself, but I always find it rather odd playing with my friends when they're playing girl characters with huge boobs and tight asses. Am I supposed to be playing the game or wanking?
It was never stated which kind of game we are supposed to play, it just stated why we played as females, most of the time, we do it for the statement already posted which you furiously shot down, in first person games is the same idea or concept forget about "look" and think more in the line of "heck i want to be a girl because i´m tired of males" this is true for me, i wouldnt know about all the other guys.

I still like playing games like Portal or Mirror's Edge. Even though you know you're a girl, it doesn't really affect anything (especially in Portal, since GlaDOS doesn't try to have a girly talk with you, thank god). Past that there is the huffing puffing noises of Faith in Mirror's Edge, but that's on the same level as listening to a guy shout "HUP!" every time you jump.
well... you are obviously overly critical of one´s avatar, you dont mind when they dont have "girl talk" but what if they did?? a game is an experience to do something you dont normally do, if you are thinking "this people might have homosexual tendencies" because we enjoy getting out of rol, then i can assure you you are wrong and if you notice the "huffs" and "puffs" are from a female voice you are over thinking it

i know you never stated anything about homosexuality or nothing particularly points to you thinking that, but after reading your post thats what i sensed you feel, forget it if i´m wrong, but understand that most of us actually dont care gender, and as such we choose whatever we want to be for the duration of the game, female-male-mage-fighter it all comes down on what one wants to interpret while playing.

but you ARE over thinking it if you notice when your character makes a female noise.

It's been said before...variety.

Not just in the fact that the story may change while playing a female protagonist as opposed to a male one, but also in the fact sometimes gamePLAY may differ as well. Consider Fable III, where the various clothing/makeup/tattoo/facial hair equips can have different effects on your character's appearance in regards to others depending on your gender. Or even Dragon Quest IX, which features various equips for male only and female only, so choosing which equips are best for your character will be varied depending on what gender you are.

Personally, I feel from a role-playing aspect, playing as the opposite gender gives you a chance to REALLY role-play. You're stepping into a role that is definitely nothing like you and this gives you a chance to see if you are capable of pulling it off.

Try this: For those who still play D&D here, next time you are starting a new adventure and are creating a new character for said adventure, try creating a character that's the opposite gender as yourself. I think you might actually have fun trying to play this role.

Not really an issue with it. I usually play half and half most of the time, mainly just because I can and because I'm a completion whore and like to see if it's any different or if dialogue on different pending on gender. Also in some games the male character model might look weird or in some games the devs go nutts and make them so huge that it looks silly, like Soul Calibur 4 and the men's tree trunk thighs of doom, while the female character models look less disturbing. Plus it's a game and you take the role of someone else, and what's the furthest thing from yourself if your a guy? Answer is a girl (or horrendous monster/alien thing)

I was just trying to think of a reason why guys so often seem to play women in video games.
My brother plays almost exclusively female characters, and I know he isn't alone. I honestly can't think of single good reason to, for me, all it would do is spoil the immersion as I'm NOT a girl. So, anyone who does play as a woman in games, why? Feel free to speculate even if you don't play a woman, but please try not to just descend into "COz ThEy ARe PerVS LoL!".

TLDR: Why do men play as women?

EDIT: Women who play as men also feel free to reply as to why you do.

This is not about sexism, I am NOT saying you can't play as a woman, I just want to know why you do.
Honestly, the only 2 times I've played the female character first is because it seemed to fit the plot better. These two cases were Fable 2 and 3. In both situations, your main character was brought up from being a weak and homeless orphan (Fable 2) or a pampered pansy (Fable 3), and to see either stereo type of a woman fall away as my character becomes a strong and confidant hero is strangely empowering to me.

Also you're going to be looking at primarily your character for hours on en, might as well put something beautiful there.

On a side note, I generally avoid female characters who have deep romantic relationship with other important characters (a la Mass Effect) it feels weird being romantically upon other guys. While in the real world I'm usually flattered if I'm hit upon by a gay guy (hey if I'm attractive enough for other guys, imagine what the girls must think), but being a female character in a game seems oddly like lying to them, and as I hate being a nasty person, I'm left in a vicious catch 22 between my morality and my sexuality. Hence I tend to avoid such games.

Things you're not:

- A space marine
- A scientist
- Batman
- An assassin
- A prisoner with a mysterious past whose crimes are not the things he will be remembered for
- James Bond
- A cowboy
- An eastern European gangster
- A *insert Star Wars alien species here* Jedi
- A writer
- A general
- A prince of Persia
- (Not quite) Antonio Banderas at his finest
- A car
- A spaceship captain
- An orc, an elf, a dark elf, and all that jazz
- Beowulf
- Hello Kitty
- That guy on Lost who never showed up on TV but was so important they made a game about him
- A superhero
- A film director
- Captain of the Enterprise

None of these things ruin the immersion for you if you are set as them or choose to play as them, yet being a woman does?

Maybe they just like to stare at a fake woman's arse and not a fake man's one.
Speak for yourself. >_>

I'd play in 3rd person, if I played it at all because I hate first person view. I haven't enjoyed a first person game since the original Golden Eye.

OT: Aside from the "If I'm going to stare at something for 8+ hours it may as well be something good." My reason is that' generally speaking, when you can make your own character, the female options almost always look so much better (in World of Warcraft especially.) As if more work was put into them to look appealing. It's like the whole reason women wear make up, to look/feel more attractive. That's basically how I feel developers do when making female characters in general or when giving you the option for character creation.

Maybe it's not less fun.
Maybe there's some satisfaction in pulling off (even though in an RPG, nobody's going to say "you sound like a man") the role of a character of the opposite sex.
Maybe I'm starting to sound freudian.
F**ked if I know, I geneally play female characters on my second go through of an RPG just to see how it changes the game. Arguably, not much.

It's very very simple. It's about asthetics. I tend to play mostly female characters becuase I'd rather look at a female face/arse than a blokes.

This has been done oh so many times before.

Well what about Mirrors Edge.. thats a "good" games but the main character is played by a female? with no character customization to it. and also some MMO's have sex orientated classes, so for example u want to be a ranger u have to play female SUN and Dekaron are prim example of this. But back to the question at hand i sometimes play female just to see if there is any difference to the way the game is played. Like im playing Fable 3 on my female as well as the male just to see the difference with I.E clothing, the way they move and soo on.

all im saying is why not if u have the chance??

Very rarely see women play as men when they have the choice though...
Maybe it's do to the fact so many games force you to be a guy (less often a lady) so they've had plenty of chances to play as men already while an offer to appear more like themselves or at least of the same gender leads them to pick as such.
I do know that the few ladies I know that have played men are quite shocked by the rough camaraderie that we have. How come you're so shit at this?
Wait what? I was giving a possible reason why a woman would choice not to be a guy not the end all answer for it what's with the response?

You're not a gun-toting sword-wielding demon-slaying world-saver either, but it'd be pretty dull if you spent the entirety of fallout 3 sat at home messing around with a computer. I've spent all my life being myself, games are chance to immerse myself in a character other than myself, who may or may not share some characteristics with myself.
i see your point but i think the immersion thing is....well the character looks like me...so it is me..so WHAT IF...i was a demon slaying 6ft 7inch monster of a man...that looks like me...

My guess is that guys like to look at girls ass instead of guys ass so they make a female character. Boobs play a big role too. Especially in games like Saints Row 2. I usually play as a guy though. I like to imagine that I'm the character and female character would just break that illusion.

I typically play as female for my main, usually 'generic' first playthrough of a game. Then, I'll go back and play through as some of my male characters, purely because they have more interesting personalities.

When I play female I'm too tempted to turn her into myself, so I find it easier to immerse myself in the story of a character when they're the opposite gender. That's not to say I don't keep alternate girls going, I just do it less often.

Plus, y'know, eyecandy.

Maybe after I get my Author Self Insertion character, a dude, I decide I might like to look at a female ass for a while. It isn't exactly enlightened but I enjoy the view. Also, my wife sucks at video games but likes making characters so I play chics for her and then ask what decision she wants to make.

I've done that for our girlfriend too.

Switched fonts, sorry, I thought you'd click on the idea that it was in a different voice.

Male-Male camaraderie tends to be based on sweeping insults to best friends, but if there's a woman there, it often gets toned right down. If there's a woman pretending to man, the sharpness of the language - like there - can catch someone out.

That wasn't meant as an insult towards you, just as an example of how guys online can talk to someone in a friendly way, despite it being offensive.
